There are no heroes.

Ten years ago, Calamity came. It was a burst in the sky that gave ordinary men and women extraordinary powers. The awed public started calling them Epics.

But Epics are no friend of man. With incredible gifts came the desire to rule. And to rule man you must crush his wills.

Nobody fights the Epics... nobody but the Reckoners. A shadowy group of ordinary humans, they spend their lives studying Epics, finding their weaknesses, and then assassinating them.

And David wants in. He wants Steelheart—the Epic who is said to be invincible. The Epic who killed David's father. For years, like the Reckoners, David's been studying, and planning—and he has something they need. Not an object, but an experience.

He's seen Steelheart bleed. And he wants revenge.

Steelheart is the beginning of an inventive and thrilling new YA science fiction/fantasy series. It follows main character David as he devotes his life to learning as much as he can about the Epics - humans with superhuman powers who rule the rest of the world. Especially the Epic who killed his father and currently runs the city of Newcago - Steelheart. David has been learning as much about the Epics as he can, along with the vigilante group hunting them - the Reckoners. David's convinced that if he joins with the Reckoners, together they can finally stop Steelheart and the Epic's reign.

This novel was exceptionally well imagined and unique. I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked it up, but I was immediately drawn into the fascinating world that the author created. I loved learning all about this alternate world - the history, how the world became the way it is now, and how people live in this place. I was completely fascinated by the Epics - all their powers and weaknesses along with their diverse personalities and villianish styles. The Reckoners were a curious group that I enjoyed getting to know. Each of the team had their own personalities with strengths and weaknesses, which made them realistic and accessible. David was a great main character - smart, devoted, brave, strong and determined to do the right thing for the world concerning the Epics. The world in the book, as I mentioned before, was so vivid and detailed that I felt like I was right there alongside David and the Reckoners. The writing was fast paced with lots of action and awesome fighting. I'm really glad that this is going to be a series because there's so much more to the characters and the world that the author created and I want to read about it all! Highly recommended for fans of science fiction, fantasy and dystopias, as well as someone who wants an exciting and original story.

  2. I loved just about everything in this book. I thought Brandon Sanderson did a fantastic job with the world of Steelheart, and the Epics. And David- so cute and at the same time so determined. (I loved those odd little phrases he used throughout the book- and his crush). Great review :)
