Book Review: Mercy by Rebecca Lim

Mercy (Mercy #1)
Author: Rebecca Lim
Genre: YA Fantasy/Paranormal
Release Date: February 12, 2013
Publisher: Disney Hyperion

Description:

Mercy is an exile from heaven with shattered memories of who she used to be. She's doomed to "wake" repeatedly on earth, each time in a new body, and assuming a new life. During the day she survives in the human world on instinct, and at night her dreams are haunted by her lost love, who pleads with her to find him. This time is different. When Mercy wakes up she meets Ryan, an eighteen-year-old reeling from the loss of his twin sister, Lauren, who was kidnapped two years ago. Only Mercy and Ryan believe his sister is still alive. For the first time she can remember, Mercy has a purpose: she can help. So she doesn't understand why the man in her dreams cautions her not to interfere. But as Ryan and Mercy come closer to solving the mystery of Lauren's disappearance, danger looms just one step behind. Will Mercy be able to harness her extraordinary power in time? The first in a dazzling new series, Mercy masterfully weaves romance, mystery, and the supernatural into a spellbinding tale that readers will devour.

Mercy is the first book in a series that follows a girl named Mercy who was exiled from Heaven and can't fully remember who she truly is. She is thrust into a different human form each time she "wakes" and she must assume the life of the person she has taken over. Her only solace comes at night, when she is visited by her soul mate in her dreams. Things are different when Mercy wakes this time as a teen girl staying in a host home whose daughter, Lauren, was taken and never seen from again. Lauren's brother - Ryan - is different than most people Mercy has met and they feel an instant connection to one another. Mercy finally feels she has a purpose in this body - she is going to help Ryan find his sister. As Mercy and Ryan close in on the person behind Lauren's kidnapping - more girls begin to go missing and it seems that Mercy has found herself the newest target. Will Mercy and Ryan be able to find and save Lauren in time? Has Mercy finally found her true calling while being trapped inside these bodies?

This was an absolutely mind blowing novel that went above and beyond any expectations I had for it. Mercy is a unique main character who only has bits and pieces of her true memory and identity and is constantly searching for her soul mate. She inhabits the body of a seemingly random girl and assumes their life until she is jarred out of that body and wakes in a new one. Mercy is a strong female lead who exhibits courage and bravery along with compassion, sympathy, and love. We get to glimpse a bit of her true origins in the book and it really intrigued me. The history and story behind Mercy and the others like her was captivating and I'm really hoping to read about it more in the other books in the series. Towards the end of the book, Mercy comes into her powers and is able to do amazing things. I loved that she finally is able to tap into her natural form and help others. The way that these supernatural occurrences are described in the book are vivid and incredibly detailed. I'm really hoping to learn more about Mercy's history, her soul mate, and her purpose on Earth in the following books. The plot was really intriguing and original. It was also fast paced and had me turning the pages as fast as I could to see what would happen next. The book was a blend of fantasy, action, adventure, and mystery with some romance thrown in for good measure. I loved how the author easily mixed genres together to enhance the story. This was a captivating and enchanting first book in a series that promises to have readers devouring every page. Highly recommended for fans of YA fantasy and paranormal fiction!

Book Review: Mila 2.0 by Debra Driza

Mila 2.0 (Mila 2.0 #1)
Author: Debra Driza
Genre: YA Science Fiction/Fantasy
Release Date: March 12, 2013
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books

Description:

Mila 2.0 is the first book in an electrifying sci-fi thriller series about a teenage girl who discovers that she is an experiment in artificial intelligence.

Mila was never meant to learn the truth about her identity. She was a girl living with her mother in a small Minnesota town. She was supposed to forget her past—that she was built in a secret computer science lab and programmed to do things real people would never do.

Now she has no choice but to run—from the dangerous operatives who want her terminated because she knows too much and from a mysterious group that wants to capture her alive and unlock her advanced technology. However, what Mila’s becoming is beyond anyone’s imagination, including her own, and it just might save her life.

