Review: Until Next Time by Amy Lignor

Until Next Time: The Angel Chronicles, Book 1
Author: Amy Lignor

Summary: How does a girl choose between the one who steals her heart and the one who owns her soul?

Matt and Emily were created for a specific job. Raised and trained as the ultimate angel/warrior team, they are sent down to save, defend, judge and forgive, depending on the 'life' they've been assigned. What they don't realize is that the power of human emotions, such as love, anger, passion and fear can take over even the best of souls, causing them to make mistakes and follow paths that lead to confusion and heartache.

When the reason for their training is finally revealed, the angel/warrior team find themselves thrust into a world they know nothing about. Matt takes over the life of Daniel, a young man with a great deal of baggage. Emily becomes Liz, a girl living in a remote village who relies on nothing more than her own strength to survive. A violent storm erupts one night, and framed in the window of Liz's establishment is a frightening face. Let in by the soul of a Good Samaritan, the two visitors bring with them a past full of secrets that could literally change an angel's path and a warrior's plans.

From murder to redemption, this angel/warrior team must find a way to keep the faith they have in each other in a world that's ripping them apart.
Review: I was really excited to be asked to join in this blog tour! I have heard about this book around the blogging community for awhile now and thought it sounded interesting. Plus - the cover is awesome!
This book is among many in the YA genre that is tackling the paranormal beings of angels. This had a different feel to it - instead of fallen angels or angels trying to get back into good graces, this deals with a team of angels who are sent on their first trip (mission) to Earth. I thought the concept of angels and the kind of reincarnation ideas mixed in was pretty unique and worked well for the story. Some of the characters seemed flat - I felt there wasn't enough backstory to them, even though they were not the main characters. Faith, for example, had a mysterious past that I was very curious about, but didn't get any explanations. The writing style was really good and the story itself flowed great. It was a fun and easy read. There did seem to be a lot of foreshadowing going on, probably for the upcoming books in the series, but it confused me a bit and distracted me from the plot of this book. The ending also became a bit religious in tone, which didn't bother me because it fit with the theme of angels and Heaven. Overall, this was a great read featuring angels and I really enjoyed it!

Six months ago, her world collapsed and since then, she’s failed to find a reason to keep going. Now seems like the perfect time to give up. As Sloane eagerly waits for the barricades to fall, she’s forced to witness the apocalypse through the eyes of five people who actually want to live. But as the days crawl by, the motivations for survival change in startling ways and soon the group’s fate is determined less and less by what’s happening outside and more and more by the unpredictable and violent bids for life—and death—inside. Review: Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers

Grave Mercy
Author: Robin LaFevers
Genre:YA/Historical
Release Date: April 3, 2012
Review Source: Houghton Mifflin Books for Children via NetGalley
Format: Ebook

Description:
Why be the sheep, when you can be the wolf?

Seventeen-year-old Ismae escapes from the brutality of an arranged marriage into the sanctuary of the convent of St. Mortain, where the sisters still serve the gods of old. Here she learns that the god of Death Himself has blessed her with dangerous gifts—and a violent destiny. If she chooses to stay at the convent, she will be trained as an assassin and serve as a handmaiden to Death. To claim her new life, she must destroy the lives of others.

Ismae’s most important assignment takes her straight into the high court of Brittany—where she finds herself woefully under prepared—not only for the deadly games of intrigue and treason, but for the impossible choices she must make. For how can she deliver Death’s vengeance upon a target who, against her will, has stolen her heart?

Review: I am not usually a big fan of historical fiction and I don't read much of it. That being said, I want to start this review by saying how much I LOVED this book. It is one of the best books I have read to date and is now one of my favorites. It's quite long at over 550 pages, but I sailed through it in under 2 days. I literally could not stop reading it. The story was great - it felt realistic to the historical setting. The characters were heartfelt and easy to identify with - especially the story's heroine Ismae. I know a book is written well when I feel visceral reactions (think butterflies in the stomach, crying over a scene, etc.). This doesn't happen to me often, but this book had me all over the place. I was laughing out loud, crying with Ismae in sympathy, having butterflies in my stomach - the whole deal. The story is beautifully and wonderfully written. I can say nothing bad about it at all. There was nothing that had me criticizing the characters or the writing - everything fit perfectly. Needless to say, I will be buying a pretty finished copy of this book so I can read it again and I'm already eagerly awaiting the next installment of the series. In short - YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK. Even if you are not a fan of historical fiction - you will be happy you gave it a shot.

