Description:

When Stella Jo Chandler gets an offer to work at the Second Chance Ranch celebrity rehab facility right after graduating from Texas A&M, she’s tempted to turn it down. She wants to help real people with real problems, not spoiled celebrities going on vacation for publicity. But growing up on her family’s ranch left her with a love of horses that draws her to the opportunity. How bad can babysitting a bunch of strung out celebrities be?

What she didn’t count on was being roped into a tangled mess with infamous rocker and three-time rehab drop out Van Ransom on her first day. And she sure didn’t expect to feel the overwhelming attraction that pulls her to the man who has more issues than she can count on both hands. Like the hotel rooms and tour buses he’s famous for trashing, the havoc he could wreak on Stella’s heart would be irreparable.

Van isn’t at Second Chance for publicity or because he’s suffering from “exhaustion”. He’s on the brink of destruction, and he needs the kind of help Stella isn’t sure she can give. But without her, he'll lose everything. Because he’s on his last second chance.

VAN RANSOM

“Damn you taste good, cowgirl,” he told her once she’d ridden out the remaining violent waves of ecstasy. “Here, taste.” Ignoring her wide eyes, he pressed his mouth to hers and lashed his tongue inside. He knew the sugared honey that was her arousal flared her desire because she clamped her legs around him and gripped his biceps hard enough to hurt. The way she dug her fingers in, as if she were holding onto him for dear life, made him ache to be inside her.
“Made up your mind yet?”
She pulled back from their kiss, still panting enough to make his entire life. “About?”
“Whether or not you believe the rumors. About me. Be honest.”
An impish grin lifted her lips. “Well, I can say with absolute certainty that you are, in fact, a madman.”
“That’s what they tell me, sweetheart.” He brushed his lips softly against hers to show her that, even as crazed as he was, madman or not, he could be gentle too—if that’s what she needed.
“Van…I need you,” she breathed. “Soon.”
The plea soothed every open wound he’d nursed for as long as he could remember. She needed him. And unlike the last woman who’d needed him, the one he’d failed miserably, he would be what Stella Jo Chandler needed. He would keep this one safe.
“You’ll have me. Soon. We’ll just have to be careful. I don’t want to cost you your job, cowgirl.”
She nodded. His eyes met hers and he saw it. She trusted him completely.
He would be worthy of that trust. Of her.
Or so help him, he’d cut out his own damn heart.

About Book #1:

Secrets…

They weigh you down. I’ve kept a secret all my life. It’s my mother’s secret, too. I inherited it from her along with a unique ability that only we possess. She’s gone now, another victim of addiction. If her death isn’t enough to bring me to my knees, her betrayal flays me to the bone. Because the secret my mother and I have been keeping is just one of many she’d kept. She never told me I have an older brother. And now he’s here, eager to be my guardian.

There is no one else. So I move across the country to live with this stranger, my brother. But experience has taught me that most situations are temporary and forming attachments only leads to hurt in the end. That’s why I’m determined to keep to myself in this new place, struggling to seem aloof while I’m quietly breaking apart.

Then I meet Lucas…

His magnetism is hard to resist, and most girls at school aren’t resisting. I don’t fall so easily though, especially not for guys who use their good looks as a weapon. From the start, our interactions are tense and volatile. I know it’s because I’m denying the unwelcome desire that grips me when he’s near. I think he feels it, too. He looks at me with an intensity that threatens to unhinge my resolve. Soon he’s trying to break through the walls that past hurts have built.

But I’m not what I appear to be, and it wouldn’t be fair to get involved with him. At least that’s what I tell myself. Until a terrible act of violence reveals that Lucas has a secret, too. It’s a secret that links us together and ties us to an evil history I could never have imagined.

Description:

Divided by day and night and on the run from authorities, star-crossed young lovers unearth a sinister conspiracy in this compelling romantic thriller.

Seventeen-year-old Soleil Le Coeur is a Smudge—a night dweller prohibited by law from going out during the day. When she fakes an injury in order to get access to and kidnap her newborn niece—a day dweller, or Ray—she sets in motion a fast-paced adventure that will bring her into conflict with the powerful lawmakers who order her world, and draw her together with the boy she was destined to fall in love with, but who is also a Ray.

Set in a vivid alternate reality and peopled with complex, deeply human characters on both sides of the day-night divide, Plus One is a brilliantly imagined drama of individual liberty and civil rights, and a fast-paced romantic adventure story.