Mila 2.0 is Debra Driza’s bold debut and the first book in a Bourne Identity-style trilogy that combines heart-pounding action with a riveting exploration of what it really means to be human. Fans of I Am Number Four will love Mila for who she is and what she longs to be—and a cliffhanger ending will leave them breathlessly awaiting the sequel.

Mila 2.0 was an edgy science fiction novel that far exceeded my expectations. It follows Mila as she and her mother have to relocate to the small town in Minnesota after the fire that killed her father. She's having some trouble adjusting to the change, but finally makes a connection with a cute new guy when things go terribly wrong. After a car accident one day after school, Mila discovers the dark secret her mother has been keeping from her: she isn't really a girl at all but an android developed to blend in with teenage girls without detection. The woman she thought was her mother is really one of the scientists who helped create her and her father - along with his death - and  the rest of Mila's memories were all implanted into her. Now the government has found their hiding spot and they will stop at nothing until Mila is back at the compound and her mother is punished for stealing her. Even though Mila's world is crashing down around her and the android functions that were suppressed are now coming out - she still can't shake the gut feeling that she's more than just a robot. She's a girl with real feelings and emotions. She needs to keep her mother and herself safe at all costs - even if it means using becoming more android than human.

This was a truly unique and fantastically imagined science fiction novel. I didn't think I would be able to connect with a main character who was a robot - but I instantly liked Mila. She was full of pain over her father's death and she was dealing with so many typical teen problems - a new school, making friends, crushing on a guy, etc. When she found out the truth about herself, I was just as confused and crushed as she was. I felt like I was riding on the same emotional roller coaster with her - experiencing each up and down in her life right alongside her. She was a really strong female lead that didn't give up and showed great amounts of courage and growth. I'm eager to see how she will grow further in the next book. The plot was fast paced and I literally couldn't put the book down. It was full of action, adventure, fantasy and even a bit of romance. There were so many different genres being blended that it's hard to label this novel as just one kind. I liked that it mixed so many different concepts and ideas into one thrilling book. The writing was exceptional and shows that the author has true talent. There was a part at the end of the book that I really hated (those of you who have read the book know what I'm referring to), but other than that - I thought it was a captivating and adrenaline filled novel. I am already eagerly awaiting the next book in the series so I can see where Mila and the story goes from here. I highly recommend this book for fans of well written novels of all genres. This was a thrilling first book in what promises to be a truly fantastic series!

The Sweet Revenge of Celia Door Blog Tour: Review & Giveaway

The Sweet Revenge of Celia Door
Author: Karen Finneyfrock
Genre: YA Contemporary
Release Date: February 21, 2013
Publisher: Viking Juvenile

Description:

That’s the day the trouble started.
The trouble that nearly ruined my life.
The trouble that turned me Dark.
The trouble that begs me for revenge.

Celia Door enters her freshman year of high school with giant boots, dark eyeliner, and a thirst for revenge against Sandy Firestone, the girl who did something unspeakable to Celia last year.

But then Celia meets Drake, the cool new kid from New York City who entrusts her with his deepest, darkest secret. When Celia’s quest for justice threatens her relationship with Drake, she’s forced to decide which is sweeter: revenge or friendship.

This debut novel from Karen Finneyfrock establishes her as a bright, bold, razor-sharp new voice for teens.

The Sweet Revenge of Celia Door is a delightful surprise of a novel. After reading the description, I though that this would be a fun read about a high school girl exacting revenge against a couple mean girls in her class for something they had done to her. I couldn't have been further from the truth about this book - and that is putting it mildly. There is so much more to this novel than meets the eye at first glance. I'm glad that the description caught my interest because I would have missed out on a real gem otherwise.

