Waiting On Wednesday

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly Meme hosted by Jill @ Breaking the Spine. Book bloggers present upcoming books they can’t wait to read and share their enthusiasm about new releases.

Title: Dearly, Beloved (Gone With the Respiration #2)
Author: Lia Habel

Genre: YA/Dystopian/Zombies
Publisher: Del Rey Books
Release Date: September 25, 2012

First 70 Words from Dearly, Beloved:

When I got to the top of the hill, the zombie caught me. I dropped my parasol and leather-bound digital diary in shock. He pulled me to his body from behind, imprisoned my tiny hands in his so I couldn’t fight back, and parted his cold lips at the nape of my neck.
I squealed with delight, even as I drummed my boot heel on his shin. “Bram, let go!”

AND a Teaser Paragraph from Lia Habel:

Then he insulted her and her father. In a funny way, that offered me some reassurance. I’d heard the words, and they occasioned a wave of nearly debilitating anger, but I hadn’t ripped his tongue out. Progress. I’d become a regular New Victorian gentleman.

 Excerpt:
From Chapter 2 - The Missing Guest (Mariella's POV)

"I can't believe she stuck her nose in my business!" My psycho stepmom was already trying to ruin my summer.
"Stepmoms suck, Elle. That's a fact." Carmen couldn't quite contain her laughter.
"Easy for you to say. Your mom doesn't force you to go to boring business parties."
"Just ignore her. Cynthia could care less."
"She'll learn not to cross me . . . eventually," I replied. Carmen grabbed the remote from my nightstand.
"So what do you have planned for tomorrow?" I looked up.
"Ugh! Don't remind me! I'm trying to forget about William's lame dinner party." Technically, William was my father but you'd never guess it. We were completely different in every way possible. And yeah, his friends from work were incredibly dull. "I'm gonna try to get out of it."
"How?" Carmen switched on the television and found a comfy spot on my bed.
"Stomach ache, flu, I'll think of something . . ."
"You should threaten to dump laxatives in everyone's drinks," Carmen suggested. "Remember when you did that to Marcy Jenkins in the eighth grade?"
"Too much work," I replied. "I'd have to sneak into the kitchen and distract the cooks . . . Besides, you wouldn't want me to miss our concert next weekend would you?"
"Fine." Carmen was rapidly flipping through channels.
A sudden banging on the door made both of us jump. My bedroom door swung open revealing Cynthia, the psycho stepmom. Her cheeks were a fiery red. I bit my lip to prevent myself from laughing. I'd noticed our housekeeper, Rosa, doing a load of Cynthia's whites. I may have thrown in a bright blue sweater.
"What's wrong with you, Mariella?" Cynthia scowled. "Are you aware that you completely ruined my new cream blouse? I don't know how Rosa is going to get it back to a
perfect shade of white? Mariella! Are you even listening?" I shrugged and bit my lip so hard that I pulled off a piece of dry skin. "Your father is sure to hear about this, young lady!"
"What makes you think it was me?" I asked. "I've been with Carmen all day." Carmen waved her hand for a brief second.
"We both know who did it. Your behavior these past couple weeks has been completely inappropriate!" Cynthia put a hand on her stomach and glared at me.
"Completely," I sarcastically agreed. "Maybe you should leave?" Cynthia shook her head.
"If this continues, I won't be the one leaving."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"I don't need the extra stress right now," she complained. "I trust you haven't forgotten about tomorrow? Iris will be up in a minute with your dress."
"About that," I began. "I don't think I'll be able to make it. How about you tell everyone I have the flu or something." I looked down at the floor and waited for Cynthia to have a meltdown.
"Oh no you don't! Your father made it clear that you are to attend tomorrow." Cynthia smirked before turning to slam my bedroom door. "And that is exactly what you'll do!"
"Yikes," Carmen commented as Cynthia stormed out. "She hates your guts. I'm surprised she didn't have you locked in the wine cellar or something. What do you want to bet she bought you the ugliest dress money can buy?"
"Yeah, she probably did and I don't plan on wearing it. You know I hate dresses. What do think of jeans and a t-shirt?" Carmen smiled as she twirled a piece of her short black hair.
"That would really piss her off."
"I know," I smirked. Another knock at the door made Carmen sit up straight. She was anxious to witness another Cynthia attack. "It's just Iris."
"Afternoon, girls," Iris said as she entered my room with a plastic garment bag. Being my dad's assistant meant Iris had to put up with Cynthia's nagging. I could tell Iris detested my stepmom just as much as I did. The difference was she had to be polite if she wanted to keep her job. Iris put the plastic bag on my bed and nodded at Carmen.
"Well, what did she choose this time?" Iris smiled and unzipped the garment bag. There was a small shimmer of something glittery and I knew right away that I would hate whatever Iris pulled out.
"Your brilliant stepmother requests that you try it on." I stared at Iris as she lifted my dress out of the bag.
"Yeah right," I muttered as I glared at the pink sequins. "So not wearing that."
"You haven't even tried it on," Carmen giggled "Give it a chance."
"Shut up." I held the dress against my shoulders and turned around to look in the mirror. I looked ridiculous, and even Iris let out a sympathetic giggle. The pink sequins and poofy skirt made me look like some kind of deranged ballerina.
"It's not that bad," Iris tried to sound reassuring. I rolled my eyes.
"Yeah," Carmen continued. "After all, the pink matches the color streak in your hair." I threw the dress to the floor and shook my head. The pink streak in my hair was the only amount of pink I could handle.
"There's no way I'm putting that thing on," I argued. Cynthia was crazy if she thought I'd actually wear something she picked out.
"You can't wear jeans, Mariella. This is a formal party." Iris looked worried – it was her responsibility to make sure I behaved.
"How about these?" I held up some fishnet stockings that went along with last year's Halloween costume. Iris was speechless.
"Ummm . . ."
"I'm only kidding!" I threw the fishnet stockings on the floor. The majority of my closet consisted of ripped jeans and small t-shirts.
"Why don't you wear that?" Iris pointed to the cream colored dress I hadn't noticed before.
"This?" I pulled the dress out and held it against my torso. "Where did this come from?" Iris smiled. I walked towards the mirror in my room and glanced at my reflection.
"Well, it's better than the pink one," Carmen said.
"Fine, I'll wear this one. Is that low key enough for you, Iris?"
"It's perfect." Iris put the sparkly pink dress back in its garment bag.
"Thanks," I said quietly.
"I'm sorry?" Iris was about to rush out of the room but she paused, confused.
"I said thanks," I repeated. Iris nodded before shutting my door.
"Looks like you're going then?" Carmen giggled as she stared at the TV. I stuck my tongue out and found a seat next to her on the bed. The only thing I could hope for now was the opportunity to pull some sort of subtle prank. It was much more fun to improvise. William's dinner parties always felt like they lasted for years. And I always left them feeling like I'd wasted a night of my life.
"I wish you could come with, Carmen. It wouldn't be so bad if I had someone to make fun of Cynthia with."
"You'll be fine Elle. You always are." Carmen was right, but sitting through party after party was starting to get old. I didn't want to start my summer that way.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

