Book Blitz + Giveaway: Athena's Ashes by Jamie Grey

Athena's Ashes (Star Thief Chronicles #2)
Author: Jamie Grey
Genre: New Adult Science Fiction/Romance
Release Date: August 26, 2014

Description:

It’s Renna’s biggest job yet – convincing MYTH leadership that she’s put away her lock picks and is ready to save the galaxy, despite the dangerous implant in her brain. But with the Athena on the run, she’s working solo and facing her most ruthless enemy, the traitor Pallas, who’ll go to any lengths to destroy the MYTH organization. Including framing Renna for a devastating assault on MYTH HQ that leaves their defenses crippled and hundreds dead.

Now that MYTH believes she’s a dangerous double-agent, Renna escapes their firing squad before they put more holes in her than a pair of fishnet stockings. But the ticking time-bomb in her head is the one thing Pallas needs to complete his master plan and he’s not about to let her get away. Even worse, he’s discovered the only thing that will bring Renna to her knees – threatening Captain Nick Finn.

Out of time and options, Renna’s got one shot to take down the traitor before he annihilates everything she loves, even though winning this battle may cost her everything.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22049214-athena-s-ashes?ac=1
Renna leaned back in her chair and tilted her head to study Finn. He glanced away and tugged at his collar as he leaned against the table.
“Care to tell me what that was all about?” she asked.
“It was just a discussion Viktis and I had. I didn’t know Myka overheard us.”
“And what did you two gentlemen—” she emphasized the word slightly, “—decide about my future?”
Finn cleared his throat. “Nothing, really. I assured Viktis you were done with mercenary work and wouldn’t be interested in any other contracts. That you had given up that sort of thing. That MYTH could trust you.”
“You assured him, huh?” She raised an eyebrow. “And how did you know that?”
Finn tugged at his collar again. “I thought… since you were working for MYTH…”
“That I’d give up the only job I’ve ever been good at?”
“I…”
“Save it, Finn.” She shook her head. “Neither you or Viktis know anything about my future plans. And to be honest, right now my only plan is surviving this mess. After I know I’m not going to die, I’ll think about what comes next.”
She’d spent most of her life planning what would come next—an early retirement on a vacation world. But she knew no matter what happened, that could never work for her now. If she was really honest with herself, she was hardly the type to settle down. Either in life or relationships. Which made her current situation all the more confusing. Part of her wanted to see what happened with Finn. Part of her wanted to run the moment this was over. She wasn’t sure which part would win at the moment.
Finn’s voice deepened, and he leaned forward to rest his hands on the table across from her, his gaze at her eye level. “I’ve been thinking about what comes next since we went on the run.” He looked like he wanted to devour her for lunch.
Renna swallowed.
“I hate that you left as we were getting to know each other again. I missed you, Renna.” He smiled wolfishly. “Obviously you missed me, too, if you took control of the Athena to get us back here.”
Heat blossomed in her face. “That had nothing to do with you,” she protested, getting to her feet. “I was unconscious. I didn’t even know what I was doing.”
Finn circled the table, and Renna backed away from him until she hit the wall. The expression on his face made heat pool between her legs and her mouth go dry. He stopped, just far enough away that he wasn’t touching her but close enough she could feel the heat from his body.
His blue eyes bore into hers. “Look at that. The Star Thief’s afraid,” he said softly.
She shook her head, her tongue darting out to lick her suddenly dry lips. Finn’s gaze dropped to watch. Once upon a time, she would have used that to her advantage, to seduce him and turn the tables. To take control of the situation. What the hell had happened to her?
She inhaled Finn’s scent—citrus and sandalwood. Damn him, he was right. She had missed him. But with everything going on now, she couldn’t afford to let him distract her. She couldn’t think about the future. There was only the present.
Damn, she wanted him, though. Now. On the freaking mess hall table.
Finn’s gaze trapped hers as he caressed her jaw with one of his long fingers, letting it drift lower down her neck to brush butterfly-light against her collarbone.
Renna’s skin tingled with fear and desire and lust until she could barely see straight.
And then he lowered his lips to hers. Just a soft brush of skin at first, but heat zapped through her and she sucked in a breath.
Finn took that as an invitation, smiling before he kissed her again softly. The feel of his mouth against hers sent a blaze of fire through her. Renna curled her hands into his arms, and he jerked her to him, deepening the kiss. He forced her mouth open, stroking her tongue, teasing her until she moaned.
“Finn,” she whispered, pressing herself against him, her fears forgotten for the moment. His hands tangled in her hair, and he kissed her until she was dizzy, until her knees trembled—along with other, more intimate parts of her.
He pulled away slightly to press kisses to her jaw, sliding his tongue against the sensitive skin beneath her ear. They were tangled in each other, his hard strength holding her against the wall. And she felt an even harder part of him pressed against her.
Another surge of heat shot through her. Gods, she’d missed him. She didn’t care what it meant at that moment. “I want you.”
“I know.”

