2013 End of Year Book Survey

Welcome to my End of the Year Book Survey for 2013! The awesome Jamie at Perpetual Page Turners has been doing this survey for 4 years now and I love participating! It's a wonderful way to look back and remember the amazing books we've read this past year and what we're looking forward to in 2014. So, without further ado, I present my answers to the survey!

1. Best Book You Read In 2013? (If you have to cheat — you can break it down by genre if you want or 2013 release vs. backlist)

Contemporary - The Edge of Never by J.A. Redmerski

Twinmaker by Sean Williams

 3. Most surprising (in a good way!) book of 2013?

I had a lot of titles surprise me this past year! I don't think I can narrow it down to just one, so here are some that really surprised me in a great way: The Naturals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes; The In-Between by Barbara Stewart; When the World Was Flat (And We Were in Love) by Ingrid Jonach; The Collector & The Liberator by Victoria Scott; The Summer I Became a Nerd by Leah Rae Miller; The S-Word by Chelsea Pitcher

 6. Favorite new author you discovered in 2013?

A.G. Howard (am I sounding like a broken record yet?)

7. Best book that was out of your comfort zone or was a new genre for you?

Splintered by A.G. Howard!

15. Favorite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2013?

“Tearing down the rest of the world won't make you happy. Look inside yourself. Because finding who you were meant to be? What you were put into this world to do? That's what fills the emptiness. It's the only things that can.”
A.G. Howard, Splintered

27. Book You Read in 2013 That You Think Got Overlooked This Year Or When It Came Out?

When the World Was Flat (And We Were in Love) by Ingrid Jonach (Go read it if you haven't!!)

My 2013 in one title:

After answering all of the questions above about the books we've read and loved in 2013, it's now completely obvious to me (and you as well, I'm sure) that the entirety of the last year can be summed up by one title: Splintered. I may be obsessed. Just a tad.

Unhinged by A.G. Howard

3. 2014 Debut You Are Most Anticipating?

The Violet Eden Chapters by Jessica Shirvington

5. One Thing You Hope To Accomplish Or Do In Your Reading/Blogging In 2014?

The Grimm Diaries Prequels 1-6 recently made the Top 100 Kids & Teens Kindle Books of 2013 on Amazon, along with prequels 7-10, and Cameron Jace's Snow White Sorrow

From Blood Apples:

“When Snow White stabbed herself, her blood spattered all over the apples in the Avalon Tree, staining the gold with red. Since you both surpassed all expected kinds of Adage by killing yourself to be with one another, I was moved – like all the gods were moved – by your story, and I decided to honor your love by turning the apples that poisoned you red and sweet forever.”
I was speechless again. My love for Snow White moved the gods and they changed the color of a fruit?
“But that means that catching Death is going to be harder now,” I said.
“Let it be,” Pomona waved her wings. “Death is eventual, a nature’s call, and it happens everyday. Adage, true love, isn’t, and it needs human strength to live with its enchanting, yet sorrowful consequences. It deserves to be appreciated, for it’s not easy, and needs human will, strength, and heart. It doesn’t matter how many people die in the world, as long as there are the few who know how to love and live. The power of love, however little, is enough to balance all the death around us.”
I walked away that day, wanting to tell everyone how Snow White and I had changed the world. With every step farther, I was leaving my monster girl forever behind. I picked a blood red apple on the way, and took a bite. I closed my eyes, feeling the taste on my lips. It was the taste of Snow White’s lips, and it will be forever tasted by the rest of the world without them knowing it. Because of me and Snow White, no one will ever be poisoned by apples again.
Little did I know that Snow White wasn’t dead. Pomona twisted the truth and persuaded me that Snow was dead to protect me from her, always and forever. Snow White was Immortal, and I think she woke up minutes after I left, asking about me. It’s easy to imagine the kind of lies they told her. Maybe they told her I was dead too.
I spent the rest of my life trying to find her again, but all in vain. All I know is that Pomona didn’t lie about the fruits, for all apples are still blood red in this world. And every time I take a bite, I remember they are the color of Death.
Things you might want to know:

Cameron writes books that he can't find elsewhere, basically to amuse himself. Everything Cameron does is for fun, so don't take him seriously. Never call him a writer. He hates that. He prefers the word: Storyteller, or the boy next door who claims he can tell stories.

If you like his books, horaaaay! He loves ya too. If ya don't, hoooray! Now we know in advance that this relationship isn't going to work.

Although his books are ordinary on the surface, they hold many secrets that he might reveal one day. What matters the most to him are characters struggling to find their identities and place in the world.

Things you don't need to know:

He celebrates his birthday twice a year, the day he was born and Friday the 13th. He wants to live in a bubble house. He is a damn good guitar player. He is damn good architecture college drop out. He likes boats, beaches, bears, beards, bananas, bars, barfights, beans, bikes, bones, butter, babes, bakery, blizzards, and pirates (he thought it was spelled Birates when he was a kid.)

And honestly, writing in third person sucks! It's so fake.

Book Blitz + Giveaway: The Double Life of Incorporate Things by Leanna Renee Hieber

The Double Life of Incorporate Things (Magic Most Foul #3)
Author: Leanna Renee Hieber

Genre: YA Paranormal/Fantasy
Release Date: November 29, 2013

Buy Links: Amazon / Barnes and Noble

Description:

Just when we think our nightmares are over, the Society has invented a new horror. Around every corner a shadow; behind every whisper a demon. If we don't end what the devils began, we will all die haunted...