Just like Awakened, Betrayed has risen above all the other books in this genre. She has created such an amazing world for her Guardians & demons where good and evil are not as simple as it seems they should be. ~J. Whitus (Book Junkies) Walking On Bookshelves

I just love a spunky heroine so I was excited to keep reading about Lil, the demon hunter I got to know in Awakened (book one of The Guardian Legacy series). Walters takes the story and world she built so well in Awakened and adds in an intense plot with lots of twists to make for a strong sequel.~ Kelli (I'd So Rather Be Reading)

Lil is one of my favorite female leads, with all of the traits that you want a strong female lead to have. She's smart, strong, loyal and doesn't know how to back down.~ Missy (Missy's Reads & Reviews)

Lil has her work cut out for her in this book and she never failed me once!
There is action in this book as well as a lot of emotional turmoil.~ Cathy Garcia  http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/223502567

EDNAH WALTERS BIO:

I grew up reading Nancy Drew and Hardy boys mysteries and fell in love with books

I enjoy good love stories, tingly mysteries and epic adventures. When I finished my college and decided to be a stay-at-home mother, I devoured books like they were going out of production, until reading just wasn't enough. So I started to write.

I've written picture books (unpublished), contemporary and romantic suspense (under the pen name E. B. Walters), and finally YA fantasy (as Ednah Walters).