This book does focus a bit on a teenage girl wanting - needing - to exact revenge on two "mean girls" who did an awful thing to her in school the previous year. But the plot isn't really even focused on that aspect. It really focused on Celia - the main character - and her best friend and new kid to town - Drake - and their struggles. Celia is a great main character because she's very raw and realistic. She's an outcast at her school because of The Book incident - which is the reason behind her need for revenge. She's deeply flawed due to this incident as well as the separation of her parents that happened around the same time. Instead of letting herself get hurt even more, Celia has built up thick walls around herself and has become what she describes as Dark. Drake is another wonderful character in the novel. He's a handsome new guy at Celia's school and the only friend she has. He also reveals his deepest secret to her alone - he's gay. He's dealing with feelings for his best friend back home in New York and also with the stress of coming out to his friends and family. Celia and Drake must both learn to love and accept themselves for who they truly are and not care about what others think about them. That is one of the main themes of this book. Another deals with the very real topic of bullying in our schools and the emotional damage it inflicts on the recipients. I liked that bullying is discussed in depth and not just dealt with easily. It showed the affect it had on both Celia and Drake - and also shows us the damage it causes on people in everyday life. I have to admit that I really connected with Celia in the novel due to being bullied in a very similar fashion during my own high school years. I was able to emotionally connect and sympathize with her thoughts and feelings - especially after reading about what happened with The Book and its affects on her. The writing was well done and had some of Celia's poetry mixed in, which I think gives it originality. Overall, this is a book that may seem fun and edgy on the surface, but holds so much more depth and levity between its pages. Definitely recommended for readers of all ages and for fans of YA contemporary fiction!!