Kid Lit Authors Raise Money for CCHS‏

Hey everyone! I wanted to do a spotlight post on this fundraiser that Lydia Kang - and some other great authors - have started to raise money for CCHS research. Read on for more information on the disease, the fundraiser, and how you can help!

A Literary Fundraiser to Benefit Rare Respiratory Disorder
Authors around the country have come together to raise money for Congenital Central Hypoventilation Syndrome (CCHS), a rare, life-threatening disorder that affects breathing. The initiative is spearheaded by author and physician, Lydia Kang, whose debut novel, CONTROL, features a protagonist with CCHS.

"When I wrote CONTROL, I wanted to create a heroine who faced struggles that readers don't always get to see,” says Kang. “After the book released, I wanted to bring a focus back to the non-fictional heroes--the children with CCHS and the people who champion them."

The funds raised will go to the Center of Autonomic Medicine in Pediatrics, or CAMP, a program run through Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. There, With sophisticated diagnostic testing and pioneering research, CAMP provides individualized services for these patients referred from 50 different countries and conducts research aimed to maximize their quality of life.

Since this disease primarily affects children, it’s fitting that most of the authors participating in the fundraiser write for children, tweens and teens. Donors will receive thank you gifts ranging from bookmarks and stickers, to three and five book bundles, to a character name in an upcoming book from one of the participating authors. Everyone who donates $50 or more will be invited to participate in a virtual VIP party with the participating authors.

The group hopes to raise $5000 or more and the fundraiser runs through September 20, 2014.

"I've been so grateful for the authors who have donated so selflessly,” says Kang. “The CCHS community needs research dollars, so every effort to raise funds and awareness is a huge help."

To find out more about the disease, the fundraiser, and how you can help - please go to this link: https://fundrazr.com/campaigns/5q3c0.

Iron Pendulum (The Periodic Series #2)
Author: Megan Curd
Genre: YA Steampunk Fantasy
Release Date: August 28, 2014

Description:
Six months ago, Avery thought the world ended outside Dome Four. Thought she was one of the few of her kind. Thought the war that brought the human race to the brink of extinction was over.

But six months can change everything.

After fighting to escape a tyranny she didn't even know existed, Avery has had to come to grips with all the secrets she's uncovered. But more secrets continue to come to light, revealing how little of her world she truly knew. When evidence starts to show that Dome Four might be under siege, Avery knows what she must do.

Returning to the dome she longed to escape is a challenge for Avery, but now she knows there’s corruption lurking in the shadows. A massive steam shortage leaves half the dome without power, and people are falling ill. Dying.

And they’re blaming Avery.

Six months can change everything. One more month could kill everyone. The clock is ticking.

Her huff echoed in our headsets, and I was glad she couldn’t see my smile.
“Avery, don’t act like I don’t know you’re smiling behind that mask.”
I put my hands up in submission. Alice knew everything about me.
Jaxon took the map. “Let’s go left.” He turned and walked away like he expected us to follow. Which we did.
I was thankful for the mask, because it dulled the stench of refuse floating along the shallow water in the tunnel. Rats scurried along the waterline, our lights sending them into a frenzy. Each step caused the water to slosh and echo through the tunnel, giving our position away.
“We should try to stay out of the water,” I said into the mic, hoping someone would agree with me before Jaxon could argue.
No dice.
Jaxon touched his earpiece and spoke. “Why? Are you afraid of your toes pruning in the water?”
“It’s not that.”
“Contrary to legend, there are no alligators in the sewer.”
“That you know of,” Alice quipped.
Deep down, Alice liked Jaxon. She just enjoyed making him squirm. And the truth was, I enjoyed watching it happen.
“That I know of.” Jaxon admitted. “But I will take one for the team and wrestle the beast into submission if it floats down our tunnel. Then I expect minstrels to sing of my heroics in future years. You can be the minstrel, Alice. I bet you’d look great with a lyre and kilt-y getup.”
Alice shook her head. “If anyone would look good in a skirt, it’s you, chicken legs.”
“Oh, please, you know you wish you could look as good as me in a skirt. Have you seen your calves?”
Everyone laughed and Alice huffed. Jaxon took the lead and sloshed through the water, making more of a ruckus than necessary.
But then he went still. As still as a dog that had caught a scent on a hunt.
Alice’s whisper came through the earpiece. “Jax, what did you hear?”
I watched as the muscles in Jaxon’s back tensed and his shoulders squared. I heard the minor intake of breath and wondered if everyone else knew what it meant.
He was afraid.
Iron Pendulum is the second book in a fantastic young adult steampunk fantasy series. It continues where the first book left off - following our heroine, Avery, as she tries to pick up the pieces of her life after the war that destroyed almost everything. Now living outside the Domes - away from the awful tyranny she hadn't know existed until recently - Avery and her friends are determined to stop Xander and his horrific experiments at any cost. It just so happens that this time the cost is steep - Avery must go back inside her old home of Dome Four to determine if Xander is hiding out there to continue his evil plans. Going back home is hard for Avery - especially when she sees the destruction that's ravaged the place, along with how incredibly sick all the people are. There's a huge steam shortage in the dome and it's causing chaos - and death. For some reason, everyone is blaming Avery for the lack of steam. Things are getting worse and time is running out for the dome and its residents. Avery has to figure out what's happening and stop it before it's too late.