AWAKENED (2010) is the prequel to the YA series about the Nephilim, The Guardian Legacy series. BETRAYED(book # 1) is now available wherever books are sold, HUNTED (book # 2) will be released in February 2013 andFORGOTTEN (later in 2013).

My adult contemporary with or without suspense is about a west coast Irish-American family series. I've published four Fitzgerald books: SLOW BURN (April 5th 2011), MINE UNTIL DAWN (June 29th 2011), KISS ME CRAZY (Sept 25th 2011) and DANGEROUS LOVE (Jan 29th 2012)

When I'm not writing, I do things with my family, five children and my darling husband of 18 years. I live in a picturesque valley in northern Utah, the setting for my YA series.

Waterspell by Deborah J. Lightfoot: Excerpt & Giveaway!

The Warlock: Waterspell Book 1
Author: Deborah J. Lightfoot
Genre: YA/Fantasy
Release Date: November 2011

Purchase:                        Amazon                           Barnes & Noble

Synopsis:

Drawn into the schemes of an angry wizard, Carin glimpses the place she once called home. It lies upon a shore that seems unreachable. To learn where she belongs and how to get there, the teenage traveler must decipher the words of an alien book, follow the clues in a bewitched poem, conjure a dragon from a pool of magic -- and tread carefully around a seductive but volatile, emotionally scarred sorcerer who can't seem to decide whether to love her or kill her.

Excerpt:

From: Chapter 1. The Swordsman

It happened too fast to hurt at first. But, oh! the blood—lots of it, streaming from a gouge that crosscut her knee.
She hunched over the wound, her masses of unkempt hair tumbling around her face, strands of it trailing in the gore. Blindly Carin fumbled in her belt-pouch for something to stanch the bleeding. Her fingers met only flint and steel for fire-making, pebbles for arming her sling, and a length of twine that was useful for everything from tying back her shaggy auburn mane to rigging a brush shelter.
Abruptly a hand grasped the shank of her leg, and another shoved at her shoulder. “Straighten up,” her captor snarled.
Carin threw back her head and flung the hair out of her eyes. “You!” she gasped. “But—” She hadn’t heard the swordsman’s approaching footsteps—a seeming impossibility through the crunchy carpet of autumn leaves. Yet here the man was, crouched beside her and brandishing a dagger. Carin’s hand flew to shield her throat, but it was her knee he put the blade to.
Stay away from me! she wanted to shout at him. She couldn’t get the words out—not in a way that made sense. As sometimes happened when she came unglued, Carin lapsed into a language of her own. The sounds that passed her lips weren’t gibberish, but no one ever understood a word she said when she got like this. Carin yelled at the man, in her own private language, and tried to wrench free of his grasp.
“Stop your noise,” he barked. He held her leg tighter and waved his dagger in her face. “If you can’t be quiet, I’ll cut out your tongue.”

About the Author:

Castles in the cornfield provided the setting for Deborah J. Lightfoot’s earliest flights of fancy. On her father’s farm in West Texas, she grew up reading extraordinary tales of adventure and reenacting them behind tall ramparts of sun-drenched corn. She left the farm to earn a bachelor of science degree in journalism and write award-winning books of history and biography, including The LH7 Ranch (University of North Texas Press) and Trail Fever (William Morrow, New York). High on her Bucket List was the desire to try her hand at the genre she most admired. The result is WATERSPELL, a complex, intricately detailed fantasy that begins with Book 1: The Warlock and Book 2: The Wysard, and concludes (for the present) with Book 3: The Wisewoman. But a legal pad filled with notes and tucked away in a desk drawer suggests a possible Book 4 before the saga may fairly be said to be finished.

Review: Tiger's Curse by Colleen Houck

Tiger's Curse
Author: Colleen Houck
Genre: YA/Paranormal
Release Date: May 1, 2012 (Paperback)
Publisher: Splinter

Purchase:         Amazon             B&N

Goodreads Description:

Would you risk it all to change your destiny?

The last thing Kelsey Hayes thought she'd be doing this summer was trying to break a 300-year old Indian curse. With a mysterious white tiger named Ren. Halfway around the world.
But that's exactly what happened.

