Some Quiet Place (Some Quiet Place #1)
Author: Kelsey Sutton
Genre: YA Fantasy/Paranormal
Release Date: July 8, 2013
Publisher: Flux

Description:

I can’t weep. I can’t fear. I’ve grown talented at pretending.

Elizabeth Caldwell doesn’t feel emotions . . . she sees them. Longing, Shame, and Courage materialize around her classmates. Fury and Resentment appear in her dysfunctional home. They’ve all given up on Elizabeth because she doesn’t succumb to their touch. All, that is, save one—Fear. He’s intrigued by her, as desperate to understand the accident that changed Elizabeth’s life as she is herself.

Elizabeth and Fear both sense that the key to her past is hidden in the dream paintings she hides in the family barn. But a shadowy menace has begun to stalk her, and try as she might, Elizabeth can barely avoid the brutality of her life long enough to uncover the truth about herself. When it matters most, will she be able to rely on Fear to save her?

1. What was your inspiration for writing the Some Quiet Place?

Fear. The answer to this is always Fear. He was the very first character to show up, and everything else followed. He's just such a formidable presence! It may be creepy - also, I may be biased - but I totally have a crush on him. He's so arrogant and unpredictable. And beautiful. Don't forget beautiful.

2. Do you have to do any special research for the book?

I did have to research everything about milking cows. There are so many different options and machines! I think if I'm ever thrown into a situation where my life depends on getting a bottle of milk from a cow, I'm good to go.

3. Are any of the characters based off of people you know?

Yes, actually. Quite a few of them. A couple of these are Maggie and Morgan, who you'll meet when you actually read the book. I didn't do this intentionally while I was writing, but cancer and autism have affected me and the people in my life, and everything kind of came pouring out. I only hope I did these topics justice and it rings as true as it felt during the writing.

4. What tips do you have for aspiring writers?

This changes daily. Today I would say to write every day, even when you don't feel like it. There are all kinds of articles out there about not forcing yourself, or taking breaks, or waiting for inspiration, and there's validity to all of that. But it really is like a muscle. The more we do it and the more consistent we are, the easier it is to dive in. It doesn't have to be good or lengthy. Just something. And more often than not, it brings you that much closer to the end of that manuscript.

5. What's next for you?

I just turned in the companion to SOME QUIET PLACE, actually! It takes place in the same world, with the personified Emotions, but the story takes place in an entirely new setting with an entirely new cast of characters. I'm ridiculously excited. The premise is a girl being influenced by Revenge and Forgiveness must make a choice between them when the man responsible for the deaths of her family is released from prison.
Thanks so much for stopping by and answering some questions for us today Kelsey!
Name: Courage

A Typical Summons: He gives me the assignment, his eyes saying more than his words ever could. Joy and Courage stand by him, both touching his shoulders. Joshua’s face is a mask of mischief, but the presence of the Emotions shows me the truth.

Physical Traits: He has a long nose, noble-looking, and his hair lodges against the back of his neck in tight black curls.

Quote from SQP: Courage takes this in with a thoughtful expression. “You are very young to know so much. And knowledge in our world is dangerous. Remember that.”

  2. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity!
Envy would definitely be the one emotion that would come to me most often. Being envious of others just motivates me to be better!