Unlike most series, this second book was just as phenomenal as the first. Most of the time a series will start off strong and then get progressively worse with each following installment. This is definitely not the case here. Every part of the book - from the characters and the setting to the plot and the writing style - was fantastic. Avery, our heroine of the story, continues to be a great main character. She's strong, smart, caring, and devoted to those she loves. She also has some awesome powers to manipulate the elements that she's still learning how to control. She's not perfect though - she has her fears, doubts, and flaws just like everyone else - which I thought made her all the more realistic and easy to identify with. Avery's character does some major growing in this book - she becomes more independent, mature, and determined to fight for what's right no matter what. The rest of the characters are well written with their own personalities and quirks. I especially liked watching Avery and Jaxon as their relationship grew.

The setting was amazing, and I love how the author continued to describe it. With all the details and vivid imagery, it felt like I was there alongside the characters throughout the book. From the very first paragraphs I found that I could immerse myself back into the storyline like I had never left. The plot continues to be full of action, adventure, suspense, and tons of twists and turns. There were definitely some parts that left me puzzled and some that came out of nowhere and hit me like a ton of bricks. The story is fast paced and flows so easily that I didn't stop reading once I started. With the ease of the writing, the quick pace, and the fascinating story line - this is definitely a book (and series) that fans of the genre will not want to miss. Very highly recommended for fans of steampunk, fantasy, dystopias, and science fiction.

Book Blitz + Giveaway: Pieces of Me by Kira Adams

Pieces of Me (Foundation #1)
Author: Kira Adams
Release Date: August 11, 2014

Summary from Goodreads:

For sixteen year old Peyton Lane, life has never been easy. She’s not popular, overweight, and oh yeah, her sister is embarrassed of her. But over the course of a tumultuous year, everything changes for Peyton.

Suddenly all eyes are on her and it’s not because she’s fat. From a pair of handsome twins to a couple of dangerously sexy rockers, Peyton will have to find out who she can trust with her heart. From the ups and downs to the twists and turns—this is Peyton’s story of finding one’s voice and growing into your own.

This is a coming of age romance that involves realistic situations and raw emotions. This is Pieces of Me.

We were seated on the couch in his hotel, close enough to touch, but far enough away to be appropriate in any situation. I was wiping away tears in the corner of my eyes from laughing so hard at something Colton had said, when he changed everything. “Do you have any idea how beautiful you are?” he asked out of nowhere, tucking a stray piece of hair behind my ear.

I was suddenly aware I was shaking, uncontrollably. It was an uncomfortable sight, so I got up suddenly and retreated to an adjacent wall, which I leaned upon. I couldn’t even look at him. No one had ever called me beautiful before; it had to be too good to be true. He obviously felt the awkward tension and didn’t waste any time addressing it. “Hey, are you okay?” he asked, as he rose and started slowly coming towards me.

My heart was beating faster and harder with each step he took forward. I couldn’t remember how to breathe. I was pretty sure I was going to faint, but was surprised to see I was still alert when he finally made his way to me. “Hey.” He touched my cheek softly, “What’s wrong?”

I couldn’t look him in the eyes with such an embarrassing confession, so I did my best to look away. “No one has told me that before.”

“What? That you’re beautiful?” Suddenly something seemed to click for him. I saw pain in his eyes, the realization finally making its appearance. “You are beautiful, Peyton.” He looked down into my eyes for a long time, willing me to believe him, willing me to see what he saw.

