Review: Xander's Panda Party by Linda Sue Park

Xander's Panda Party

Author: Linda Sue Park
Illustrator: Matt Phelan
Genre: Children's Picture Book
Release Date: September 3, 2013
Publisher: Clarion Books

Description:

Xander planned a panda party. Yes, a dandy whoop-de-do!But Xander was the only panda. Just one panda at the zoo.

The zoo’s paucity of pandas doesn’t impede Xander’s party planning for long. He decides to invite all the bears. But Koala protests. She’s not a bear—she's a marsupial! Does that mean she can’t come? Xander rethinks his decision to invite only bears, and “Calling all bears” evolves into “Calling all creatures.” The Newbery Medal author Linda Sue Park introduces animal taxonomy in a wonderfully engaging way, and the celebrated artist Matt Phelan’s charming ink and watercolor paintings are the icing on the cake. A read-aloud whoop-de-do!

Xander's Panda Party is a completely adorable children's picture book that tells the story of Xander the Panda who wants to throw a party for all the pandas at the zoo. Soon he realizes that he's the only panda, so decides to invite all the bears to the party too. The Koala Bear tells Xander that she's not really a bear but a marsupial and asks if she'll still be welcome at the party. After Xander thinks for awhile, he changes his invitation to include all the furry creatures at the zoo. Each time a new type of animal comes to Xander wanting to come to the party and he must decide what to do. By the end of the story, Xander decides to invite everyone at the zoo - creatures of all kinds - and even the humans too.

This was a fast and fun children's book that was totally enjoyable. The story speaks of Xander and his problems planning a party at the zoo. The story itself has some bigger words in it, so it's great for older children to read or listen to - that way if they come across a word they don't understand, it can be explained to them. For the smaller children, the story is done in a sing-song way with a definitive rhyme scheme that will keep their attention. It's a great book for young readers who are just starting to learn how to read as well as ones a bit older who want practice and to learn some new words. The illustrations in the book are gorgeous and absolutely adorable. Each page has color illustrations of Xander the Panda and different animals at the zoo. The illustrations coincide with the story line and it's easy to keep along with the story by looking at the pictures. The illustrations themselves are mostly bright and colorful, with the exception of Xander, who is black and white. They are done in watercolor and ink, and make the story that much more exciting and fun for the reader. This is a great book to read to small children or for young readers who are reading on their own.

Publisher: HMH Books for Young Readers

Description:

The New York Times bestseller is now available in a cozy padded board book edition! In this irresistibly charming picture book, many different quiet moments are captured, from the anticipation-heavy “Top of the roller coaster quiet” to the shocked-into-silence “First look at your new hairstyle quiet.” The impossibly sweet bears, rabbits, fish, birds, and iguanas are all rendered in soft pencils and colored digitally, and, as in all of the best picture books, the illustrations propel the story far beyond the words. Soft covers, rounded corners, and sturdy board book pages make this new classic the perfect bedtime companion.

The pictures are colorful and fun with great lines and shading - perhaps done by color pencil. Belonging (Temptation #2)

Author: Karen Ann Hopkins
Genre: YA Contemporary
Release Date: April 30, 2013
Publisher: Harlequin Teen

Description:

I left everything I knew behind.

But it was worth it. He was worth it.

No one thought an ordinary girl like me would last two minutes living with the Amish, not even me. There are a lot more rules and a lot less freedom, and I miss my family and the life I once had. Worst of all, Noah and I aren't even allowed to see each other. Not until I've proven myself.

If I can find a way to make it work, we'll be NOAH & ROSE

together forever.

But not everybody believes this is where I belong.

Belonging is the second book in a young adult contemporary romance series that continues to focus on our main characters - Rose and Noah. They have done the unthinkable - fallen in love. Noah is Amish and forbidden to speak to an English girl, let alone be with one. Rose knows that Noah is the one for her and she won't let anything keep them apart - not even his strict religion. So Rose left everything behind - her friends, her life, everything - to join the Amish community so she and Noah could be together. Now that Rose has transitioned into the Amish way of life, she must prove herself worthy of Noah and his love as well as showing that she belongs among them.