CHAPTER 5

We head south through town, passing the school and blacksmith
shop and the numerous houses, including my own,
that create the border of the village. Where the dirt fades
away, tall grass begins, sprouting up in patches, until finally
we are entering the woods. I don’t usually hunt along the
southern portion of the forest. It’s marshier, and the larger
game sticks to the drier areas. The ground grows soft beneath
our feet as we continue, but there’s been little rain lately and
we avoid sinking into the doughy earth. When we reach the
coarse thicket that I know to be concealing the lake from
view, Emma grabs my arm and pulls me to a standstill.
“This way,” she says, motioning to our right.
“But it’s straight ahead. On the other side of this brush.”
“I know, but the view’s better if you climb the hill.”
“View? There’s no view.”
“Trust, Gray. Have trust.” And then without waiting to see
if I follow, she starts cutting through the trees and brush, no
path to guide her. She holds her dress up about her knees,
and I stare at her legs as she steps over fallen logs and rocks
in our path. We move slowly and up a steady incline. Maybe
there will be a view after all.
When we break loose from the trees, I’m nearly speechless.
We are standing on a hill that overlooks the water. From
this angle it appears rather small and narrow, its thinness
stretching out of view beyond another crest in the land.
Surrounding us are the bellflowers, tall, thick stems that
grow higher than my waist. Delicate purple petals hang from
each, grouped together and dancing in the soft breeze. The
southernmost portion of the Wall is barely visible in the distance.
Emma leads us into the field and toward a lone rock that
sits on the hillside. The purple flowers nearly reach her
shoulders, but she climbs out of their grasp.
“I used to come here with my uncle,” she tells me as we get
comfortable on the stone. “Almost daily. At least until . . . you
know. I was nine when he was lost. I haven’t been back in
years.”
“It’s beautiful from up here,” I say. “And, to be fair,
it seems much smaller from this angle. I can almost
understand why you called it a pond.”
“See?”
“Yeah, well, it’s still a lake. I’m just trying to be nice.”
She sighs. “Ah, yes. That must be difficult for you.”
“You know, despite what you might think, I’m not a mean
person.”
“What you did to Chalice wasn’t mean?”
“That’s different.”
“It was still mean.”
“Okay, fine. I’m not inherently a mean person.”
“I’ll give you that for now.” She plucks a clump of grass and
sprinkles it into the breeze.
“So why’d you do it?” she asks, looking at me. “Why were
you honest about the matchup?”
I’m not quite sure how to answer the question. There are
explanations on many levels. I don’t want to be a father. I
hate the formality of slatings. I want her, but not if it’s forced.
“You were being honest, right?” she asks. “You’re not going
to try to attack me later or something are you? I’m stronger
than I look. Everyone always thinks I’m this kind, caring
thing, because of my healing hands, but I can be forceful if
I need to.”
“So I’ve heard.” I chuckle. “And, yes, I was being honest.”
She gives me that look again, the same one from the Clinic.
I still can’t read it.
“I hate the slatings,” she says.
“Me, too.”
“How many have you gone through with?”
“You don’t want to know.” I can count them on two hands
and even though it’s been a long time since I’ve slept with
anyone, the number is still more than I want to admit to her.
“You?”
“Just one.” So the rumors are wrong. “You remember Craw
Phoenix?” she asks.
I nod. He was lost to the Heist about a year and a half ago.
“I liked him,” she continues. “And I mean really liked him.
It was so nice for that month, and for some reason I thought
it would last and we’d have something. I don’t know what. It
was stupid, really. I wanted to continue slatings with him, but
I guess the feeling wasn’t mutual. Two weeks later he was seeing
Sasha Quarters, and then he was gone completely.”
“We’re all gone eventually,” I say. “That’s half the reason
I hate it, too. I don’t see the point of the scheduling and the
moving around. I only have ’til I’m eighteen. I’d rather find
something good, something comfortable, and stay in it.”
She gives me a half smile. “You mean be with one person?
Like, beyond the duration of the slating?”
“Forget the slating. Pretend there’s no slating and there’s
no rules and there’s no Claysoot and then, yes, one person.
Forever. Is that weird?”
It’s quiet for a moment. I know it’s an odd question, completely
hypothetical and outlandish, and for a second I
think she’s going to laugh at me.
“You know, some hawks mate for life.” She bites her lip and
looks back out over the water. It’s a ripple of icy silver in the
earth, the valley bleeding blue into its depths.
“Really?”
“Yeah, the red-tailed ones. My uncle and I used to see them
here each year. Always returning, always the same pairs
together. If the birds pick one mate for life, why can’t we?”
I feel foolish for a moment. I spend hours in the woods
every day and I’ve never noticed this in the hawks. Then
again, I was never looking for it.
“Maybe some animals mate for life and others don’t,” I say.
“Maybe we’re not supposed to be like the birds.”
“Maybe we are.”
She looks so pretty, sitting there, twisting grass between
her tan fingers. I wonder if we are the only people who
wish this, who long to ignore the matchups and procedures
and settle into something that feels right. There I go again,
thinking with the feelings in my chest instead of using my
head. If we were like the birds, we’d die out in a matter of