Review: So Close the Hand of Death by J.T. Ellison

So Close the Hand of Death
Author: J.T. Ellison
Genre: Crime/Thriller/Suspense
Release Date: February 15, 2011
Review Source: Mira Publishing
Format: Paperback

Description: It's a hideous echo of a violent past. Across America, murders are being committed with all the twisted hallmarks of the Boston Strangler, the Zodiac Killer and Son of Sam. The media frenzy explodes and Nashville homicide lieutenant Taylor Jackson knows instantly that The Pretender is back…and he's got helpers.
As The Pretender's disciples perpetrate their sick homages—stretching police and the FBI dangerously thin—Taylor tries desperately to prepare for their inevitable showdown. And she must do it alone. To be close to her is to be in mortal danger, and she won't risk losing anyone she loves. But the isolation, the self-doubt and the rising body count are taking their toll—she's beside herself and ready to snap.
The brilliant psychopath who both adores and despises her is drawing close. Close enough to touch….

Review: So Close the Hand of Death is another superb crime thriller by best-selling author J.T. Ellison. Fans of her earlier novels will not be disappointed with the trouble that heroine Taylor Jackson finds herself in once again. The book is full of surprising plot twists and solid writing. The psychological cat and mouse game that goes on in the novel sets you at the edge of your seat and has you trying to guess what is going to happen until the very end. Ellison's characters are very rounded and built upon a strong background from her previous novels - which helps the reader to understand and sympathize with them all the better. So Close the Hand of Death is a wonderfully written, taut crime thriller that will make readers eager for the next adventures of Lt. Taylor Jackson.

Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Showers of Books Giveaway Hop & Author Interview!

Showers of Books Giveaway Hop
April 20 - 25

Welcome to my stop on the Showers of Books Giveaway Hop! There are over 175 blogs participating in this hop - so make sure you visit them and enter to win their giveaways! A linky list of all the blogs participating is at the bottom of my post.

Author M. Clifford was kind enough to agree to an interview for the blog. Read what his answers are to my questions & then keep reading to see the awesome giveaway!

Is anything in your books based on real life experiences or purely all imagination?
I'd say that an author can't write a book without inserting a piece of himself or herself, be it through their personal walk through life or by observing and interpreting someone else's life experience.  All of my books are me, if that makes sense.  Even if the details are minute, I can't help but make every book about me, in some way, shape, form, etc.  That said, my stories (thus far) are derived from my imagination.

When did you first start writing and when did you finish your first book?
I first started writing when I was young - maybe eight or nine.  I was a very creative kid because my neighborhood growing up was hiding in a forest preserve and I was one of only a few people under the age of thirty-five.  I spent a lot of time alone in the forest, keeping myself occupied with my imagination - and was never bored.  I finished my first story around age eighteen somewhere between '97 and '98.  Haven't stopped writing since.

Where do you get your ideas?
"Getting ideas" is a skill, and not one that is ever really discussed.  I think all kids have it.  It's not something you're born with, but rather something that dies as you get older.  IMHO.  Welcome to the finite "real world" where imaginary friends don't exist.  As you age, you're forced to "grow up" and leave a part of yourself behind.  I believe that ideas come to me so quickly (and I now have more ideas than I can produce books for in a lifetime) because I never got rid of that part of myself.  I am influenced by everything because I never turned off that child-like characteristic of constantly interpreting the world around me.

How long does it take you to write a book?
If it's something I'm really passionate about, like my novel THE BOOK, I can write it in a matter of two months.  With the FELINIAN series, each book has taken me four to six months, sometimes longer based on my editor's notes.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?
That being a novelist is a heart-wrenching career.  You love your characters so much.  They feel like a part of you.  I never would have imagined myself crying because a character died or got their heart broken - - but when it happens, and the words flow onto the page from your fingers, you realize how much it guts you.  I don't think there are many careers in the world where you are forced to be so liberal with your heart.

