I never believed in ghosts. Until one tried to kill me.

When Kennedy Waters finds her mother dead, her world begins to unravel. She doesn’t know that paranormal forces in a much darker world are the ones pulling the strings. Not until identical twins Jared and Lukas Lockhart break into Kennedy’s room and destroy a dangerous spirit sent to kill her. The brothers reveal that her mother was part of an ancient secret society responsible for protecting the world from a vengeful demon — a society whose five members were all murdered on the same night.

Now Kennedy has to take her mother’s place in the Legion if she wants to uncover the truth and stay alive. Along with new Legion members Priest and Alara, the teens race to find the only weapon that might be able to destroy the demon — battling the deadly spirits he controls every step of the way.

Suspense, romance, and the paranormal meet in this chilling urban fantasy, the first book in a new series from Kami Garcia, bestselling coauthor of the Beautiful Creatures novels.

Unbreakable is the first book in a new young adult paranormal series that follows main character Kennedy Waters as her entire world is turned upside down and backwards. Life seems okay for Kennedy - a typical teen life - until the night she comes home to find her mom dead. After that, Kennedy is lost and broken. A few nights later, a spirit tries to kill Kennedy in the middle of the night and she's saved by a pair of mysterious (and completely gorgeous) twins - Lukas and Jared Lockhart. They tell Kennedy that they are a part of a secret group known as The Legion and that she's a part of it too. The Legion is a group of five members who are dedicated to protecting the world from a demon. According to the twins, Kennedy's mom was the fifth member of the group and they've been looking for her because she's in terrible danger. Now they're on the run, looking for pieces of a weapon called The Shift that promises to destroy the demon for good. Now all Kennedy has to do is learn the ropes, believe in herself, and admit that she just might really be a part of the Legion - without getting killed in the process.

This was one of the most phenomenal paranormal novels that I've ever read. The plot was unique and completely original with tons of supernatural elements and paranormal activity throughout. The characters were all incredibly well written, each one having their own distinct personality, strengths, weaknesses, and secrets. I loved getting to know all five of the members of the Legion and their quirks. The background of the story had me enthralled from the beginning. I wanted to learn as much as I could about this secret group of people - what their goal was, what they actually did, how they formed - as well as learning as much as I could about the demons and the spirits that lurk underneath the surface of our world. The author used vivid imagery and detailed descriptions that had me immersed in the book right alongside Kennedy from the start. There was a small part at the beginning where things were a bit slow - mostly introducing characters and concepts - but once the action started, it didn't let up until the last sentence. I found myself rabidly reading each page to see what was going to happen next. There's a great blending of genres in the book including paranormal, fantasy, supernatural, action, adventure, thriller, and romance - so there's definitely something for everyone in the book. There's so much more I could say about the book but I think it would just turn into fangirling out and rambling, so I'll just finish by saying that my review can't do this book justice. The only problem I have now is having to wait SO long for the next book to come out. Very highly recommended for fans of all genres, especially YA fantasy, supernatural and paranormal fiction.