decades, once all the men were gone. I still wish it were possible
though, wish I were a bird and Emma were a bird and
we could fly away without looking back.
“You really are nothing like him,” Emma says. It pulls me
from my thoughts and I find her staring at me, again with the
same inquisitive look I can’t read. “Like Blaine,” she clarifies.
“I know, I know. He’s kind and responsible, and I’m reckless.
He thinks things through. I react.”
“Yeah, I know, but I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad
thing. Maybe it’s good to just react, to not overthink everything.
If we were wild and free, like the birds, you’d survive.
Blaine probably wouldn’t. He’d be too worried with pleasing
everyone and making everything fair.”
“Sounds like I’m pretty selfish.”
“No, that’s not what I meant.” She wrings her fingers anxiously.
“I’m trying to say that I think doing what you feel can’t
always be easy, but at least you’re being true to yourself.”
“It’s okay, Emma, you don’t have to try to make me seem
like a better person. You don’t have to justify why it’s all right
to spend time with me.”
“No, I’m not . . . ,” she says, frustration on her face.
“Dammit, Gray, I’m trying to say I admire you for what you
said about the slating, that I agree with you, that it’s not crazy
to want to be like the birds, but above all, I’m trying to apologize
for how I’ve judged you all these years. You’re different
from Blaine but maybe not in a bad way. Maybe in a very good
way, and I’m only seeing it for the first time.”
She’s staring right into me with those eyes of hers, dark
orbs as large as walnuts. Something in my chest surges.
Suddenly it is very warm.
“You want to go for a swim?” I ask, jumping from the rock.
As much as I want to be near her, I need distance. It’s those
words. What do they mean? Earlier today she despised me,
thought me wicked for hitting Chalice, and now she admires
me? All because I follow those feelings in my chest?
“Swim?” she asks. “Right now? It’s not even that hot out.”
“Suit yourself,” I say, tearing away from her and running
down the flower-filled hillside. When I reach the edge of the
lake, I turn back and can see Emma gazing down at me, perplexed.
She’s probably still trying to figure out why her kind
words sent me running.
“You coming?” I yell back up the hill. She shrugs her shoulders
and then hops from the rock.
I pull off my boots and strip down to my drawers and am in
the water before Emma is even halfway to the lake. The cold
hits me savagely, biting at my lungs. It’s refreshing, though,
and I feel like I can breathe again, Emma’s words falling aside
as I kick into open water. I’m floating on my back, staring
up at an impressive mass of clouds forming overhead, when
something splashes beside me. I twist over and see Emma
along the shore, tossing pebbles in my direction. She has
waded in up to her shins, the hem of her white dress gathered
in her arms.
“Are you coming in or not?”
She shakes her head. “It’s too cold.”
“Wimp.”
“Oh, please.”
“Well, you are.” I swim in until I’m close enough to the shore
to splash her with a well-placed kick. Water catches
the front of her dress and her face goes wide with shock. It
probably feels like ice to her.
“Oh, you’re going to get it,” she shouts.
“How? I’m already in.” I swim back toward the lake’s center.
She’s fuming. She tugs her dress up over her shoulders
and throws it aside before running and diving headlong into
the water. She’s the better swimmer and catches up quickly.
With a strong kick her hands are on my shoulders and pushing
me beneath the surface. I’m too busy admiring how her
undershirt clings to her body to prepare myself for the dunk.
I resurface, sputtering and coughing.
“Who’s the wimp now?” she asks. Her hair is wet and
stringy, pieces of it clinging to her neck. It looks dark in the
water, nearly as black as mine. I lunge at her, but she’s too
quick. She darts away, slipping underwater and resurfacing
behind me, where, to my embarrassment, she dunks me
again. We continue like this for a while, me always trying to
catch her and she easily avoiding my attacks. When I finally
surrender, she’s dunked me four times and eluded me seven.
“Fine, you win,” I admit as we climb out of the lake. “But I
would slaughter you in an archery match.” I pull on my pants
and use my shirt to dry my hair.
“You hunt daily, Gray. That’s hardly fair.” She’s turned away
from me, pulling her dress on. She shakes out her wet hair
and braids it back.
“It doesn’t have to be fair to be true.”
“Fine. Teach me,” she retorts.
“Really?”
“Yes, teach me how to shoot and then we’ll have a match.”
She spins to face me. There are wet patches where her dress
meets the curved parts of her body.
“Okay,” I agree. “Start tomorrow?”
“Tomorrow.”
We walk home in silence. I try to figure out what it all
means, Emma being so nice, so playful. The last time the two
of us got along so well was when I was six.
“Today was actually a lot of fun,” I tell her as we approach
the outskirts of town.
“Yeah,” she agrees, “like being a kid again.”
We cut down a side street and head for the Clinic. Up ahead
I can see Maude and Clara sitting outside the Danner sisters’
house.
“Emma, take my hand.”
“What? Why?”
“Just take it.” I reach out and grab hers before she can argue.
Her skin is soft and delicate, unlike my callused hunting
hands. I spread my fingers between hers and squeeze them
lightly as we carry on. My chest heaves ever so slightly. As
we near Maude, I watch how her eyes linger on our entwined
hands and I flash her a devious smile as we walk by.