The finale in the acclaimed Magic Most Foul trilogy, the trauma and the terror of the Master's Society has only escalated for the dashing Lord Denbury and brave, feisty Miss Natalie Stewart. A new terror has been unleashed in Manhattan. Together they, with their stalwart friends and unlikely heroes, take the fight directly to the Denbury estate, where fresh evils have awakened. But are they prepared for all the sacrifices that shall be asked of them? With their very lives and the sanctity of their mortal souls at stake, Natalie and Jonathon are past the point of no return...

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18816998-the-double-life-of-incorporate-things?ac=1
I set the paper down slowly enough to see the thin edges shake as the full, personal impact of the newspaper article hit me.

"Natalie, what is it?" Jonathon asked, staring at me with those eviscerating blue eyes of his. I opened my mouth but no sound came out. Damn my unpredictable, inconstant voice.

For the past many months now, I'd been pummeled by one strange event after another, pulled into the center of a paranormal whirlpool. At least in this case, we had an inkling, some sense of the next onslaught. Still, a foreshadow was hardly a comfort. We couldn't have guessed the scope.

Now it wasn't just myself or Jonathon Whitby, Lord Denbury in danger, with the occasional collateral victim. Now it was a crowd. I knew the Association. I adored them. They weren't hooligans or criminals, they were gentle souls, artistic and individual. Overdramatic, yes, but a threat? Hardly. This maligning was the work of The Master's Society, turning lambs into lions in ungodly experiments, leaving them for fodder in sensational, indelicate journalism. It could only get worse. Exponentially worse.

"It's begun," I finally managed to reply quietly, sliding the paper across the lacquered console table behind the sofa toward Jonathon's reach. "Another phase. They've gone after the Association. And the papers will vilify those poor dears, every last one of them. Jonathon, the demons won't give up..."

This currently out-of-print series will reissue in new, revised editions in 2014 from Tor/Macmillan. DARKER STILL: A Novel of Magic Most Foul, begins a Gothic paranormal saga set in 1880 New York City, named an INDIE NEXT title; a recommended buy by the American Book Association and a Scholastic book fairs "Highly Recommended" title. The sequel, THE TWISTED TRAGEDY OF MISS NATALIE STEWART released to acclaim and in the manner of the Victorians she writes about she serialized nearly all of the finale, THE DOUBLE LIFE OF INCORPORATE THINGS, on her blog, she and her editorial team were often just a few chapters ahead of her audience. Review: The Lost Prince by Selden Edwards

The Lost Prince

Author: Selden Edwards
Genre: Historical Fiction/Science Fiction
Release Date: June 25, 2013 (paperback edition)
Publisher: Plume
Source: Paperback copy from the publisher

Description:

The Lost Prince can stand independently of The Little Book … but why deprive yourself of the pleasures of reading both?” —Booklist

Recently returned from fin de siècle Vienna, where she tragically lost the first great love of her life, Eleanor Burden settles into her expected place in Boston society, marries a suitable husband, and waits for life to come to her. Eleanor’s story is not unlike that of the other young women she grew up with in 1890’s Boston, except for one difference: Eleanor believes herself to have advance knowledge of every major historical event to come in her lifetime. But soon Eleanor’s script of events begins to unravel, and she must find the courage of her deepest convictions, discover the difference between predetermination and free will, find faith in her own sanity, and decide whether she will allow history to unfold come what may — or use her extraordinary gifts to bend history and deliver the life she is meant to have.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16171270-the-lost-prince

The Lost Prince is an imaginative and thought provoking novel that tells the story of Eleanor Burden as she returns to her rightful place in Boston's high society, takes a husband, and waits for life to happen. She isn't that different from most other women of her time, except that Eleanor believes she has knowledge of every major historical event that will happen during her lifetime. How does one begin to explain this to others without sounding insane? As Eleanor's predictions start going awry, she is forced to face the forces of free will and predetermination, as well as believing in herself and the knowledge she possesses. The only question Eleanor must  finally ask herself is if she will sit back and let history play out or will she use her gifts to change history?

This was an incredible novel - unlike anything I've read before. There's another book before this one, The Little Book, but I was able to read this one without having read the first. The characters are realistic - especially Eleanor - who has her own strong personality along with flaws, strengths, and morals. I truly enjoyed getting to know Eleanor throughout the book - as a person as well as learning more about her amazing gifts. The setting was perfect for the novel and is described with such intricate details and vivid descriptions that I felt as though I was transported back into that era. The plot flowed effortlessly and had me hooked from the first page - and it didn't let up until the last sentence. It's definitely a book that will leave you thinking about a variety of issues - fate, predetermination, morals, free will, among others - long after you've finished. I don't do spoilers in my reviews, so it's hard to talk about much more of the plot without giving away anything. Suffice it to say that this is one of the most intriguing and extraordinary novels I've ever read, and one that I highly recommend to fans of all genres - especially historical fiction, science fiction, and fans of time travel and fantasy.

*A big thanks to the great people at Plume for sending me a copy for review!*