Face-to-face with dark forces, spellbinding magic, and mystical worlds where nothing is what it seems, Kelsey risks everything to piece together an ancient prophecy that could break the curse forever.
Packed with magic, action-adventure, and romance, the epic Tiger's Curse series will keep you breathless and yearning for more.

Review:

I'm helping Splinter to celebrate the release of Tiger's Curse in paperback this month by doing a review and posting some exclusive new content, including a cookie recipe! I'm very excited to be participating in this tour & a big thanks goes out to Splinter for sending me a copy for review and asking me to participate.

I have heard a lot of great things about this series before reading it and now I can understand why. There is a lot of rich Indian mythology and folklore in the series, which I found really interesting. The concept of the quest and all the trials that the characters must face made this book a fast paced adventure that was hard to put down. The story's background was well written and fit in well with the current plot of the book and the setting was perfect - Colleen couldn't have picked a better place for her story. I really enjoyed the characters and their unique personalities, except I wanted to smack Kelsey a few times throughout the book. She seemed to be especially whiny concerning Ren and she just sounded so dumb! I wanted to shake some sense into her! The romance in the book is sweet and had my stomach fluttering along, but it was a bit syrupy at times. Like I mentioned, many of Kelsey's reactions to Ren made me crazy and annoyed me a bit, but I suppose that's just part of her character's personality. All in all, this was a great read and I'm definitely going to keep reading the series. Colleen brings a new voice and fresh ideas to the young adult genre - this is not your typical shapeshifter story. It's so much more than that! I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to read something that's not cookie-cutter and that stretches their imagination.

Colleen Houck Author Interview
 Tiger’s Curse, paperback

What makes the paperback release different from the hardcover? The paperback release will bring in a whole other group of readers. I have several friends who prefer reading paperbacks over carrying around the heavier hardcovers and they're very excited to get their hands on this new version. There is also the chance to update the book and add bonus material which all my fans know I love to write.

What are you most excited about with the paperback? I'm very excited to share Kelsey's recipes! I'm a foodie as most of you can tell from my books and I can say from experience that there's nothing better than sitting down with a new paperback and a hot batch of Ren's cookies. Light a sandalwood candle too and it's like you're in the story.

Is there something you can tell us about Tiger’s Curse that no one else knows? Yes! Pay close attention to Kelsey's dreams because they are foreshadows of things to come later on in the series.

Ren or Kishan? I honestly love both brothers and want both of them to get their happy endings. I didn't think I'd love Kishan as much as I do but he has solidly wedged himself into my heart.

Kelsey can be sassy! Why did you choose to make her character so empowered? I wanted a heroine who could do all the cool things I'd like to do. I was a big fan of Wonder Woman. She was beautiful and could do amazing things. That's what I wanted for Kelsey. My hope is that my female readers will see that ordinary girls can do extraordinary things.

Has your day-to-day changed since becoming a NYT bestselling author?!? What does your husband think about it? My day to day just gets busier and more hectic every week that passes. My favorite time is when I can just sit down at my computer and get lost in my story. My husband is proud and amazed. He likes to brag about his author wife to perfect strangers and hands out book marks to everyone he meets.

Last question—do you plan on visiting India? You’ve already done so much research about it! I have no immediate plans but I would LOVE to go. I think it would be amazing to see all the locations I've written about. I made a real effort as I wrote to layer my fantasy world on top of real world places because I like the idea of feeling like you could actually step through a doorway into another world.

Kelsey's Recipes: Ren’s Cookies

Ingredients:
2 sticks of butter
¾ cup sugar
¾ cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1 ½ tsp vanilla
¼ tsp salt
¾ cup dark coco powder
2 cups flour
½ tsp baking powder
½ tsp baking soda
1 bag of chocolate chips
¾ cup smooth peanut butter
½ cup brown sugar

Directions: Cream the butter then add sugars. When it’s light and fluffy, add eggs and vanilla. Sift the next 5 dry ingredients and mix with the wet until thoroughly combined. Add one package of chocolate chips (or as many as you like!) to the dough. Mix together the next 2 ingredients to make the peanut butter filling. Then place a spoonful of the chocolate dough on a baking sheet, top with some peanut butter filling, and cover with some more chocolate dough. Bake at 350 degrees for 12-20 minutes depending on cookie size.