Of Silver and Beasts (A Goddess Wars Novel)
Author: Trisha Wolfe
Release Date: June 1, 2013
Genre: New Adult Dark Fantasy
Cover Reveal Organized by: YA Bound
Cover Designed by: Steven Novak

Summary from Goodreads:

In the sand-covered queendom of Cavan, the goddess once saved a young Kaliope’s life, preventing the mercury her father attempted to hide in her blood from reaching her heart. Now, a cybernetic clamp filters it, but the silver streaks swirling faintly beneath her skin are a constant reminder that she’s different.

When nineteen-year-old Kaliope is chosen as head of the Nactue Guard, she becomes the sworn protector to her empress. In the midst of an invasion on a neighboring land, Kaliope is placed in charge of guarding Prince Caben, the last heir to his kingdom. But when they’re attacked by the feared Otherworlders, Caben and Kaliope are abducted and taken below to a realm where they must fight for their life in a caged arena.

Kaliope struggles to protect her princely charge, keeping him and herself alive while battling inhumanly opponents, and trying to save the stolen, sacred relic that will restore her empress’s life force and all of Cavan. And if she can somehow awaken the goddess within her, she may save what’s most important.

***Excerpt***

I open my mouth to say something comforting, but I’m unsure of what. In this moment, I’m reminded that I know little about him. Other than the sarcasm and desire to understand nothing of my queendom, he hasn’t allowed me past the surface. But then, I have my own walls, hiding things I’d never want him or any other to know. And I understand that need to hide them. You can’t trust anyone. “Caben…” I start, but still can’t find the right words. He lowers his hand from his face, never taking his eyes off the glinting water top. “You’re right,” he finally says. “Let’s find the access to Lilly’s section.” A hollow pang hits my chest, and I’m not sure why. Something in his voice sounds lost, broken. I imagine the gears around my heart spinning faster, trying to keep up with my racing heart. When he sidesteps me, I reach out and grab his arm. “Caben, I didn’t mean—” “It’s fine, Kal,” he snaps. “We have work to do.” “No, I’ve said something to offend you.” I drop my hand, but keep close to him, not allowing him to leave my side. Goddess, trying to understand the male brain is harder than anything in protector training. I’ve heard people say that you have to tip-toe around a woman’s emotions, but a man’s ego is every bit as fragile, if not more so. He releases a heavy breath through his nose and walks back to the pool. He sits down along the edge and rolls up his pants, then slips off his boots. “I honestly don’t think Bax or his goons will be returning tonight.” He sinks his bare feet into the water and sighs. Glancing at the back of the cave, I plant my hands on my hips. We don’t have time for indulgencies, but the prince is still my charge. If it were my empress, I’d give her anything she’d ask for. Allow her as much time as she needed to collect herself. I have to watch over his mental state as well as protect him, so I try to push the pending need to find Lilly aside and sit down next to him. “Here,” he says, turning his hand out near my crossed feet. “You have to feel this.” A smile tugs at the corner of my mouth. “I can remove my own—” “Have you never been pampered a day in your life?” he asks, lifting an eyebrow. “I know that the Nactue are fierce and will put a hurt on any man for touching them. But try to relax.” “Is that the rumor in Perinya?” “What?” I bite my lip, suddenly regretting my blurt. “Nothing. Never mind.” From the corner of my eye, I see his lips pucker into a pinched smile, as if he’s trying not to. “Ah,” he says, like he’s made some great universal connection. “Well, there are many whisperings about the Nactue. Some I dare not repeat for fear I’d leave here missing a limb, but that’s one, yes.” He takes my booted foot and begins to unlace it. “I’ve heard that the empress’s protectors are untouchable—forbidden to give themselves to men. And that they’ll snap a man’s neck just for making an advance.” My mouth drops open. Appalled, I counter, “That’s not true.” “All right,” he says, as if he hasn’t just insulted my very existence. “It’s only rumors. Things men jaw about in pubs. The unattainable woman is a fantasy, Kal. Don’t be offended.” “Unattainable?” I grit my teeth, trying to maintain my composure. “Tell me, prince. Do men in your country just go around bedding every woman they can in order to keep them compliant?” I shake my head. “If their fantasy is a woman that would have nothing to do with them, it seems to me it’s their way of feeding their egos after being rejected.” His eyes widen. “No! How does your brain come up with these—” He bites off his words, his lips thin as he presses them together. “Look, it was a joke.” I nod, many times. “Another joke. I’m glad that our hard work and sacrifice is amusing to the men of Perinya.” Caben lets out another sigh and slowly pulls off my boot. His warm fingers skim my calf as he inches up my pant leg. “Just stick your foot in,” he says, then adds lower, “while I stick mine in my mouth.” Unexpectedly, I laugh. “At least it’s now clean,” I say. “Would you like some help getting it to your face?”