This continued to be an interesting contemporary romance novel that continues right where the first book left off, with Rose joining the Amish community to be with Noah. I continued to enjoy learning more about the Amish culture and their lives along with their strict rules and religious beliefs. As I mentioned in my review of the first book in the series, I live in rural Pennsylvania, so I'm no stranger to the Amish people and their ways, so I was already familiar with most of what the novel spoke of. The characters continued to be well written, especially the main characters of Rose and Noah. I enjoyed watching their relationship grow and overcome the obstacles that were put in their way. Rose continues to be an independent and opinionated girl, but now she has to learn to tamp down her sarcasm and sharp humor if she wants to fit into the Amish community. Noah continued to be the quiet, obedient, and sweet guy who is loyal, loving, and devoted to his faith and his family. I continued to love the romantic aspects of their relationship and I was definitely still rooting for them to be together despite all the obstacles in front of them. The book is told from alternating points of view - Rose and Noah. I liked that the story is told this way because the reader gets and inside view into each of the character's thoughts and feelings along with how they each view the same occurrences. The writing was incredibly well done with a natural flow and an easy but quick pace that had me quickly picking up where the first book left off and jumping right into this book. I enjoyed the ending and I'm definitely intrigued at what the next book will bring. I would definitely recommend this book and the series to fans of YA contemporary romance, especially those who like something original and different from everything else out there.

Cover Reveal: Darkness Watching by Emma L. Adams

Darkness Watching (Darkworld #1)
Author: Emma L. Adams
Genre: New Adult Paranormal/Urban Fantasy
Expected Release Date: September 30, 2013
Publisher: Curiosity Quills Press
Cover Design by the Publisher

Description:

Seventeen-year-old Ashlyn is one interview away from her future when she first sees the demons. She thinks she’s losing her mind, but the truth is far more frightening: she can see into the Darkworld, the home of spirits– and the darkness is staring back.

Desperate to escape the demons, Ash accepts a place at a university in the small town of Blackstone, in the middle of nowhere – little knowing that it isn’t coincidence that led her there but the pull of the Venantium, the sorcerers who maintain the barrier keeping demons from crossing from the Darkworld into our own world.

All-night parties, new friendships and a life without rules or limits are all part of the package of student life – but demons still stalk Ash, and their interest in her has attracted the attention of every sorcerer in the area. Ash is soon caught between her new life and a group of other students with a connection to the Darkworld, who could offer the answers she’s looking for. The demons want something from her,  and someone is determined to kill her before she can find out what it is.

In a world where darkness lurks beneath the surface, not everyone is what they appear to be..
Emma spent her childhood creating imaginary worlds to compensate for a disappointingly average reality, so it was probably inevitable that she ended up writing fantasy and paranormal for young adults. She was born in Birmingham, UK, which she fled at the first opportunity to study English Literature at Lancaster University. In her three years at Lancaster, she hiked up mountains, skydived in Australia, and endured a traumatic episode involving a swarm of bees in the Costa Rican jungle. She also wrote various novels and short stories. These included her first publication, a rather bleak dystopian piece, and a disturbing story about a homicidal duck (which she hopes will never see the light of day).

Now a reluctant graduate, she can usually be found in front of her writing desk, creating weird and wonderful alternative worlds. Her debut novel The Puppet Spell, published in 2013 by Rowanvale Books, is a fantasy tale for young adults and the young at heart, inspired by her lifelong love of the fantastical, mythology, and video games. Emma also writes supernatural fantasy novels for older teens and adults. Her next book,Darkness Watching, is the first in the upper-YA/New Adult Darkworld series, and will be published in September 2013 by Curiosity Quills Press.

When fifteen-year-old Jordan Lake's discovery of an ancient bracelet in her grandmother's house unleashes the curse of Hathor, Jordan must vanquish this Egyptian love goddess before her meddling in McKnight High School's social scene destroys the school and Jordan's chance for a date to the big dance.