Skewered Halo: Review, Excerpt & Giveaway

Skewered Halo
Author: Brenda Youngerman
Genre: General Fiction/Women's Fiction
Release Date: February 14, 2012
Publisher: Strategic Book Publishing

Purchase:                    Amazon                     B&N                        Publisher

Description:

Skewered Halo is like no other story you have ever read! Diane Montrose wakes up one morning to find out that her entire life has been based upon lies and treachery. Everything she thought she knows… she doesn’t!

It’s bad enough that as a young girl her older sister informed Diane that she was placed on her parents’ doorstep and that she was nothing better than garbage. But when, at the age of eighteen, she finally informed her parents of the story they denied the whole thing, yet still sided with the treacherous sister. To make matters worse her sister managed to dictate everything in Diane’s life even though she didn’t know it!

Follow along as the lies, treachery and mystery surrounding Diane are uncovered….. or are they??

Review:

In her novel, Skewered Halo, author Brenda Youngerman allows the reader a look into the heart and soul of a woman whose past consistently haunts her. She has been told her entire life that she doesn't belong - that she is unloved; a piece of garbage. All this is being told to her by her older sister. Even after she has grown up and moved out of her parent's house, her emotional scars define her and she has to deal with several trying situations.

Youngerman's characters, especially Diane, are written with empathy and understanding. The story is well written and has a nice even flow to it, which makes the book go quite fast. I am not a huge women's fiction fan, but I liked the bit of mystery that was woven into the story, as well as seeing how Diane would finally overcome her circumstances. It's a deep novel concerning family, lies, love, and loss and is a wonderful novel for lovers of women's fiction and general fiction alike.

Excerpt:

She slowly wound herself down the hall to the bedrooms. The first door on the right was her son’s room. Tyler had been an angel from the moment he was born. Nothing and no one could ever put out his light. Just watching his wonderment at life could crack even the hardest of shells. No one ever walked away from Tyler without a smile on their face.
When Kyle came along a year later, Tyler welcomed him with open arms, and the boys were inseparable. The room for one immediately became a room for two. Bath time became playtime. She crossed the hall to the tiny bathroom and could picture the two of them playing in the tub. Tears crept into her eyes, and she just let them fall.
She continued her journey to the next bedroom. The bed was made with a pink-ruffled spread, and there were animals waiting on the pillow. Those animals were going to have to wait for a very long time. Diane could see the tiny silhouette of her daughter drawing. “Look, Mommy, I made a pretty picture for you!” She had just smiled at her and said it was nice; she was too busy to take notice. Tears streamed down her cheeks as she went into the master bedroom and reminisced about the day they’d bought the house.
“I hate this bathroom, Gary,” she’d told him. “It’s ridiculous.”
“I know, hon, we’ll get it fixed right away,” he’d promised. That never happened.
Not for the first time, and certainly not for the last, she said, “Gary Montrose! I hope you’re rotting in hell!”

About the Author:

Brenda Youngerman writes about stories that matter. A southern California native coming from a very large family where she never felt like she fit in. “I was the youngest member of a huge family and I never really felt like I belonged there.”

Her first novel, Private Scars, was an expose of what happens to a victim of domestic abuse when they have never been exposed to it. From the moment the first review came out Youngerman realized her calling… that of the voice of the victims.. those who don’t have the strength to speak for themselves. Since Private Scars (2006), Youngerman has published a novel a year, each one exposing another social issue that those in power choose not to discuss. “If one person is helped by one of my novels, that is a good day.”

Skewered Halo takes a look at the filth behind sibling rivalry that goes unnoticed by inattentive parents. Brenda is currently at work at her eighth and ninth novel (simultaneously).

About the Author:
Daniel A. Cohen was just your average business student. Microeconomics, finance, marketing… you name it, he had to do a PowerPoint presentation on it. One dark and stormy night, he was bitten by the radioactive realization that memorizing business jargon could possibly be the most boring activity known to man.

After gaining eagle-eye vision, abs that could grate cheese, and a talent for imagining things (including his cheese-grating abs), he wrote his first novel and began his epic battle against the formidable business jargon. He continues to fight the good fight by playing saxophone and writing YA fantasy, forever hoping his Veil trilogy will help inspire others to join his cause.