Dark Tide Blog Tour: Review

Dark Tide

Author: Elizabeth Haynes
Genre: Mystery/Thriller/Suspense
Release Date: March 12, 2013
Publisher: Harper Paperbacks

Description:

The author of the acclaimed debut thriller Into the Darkest Corner returns with a taut, gripping murder mystery featuring a compelling heroine who unwittingly finds herself caught in an underworld of murder, corruption, and betrayal.

The first time Genevieve saw it, she knew it was the one: Revenge of the Tide, "an odd sort of a name for a boat." Genevieve had finally escaped the stressful demands of her London sales job and achieved her dream--to leave the city behind and start a new life aboard a houseboat in Kent. She left the boat's name as it was. Revenge had character after all, and living in a marina made her feel a bit safer, a little less lonely; almost as if the boat looked after her, hid her away from view.

But her dreams are shattered the night of her boat-warming party when a body washes up, and to Genevieve's horror, she recognizes the victim as a close friend from nights dancing on-stage at a private members' club, the Barclay. She isn't about to tell the police, though; next to no one knew what Genevieve did every Friday and Saturday night to save money for her escape, and she sees no reason to reveal her past. The death can't have anything to do with her. Or so she thinks.

Soon the lull of the waves against Revenge feels anything but soothing, as Genevieve begins to receive mysterious calls and can't reach the one person who links the present danger with her history at the club. And then there is the parcel on her boat she's meant to be safekeeping for an old flame, which seems to be putting her in jeopardy. As Genevieve begins to fear for her safety, she recalls the moment when it had all started to go horribly wrong: the night she recognized her day-time boss in the crowd of customers at the Barclay. . . .

With Dark Tide, Elizabeth Haynes builds on the promise of her outstanding debut Into the Darkest Corner. Told in dual narratives that interweave past and present, this dark, sexy, exquisitely chilling thriller proves her "initial success was no accident" (Sunday Express).

Dark Tide is a dark and edgy thriller that follows Genevieve after she finds an old friend's body washed up after a boat-warming party. She doesn't think that her friend's death has any connection to her or their shared past as private dancers for a member's only club - that is, until she begins receiving strange phone calls and isn't able to get in touch with the only person who can link her to her history at the club. Soon Genevieve finds herself in the sights of a killer who is determined to silence her and she begins to piece together the terrible events that may lead her right to the heart of the mystery - and the murder.

This was an intriguing suspense novel that shows the ample talent of the writer. The plot was detailed and vividly imagined; so much that I easily felt myself slip inside the story alongside Genevieve. The happenings, characters, and settings are all intricately detailed and described so that I could simply shut my eyes and see everything before me. The characters were well rounded - especially Genevieve, who was a strong female lead with a tough attitude. The other characters weren't as well developed, but weren't overly stereotypical or cliched. The main story was a great mystery to unravel and I highly enjoyed attempting to figure out the murderer before the characters did. The writing was fast paced, but not rushed, and easily intertwined the various threads of the plot into a great narrative. Highly recommended for fans of thrillers and suspense fiction.