Krista Pakseresht has always been a dreamer. From the first time she opened her eyes. Creating worlds through words is one thing she is truly talented at. She specializes in Young adult/New adult romance, horror, action, fantasy, and non-fiction under the pen name Kira Adams.

They say death can be beautiful. But after the death of her mother, seventeen-year-old RAVEN WEATHERSBY gives up her dream of becoming a fashion designer, barely surviving life in the South Carolina lowlands.
To make ends meet, Raven works after school as a seamstress creating stunning works of fashion that often rival the great names of the day.
Instead of making things easier on the high school senior, her stepdad's drinking leads to a run in with the highly reclusive heir to the Maddox family fortune, Gideon Maddox.
But Raven's stepdad's drying out and in no condition to attend the meeting with Maddox. So Raven volunteers to take his place and offers to repay the debt in order to keep the only father she's ever known out of jail, or worse.
Gideon Maddox agrees, outlining an outrageous demand: Raven must live in his home for a year while she designs for Maddox Industries' clothing line, signing over her creative rights.
Her handsome young captor is arrogant and infuriating to the nth degree, and Raven can't imagine working for him, let alone sharing the same space for more than five minutes.
But nothing is ever as it seems. Is Gideon Maddox the monster the world believes him to be? And can he stand to let the young seamstress see him as he really is?

Chapter-by-Chapter-header---About-the-Author
Julie ReeceBorn in Ohio, I lived next to my grandfather’s horse farm until the fourth grade. Summers were about riding, fishing and make-believe, while winter brought sledding and ice-skating on frozen ponds. Most of life was magical, but not all.
I struggled with multiple learning disabilities, did not excel in school. I spent much of my time looking out windows and daydreaming. In the fourth grade (with the help of one very nice teacher) I fought dyslexia for my right to read, like a prince fights a dragon in order to free the princess locked in a tower, and I won.
Afterwards, I read like a fiend. I invented stories where I could be the princess… or a gifted heroine from another world who kicked bad guy butt to win the heart of a charismatic hero. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that? Later, I moved to Florida where I continued to fantasize about superpowers and monsters, fabricating stories (my mother called it lying) and sharing them with my friends.
Then I thought I’d write one down…
Hooked, I’ve been writing ever since. I write historical, contemporary, urban fantasy, adventure, and young adult romances. I love strong heroines, sweeping tales of mystery and epic adventure… which must include a really hot guy. My writing is proof you can work hard to overcome any obstacle. Don’t give up. I say, if you write, write on!

Athena's Ashes Blog Tour: Review + Giveaway

Author: Jamie Grey

Rate: 4 Stars

Synopsis:

It’s Renna’s biggest job yet – convincing MYTH leadership that she’s put away her lock picks and is ready to save the galaxy, despite the dangerous implant in her brain. But with the Athena on the run, she’s working solo and facing her most ruthless enemy, the traitor Pallas, who’ll go to any lengths to destroy the MYTH organization. Out of time and options, Renna’s got one shot to take down the traitor before he annihilates everything she loves, even though winning this battle may cost her everything.
Athena's Ashes is the thrilling second installment in a New Adult science fiction/fantasy series that continues to follow lead character Renna Carrizal across the galaxy - from being hired by MYTH, to falling in love with Captain Finn, and stopping the traitor Pallas and his evil plans. The story is full of action, adventure, and romance - which will appeal to readers who enjoy various genres. I loved continuing to learn about the world that the author created - exploring it, learning about the history, and gaining more information about MYTH and their enemies. The use of detailed imagery and vivid descriptions made it feel realistic and I found it easy to immerse myself into the book. The characters were all well written with distinct personalities and flaw -  especially our main character Renna. She's the perfect anti-hero - a bad-ass thief who's a known thief and criminal, who takes on a job for MYTH - which basically goes against all she's about. She's smart and determined - whether she's using it for bad or good. I loved watching her character develop and mature throughout the story. As for the romantic aspect, I enjoyed watching Renna and Captain Finn attempt to figure out their feelings for one another and where things stood between them. The plot was fast paced and I loved the details that were included - Pallas and his evil plans to create a robot army, MYTH, and the lives of the characters - they all made the story incredibly enjoyable and a quick read. I'm excited to see where the next book will take us and to find out what will happen. Overall, I thought this was a fantastic second book in what continues to be an awesome New Adult science fiction series. Definitely recommended for fans of science fiction as well as action, adventure, and fantasy.