Plus One is a highly original and inventive novel that crosses genre boundaries and tackles serious topics all while taking the reader on a thrilling adventure. The story follows two people from opposites sides of the tracks - or, more literally, from different sides of the day. There's something about star-crossed lovers that always gets me - most likely the sheer romance of it all, their love being the most important thing to them, etc. The characters in this book are your typical teens who aren't supposed to even meet one another, let alone fall in love. The world that the author created was incredibly detailed and had lots of vivid imagery so I easily immersed myself into the story and the dystopian surroundings. I loved learning all about the Smudges and the Rays - what made people fall into each category, what their lives were like, their surroundings and rules. I think it gave the book an original plot and an interest take on a dystopian setting - it's unlike any other book in the genre I've read. The characters were well rounded with distinct personalities and obvious strengths and flaws. The writing was conversational, so I felt like I immediately connected with Soleil - as we get to read her thoughts and emotions while everything is going on. The writing was very well done with fantastic world building and a gripping plot that had me eagerly reading to see what was going to happen next. The book itself mixes a ton of different genres together - from science fiction and dystopia to action and adventure and even romance - there's a bit of something in this book for fans of all types of fiction. I really loved this book and I'm bummed that it's not going to be a series - I would definitely devour the other books! Overall, I found this to be an enchanting and thrilling novel and I highly recommend it to fans of several genres, especially those who love YA science fiction, dystopia, and romance.

Chantress Alchemy (Chantress Trilogy #2)
Author: Amy Butler Greenfield
Release Day: May 6, 2014
Publisher: Margaret K McElderry Books
352 pages

Synopsis:
Since defeating Lord Scargrave with her music, Lucy, the last Chantress, has lived by the sea, mastering the intricacies of Wild Magic. But now her quiet life is about to end: the wheat crop has failed, the people are rebelling, and Lucy is called urgently back to King Henry IX’s court. There she finds the Inner Council planning to save England by making gold through alchemy. But the golden crucible — the critical element in the alchemical process — has been stolen, its guards murdered. Lucy is charged with finding the traitor behind the attack.
Meanwhile, enemies old and new are gathering. Scargrave's brutal Chantress-hunter has become King Henry's closest advisor. Lucy’s beloved Nat has fallen out of favor and is shunned by his colleagues; their romance means trouble for both of them. Worst of all, something goes wrong with Lucy’s magic. The palace is a labyrinth, and there’s a monster at its heart — a monster who may have the power to defeat Lucy once and for all.
Amy Butler Greenfield returns to the beguiling world of Chantress for a suspenseful tale of courtly intrigue, music, and magic in Chantress Alchemy.

Chantress Alchemy is the second installment in the Chantress Trilogy - a young adult fantasy that follows Lucy, the last Chantress in the world, as she tries to learn more about her magic and how to harness it. Things have been quiet since Lucy helped save the kingdom and restored the rightful king - King Henry - to the throne. Suddenly, Lucy is called back to court because the crops have failed, the people are starting to rebel, and a key part of the Council's one shot at fixing everything has been stolen. Lucy learns that a lot has happened in the months since she left and the entire country is in an uproar. The King's Inner Council has decided to turn to alchemy to fix the problem of money  - by creating the fabled Philosopher's Stone. Lucy is charged with the task of finding the missing crucible and who stole it, but soon it's clear that things won't be that easy as more deception is uncovered, the King's life is put in danger, and Lucy's magic disappears. Will she be able to find the person responsible before it's too late? Will she be able to regain her magic or is it gone for good this time?
I absolutely love all fiction that has to do with magic and I adored the first book in this trilogy. This installment picks up a few months after the events of the first book. I found myself immediately pulled back into Lucy's life and her world - an alternative version of 17th century England. I loved learning more about the lore behind the Chantresses - I think it made the story deeper as a whole along with Lucy's character discovering more about herself and those before her. She never had much information about her magic and she learns a lot in this book that makes her question things she never thought possible. Another thing I really loved in this book was the alchemy aspect. Alchemy is incredibly fascinating, in my opinion, and I loved the way the author wove it into the story alongside the Chantress magic and the royal court. There were lots of details about alchemy in the book, which I loved and  brought the story to a whole new level. There are new characters introduced in the book, along with reunions with old friends and love interests. Lucy's character experienced a lot of character growth in the book on several levels - maturity, confidence, inner strength, love, and lots more. I enjoyed watching her character develop as well as the relationships between the other characters. The bit of the book that's a mystery - who stole the crucible and is behind everything - took a bunch of twists and turns. It had me guessing the entire time until we finally found out who the "bad guy" is - and I couldn't believe it. Overall, this was a great second book in an enchanting trilogy, and I'm already eagerly awaiting the final book to see what's going to happen. There's only one part that I didn't like - the ending - and those of you who have read it know why. I'm really hoping things will take a different turn in the final book. Highly recommended for fans of magical fiction and fantasies!