Release Blitz & Giveaway: Resisting the Bad Boy by Violet Duke

Vilolet-Duke

Resisting the Bad Boy (Nice Girls to Love #1)
Author: Violet Duke
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Description:

Abby Bartlett is the quintessential nice girl. Between teaching, volunteering, completing her PhD, and helping her best friend raise his daughter, Abby never gets the chance to be anything but nice. That is, until the all-wrong-for-her man she’s only ever known from afar starts daring her to simply take that chance for herself. His sage advice? Try something wild and fast.

Preferably him.

An unbridled, hotshot attorney with a not-so-little black book, Connor Sullivan has earned himself quite the bad boy reputation. But in his defense, he’s a very conscientious one. He knows far too well that sometimes in life, love isn’t enough…or worse, not even a factor at all. To avoid that misery—and repel the drama—Connor always makes his one and only rule crystal clear right from the start. Absolutely nothing more than a month.

Turns out, a whole lot can happen in one month.

“Why you little—”

Connor launched at Abby as she shrieked out in laughter and tried ducking around him to make for the door.  Snatching her around the waist, he hoisted her cackling body over his shoulder and upended her back onto the bed.  “You set me up.”

Now unliddable, her giggles effervesced, giving zero credence to her perfectly scandalized denials.  He trapped her under him and buried his grin against the curve of her neck, feeling disproportionately victorious at the gasp she couldn’t contain when he skimmed his lips over her collarbone.

The woman was getting to him.  This time, when his lips found her soft skin again, it was with purpose.  “You planted that wicked little bag-o-fun there for me to find, admit it.”

She gave an Oscar-worthy gasp at the accusation. “What?  What possible reason would I have had to do that?”

“To drive me up the wall?  Send me bursting through my zipper?”  He nipped at her earlobe playfully.  “Though I guess I should be flattered to be the reason you bought all that stuff.”

The cutest derisive snort he’d ever heard shot out of her like a torpedo with impeccable aim.  “Breaking news, Connor: scientists have in fact discovered that the earth doesn’t revolve around you.  Women buy toys for themselves all the time.”

He nearly bit off his tongue to avoid even thinking about Abby having any sort of toy-based fun.  “I still call foul.  When you and I agreed to this who’ll-beg-first stint, you didn’t say you’d be weaponizing your attacks.”

“Weapons?”  She blinked innocently.  “You make them sound so sinister.  I’d say they’re more like…private tools.  Survival tools, if you will.  For my time here.  Naturally, you were never meant to see them.”

Bull.  Next, you’ll tell me the snowflake masquerading as underwear in that bag is worn strictly for comfort.  Hell, I’ve seen more fabric on the teeny doilies in Skylar’s toy tea sets—”

“Aw, I remember those,” she cut in softly with a smile.  “She used to go on and on about how her ‘bestest Uncle Connor’ hosted the fanciest dress-up tea parties.”

“I wore suits,” he clarified gruffly, “and don’t change the subject.  Why buy sexy lingerie if not to have them be seen?”

By me.  He didn’t have to say it out loud, they were both thinking it.  And his ego was celebrating it.

“Easy access,” she eventually answered, straight-faced.

His imagination went nuts.  Picturing Abby wearing the microscopic scrap of white lace he saw earlier for private ‘easy access’ unhinged him.  He shackled her wrists above her head with one hand and began tickling her ribs.  “Another foul.”

“Stop!” she screeched and dissolved into a breathless puddle of mirth.  “Okay, I admit it!  It was a dirty, dirty foul on my part.  You should definitely take a free throw shot.”

He paused, wondering where she was going with this.

She pointed to the trash can.  “There’s the basket; my new panties can be the ball…since yours are clearly in a twist.”

Incredulous, he dialed up the tickle torture to merciless.

Her squealing ‘I-take-it-backs’ became unintelligible as she wriggled and squirmed and bucked until soon, he was fairly certain he was suffering more than she was.

Breathing hard, he released her wrists and rolled onto his back beside her.  “You’re planning to drive me completely crazy these next few weeks, aren’t you?”

Limbs all akimbo, head dangling off the bed, she heaved between breaths, “Like you wouldn’t believe.”