How do you come up with the titles?
Titles are never a problem.  It's like seeing an old friend from across the room at a party and recalling their name.  It's sort of instinctual.  Other authors probably hate me for saying that, but it's true for me.  Sometimes it's as fast as the idea for the story.  "Oh, and it's called THE MUSE OF EDOUARD MANET."  Done.

What books/authors have influenced your life most?
What boy learning how to read in the 80s wasn't influenced by Stephen King...?  I know he can be crass and graphic, but King has always been an inspiration because of how naturally he can showcase an idea and how real the characters feel.  My tastes have changed over the years, but I still read King when he comes out with a new book.

What book are you reading now?
A suggestion from my wife.  My first *real* paranormal romance.  Not too bad, actually.

What do you like to do when you're not writing?
I like to play tennis, read, go down to the beach, bike the coastline, see movies with my wife, and play Call of Duty - - yes, yes, I know.  It's my secret sin.

If you couldn't be an author, what would your ideal career be?
A interior architect at Gensler who designs his own furniture on the weekends.  Specific enough?  It's what my degree is in, before I decided to exchange corporate creativity for writing novels.

Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?
Yes, and it's not what they want to hear.  Just do it for fun.  If a story gets finished, great.  If people want to buy it in book form, cool.  Maybe there is a future in it for you.  But don't do it if you want to be the next <insert favorite author here> .  It does not happen overnight and the publishing business is not what it used to be.  The future of publishing will be a grueling lifestyle for you and your loved ones, as you juggle much more than pulling inked pages from an antique typewriter.  Don't look to be a career novelist if you aren't willing to split your awesome self into three unequal parts - 85% businessman, 15% genius writer, and 30% insane person.  Yes, it's possible that you are the next great American author, just as it is possible that you're the next American Idol. Things could take off for you once your voice is heard, but it's unlikely.  My advice is that if you enjoy novels and want to create your own stories, keep writing until it isn't fun anymore.  Don't sacrifice things that should be more important.  And try to find a way to love what you do, even if it isn't writing.

Be sure to check out M.'s website for more details on his books! www.m-clifford.com

Now for the giveaway! My giveaway for this hop is being graciously donated by author M. Clifford. We are offering (1) one paperback copy of Felinian, (1) ebook copy of Felinian, and (1) ebook copy of Fertile Crescent (Book of the Felinian #2). **Please note that Fertile Crescent does not come out until next month, so the winner will have to wait until the release day to receive their copy.** SO - that is (3) three prizes for (3) three different winners!!

Here is a brief description of Felinian (from Goodreads): Katherine Luna lives in Sleepy Hollow. And she is upset with her life. She is being forced to go to a different high school than all her friends, the creepy cat lady who lives in her neighborhood is getting stranger each day and she has just been humiliated at a senior party on Halloween in the worst way possible for a teenage girl. As her body suddenly begins to change in the most unexpected way, forcing all the boys to fawn over her, she is confronted with the realization that she can communicate with cats and that a mysterious man is now following her. All starts to make sense when she learns that she has become a Felinian and that she has been quickly gifted with the fabled nine-lives of a cat, tied somehow with ancient Egyptian lore, and empowered with the ability to control the passions and minds of men. As Katherine fights her lustful, Felinian nature, attempting to stop herself from stalking the boys of her school, the man stalking her begins to reveal his purpose. With the help of her neighborhood friend Hector, a boy that seems more connected to this haunted world than he lets on, Katherine tries to manage her new life and struggles to strike a balance between monster and girl, all the while hoping and wondering, will she ever be a regular girl again?

Author: Maggie Stiefvater
Title: The Raven Boys
Series: N/A
Publisher: Scholastic Press
Genre: Paranormal/YA
Release Date: September 18, 2012

Amazon Description: “There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark’s Eve,” Neeve said. “Either you’re his true love . . . or you killed him.”

It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive.

Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them—not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her.

His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble.

But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He has it all—family money, good looks, devoted friends—but he’s looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little.

For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.