Praise for NO MORE GODDESSES:

“Kim Baccellia has mixed Egyptian mythology and romantic elements into a delicious fizzy cocktail that will leave the reader shaken and stirred! Romance and adventure are around every corner, but in the end, it's friendship that really matters.” --Joyce Sweeney, author of Players, Headlock, and Free Fall
No More Goddesses is a young adult fantasy novel that follows main character Jordan Lake as she makes her way through high school, secretly crushing on one of the most popular boys at school. Her normal life takes a turn for the worse when she discovers an ancient bracelet in her grandmother's attic. A bracelet that just happens to release the curse of Hathor. Now Jordan has to find a way to vanquish the goddess before she wreaks havoc on McKnight High School's students, destroys the school, and any shot Jordan had at getting a date to the dance with the guy of her dreams.

This was an interesting story with a unique plot. It's aimed for younger teen readers and the writing style shows this. The writing was well done, although at times it seemed as though the story was campy and a bit far fetched. I found that I couldn't fully immerse myself in the story or connect with any of the characters, which had a definite impact on my experience with the book. The characters were fun, but almost all of them seemed stereotypical and cliched. They didn't seem to have any sort of depth to them and nothing really changed that throughout the book. The story was intriguing and I enjoyed learning about the Egyptian mythology that was woven into the book. That brought a new level of interest to the somewhat lacking main plot. Overall, this book wasn't for me, but it would appeal to younger YA readers who enjoy mythology and fantasy novels.

When writing No More Goddesses, Kim Baccellia watched almost all of Audrey Hepburn’s movies and learned to love this famous icon. She went on to watch and read all she could on Audrey. She has always had a secret desire to travel to Egypt and visit the pyramids. The closest she’s come to fulfilling this dream are her younger sister Autumn and Egyptian-national brother-in-law Eihab, who were kind enough to share some things with her, including a Hathor sistrum and some incense.

Kim’s other works include Crossed Out, a YA paranormal, and a YA multicultural urban fantasy, Earrings of Ixtumea.

A member of YALITCHAT and RWA, Kim is writing book two in the Goddesses series. She’s also revising a New Adult multicultural suspense adventure novel. She lives in Southern California with her husband, son, and two parrots.

Chapter One
Virgin Territory

Gentle fingertips grazed the edge of her jaw, trailing down her neck to her collarbone. His citrine gaze stared deeply into her eyes, and her body heated at his tender touch.

“You’re okay, yeah?” Thaene asked, his voice hoarse from their lovemaking.

Am I okay? She hardly knew. Though she had nothing to compare it to, this feeling was more than giving her virginity to him. Quinn felt like something bigger inside had stirred to life, wanting to escape.

“You know I love you. I’m sorry if it hurt.” He kissed her again, his lips caressing hers, as if he could take the ache away.

“Say something, Quinn. Please.”

“I love you, Thaene.” She pressed herself into him, passionately returning his affection. As their kiss continued, Quinn wondered if he wanted more. She also wondered if she had more to give.

“I want us together, always. Do you want that, Quinn?” Thaene’s eyes danced with a mixture of emotions—love, passion, possessiveness, and something else she couldn’t name.

“We can have forever. You want that, don’t you?” Thaene asked.

“Yes,” Quinn answered breathlessly, before realizing what she’d agreed to. She smiled, finding his need for her exciting.

“Forever is a long time. But I could do it with you.”

Thaene smiled back. Happiness lit his face. He looked like he’d just won a major prize—he looked triumphant.

“Being with you on your twenty-second birthday was very special to me. You’ve given me such a precious gift.”

“I love you. I can’t imagine my first time with anyone else.”

Besides, my gift of Sight showed you to me, over and over. How could I not give myself to you?

Her gift had shown her something else as well. Since she didn’t understand it, Quinn ignored it. She’d followed her heart where Thaene was concerned. Not even her mother’s dislike—or in spite of it— changed her mind. Following your heart always led you down the right path.

Thaene lightly brushed her hair from her face, then he rested his forehead on hers.

“There’s something else I’d like you to give me. Will you do that? Give me what I desire the most?”

The longing in his voice made Quinn squirm underneath him. Right now, she’d give him anything.

“It’s the most precious gift of all. One I’ll cherish forever.”

Oh my God. He wants to marry me.

“Yes,” Quinn said, drawing in a breath. “I’ll give you anything.”

“Good.” Thaene nuzzled her neck. “I want you to show me your Magyk.”

“What?” Quinn blinked at him, wondering if she’d heard him right.

“If you want us to have forever, you must show me your Magyk.”
