Guardians (Wasteland #3)
Author: Susan Kim and Laurence Klavan
Genre: YA Dystopia
Release Date: March 24, 2015
Publisher: HarperTeen

Description:

The Emmy Award-nominated and Edgar Award-winning duo of Susan Kim and Laurence Klavan deliver a heart-pounding finale to the post-apocalyptic teen world of the Wasteland, filled with dramatic twists and turns. Bestselling author of Criminal, Karin Slaughter, called Wasteland "a Lord of the Flies for future generations. An irresistible page-turner."

No one dares to leave the District—the towering structure of glass and steel that is their protection against the unruly bands of Outsiders that roam Mundreel and the deadly rain that carries the disease that kills all over the age of nineteen.

This skyscraper stands amid the urban devastation, the city rumored to have once been called "Montreal." Esther and her allies have created a haven on the rooftop, a garden that flourishes, and a home for her new baby, hidden from all but the very few who know her secret. But as Gideon's power grows and factions form, the ultimate darkness is born from greed, and Esther must find a way to save the citizens from themselves.

Top Ten Favorite Books

SUSAN:
1. The Golden Compass, Philip Pullman (imaginative, dark, and unique. Genuinely subversive!)

2. The Dog Stars, Peter Heller (incredibly exciting dystopian tale of a man and his dog)

3. A Wrinkle in Time, Madeleine L’Engle (a classic. It shaped my life and really made me want to be a writer)

4. To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee (ditto)

5. The Easter Parade, Richard Yates (hard-hitting, beautifully written portrait of two sisters)

LAURENCE:
1. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain (one of the great novels about childhood and race in America)

2. Lord of the Flies, William Golding (another classic: unforgettably captures the dark sides of being young)

3. Empire of the Sun, J.G. Ballard (a terrific autobiographical novel about a privileged child turned feral during WWII)

4. The Member of the Wedding, Carson McCullers (a heartbreaker about adolescence in the South)

5. True Grit, Charles Portis (a tremendous novel about a young girl in the old West )
Guardians is the gripping final book in the young adult dystopian Wasteland Trilogy. Esther, her friends, and her newest allies have created a safe place to call home in an old skyscraper in what was once Montreal. At their home, they have a garden on the rooftop so they can grow their own food and no longer have to worry about starving. The downside to this post-apocalyptic haven they've created is the Outsiders - groups of kids and teens that rule the street of the city and survive mainly by stealing or scavenging. There's also the toxic rain that everyone has to worry about - it kills anyone over the age of nineteen. The bands outside the District's walls are becoming more dangerous, and with Gideon gaining power over the outsiders, a real threat is looming over them all and it's just a matter of time before it's unleashed. It's up to Esther to save the others from themselves, before everyone and everything they've worked so hard to create is destroyed.

This was a solid final installment in a gripping dystopian trilogy that always had me reading as fast as I could to see what was going to happen next. There continues to be a ton of action in the book, so you never quite know what to expect. The plot was well done with a fast pace and lots of action. The world that was created in the book was incredibly detailed and vivid with imagery, so much so that I could easily envision it in my mind. The one thing that always got to me and pulled me out of the thrall of the book was the age of the characters. This happened with every book in the series. The characters all act and seem so much older than they really are - it always shocked me when I was reminded that they were only kids. Again, I understand why the authors wrote the plot this way, it fits with the whole dystopian atmosphere that the story takes place in. I couldn't really wrap my mind around the age of the characters and the way they acted and lived.

The plot was thrilling and full of tense moments and exciting twists. Being a dystopian book, not all of these were positive. Actually - the majority of them weren't. The book was well written with an intense storyline full of twists and turns, and definitely had me turning the pages to see what would happen next. Overall, I think this was a great final book in a series that grasps the reader at the beginning and doesn't let go until the very end. Definitely recommended for fans of science fiction and dystopias, as well as those who enjoy action and adventure.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/23344352-gods-of-chaos?ac=1
Gods of Chaos is the phenomenal second installment in a young adult paranormal series. It continues to follow our main character - Darlena - as she tries to contain and control her Red Magic. After a battle against her best friend, Darlena's grasp on her magic is incredibly fragile. Without any other ideas, Darlena decides that she needs to find another Red witch to help her understand and wield her magic. After the Winter Solstice, Darlena goes to Scotland on her search for another Red witch. When she goes on a trip to The Vaults -  an underground city beneath Edinburgh. Something doesn't feel right to her and it triggers a burst of Red Magic that puts everyone near her in danger. Darlena doesn't know what to do and her magic continues to get more out of hand - she desperately needs the advice and teachings of another Red Witch. But the very witch Darlena thinks can help her, might actually end up harming her.

I have a deep love for all books that deal with witches, and after reading the first book in the series - this was a definite must read for me. I had pretty high expectations and hopes for the book after loving the first installment, and I'm so happy to say that I wasn't disappointed in the least. Darlena continues to be a fantastic main character and we get to see great character growth in her during the book. She's smart, a loving and devoted daughter and friend, determined, and doesn't go by anyone else's rules. She isn't perfect though - she tends to give the gods and goddesses serious attitude and she can't seem to gain control of her magic no matter what she tries. The other characters in the book were distinct and well written with their own quirks, flaws, and unique personalities. They all worked well in the story together - with each other as well as with Darlena, and the plot in general.

The plot itself was fantastic - the author was once again able to blend so many different genres together to make a wholly original story. Just like in the first book, we are able to get to know different witches, their powers, and history. We also get to encounter more gods and goddesses from several different religions and cultures. I adored reading about all of the mythology, stories, history, and their various characteristics. The author continued to  incorporate gods and goddesses with witchcraft - and I was again impressed by the effortless merging of the two subjects and how it took the story to a whole new depth that wouldn't have occurred otherwise. Along with the mythology and paranormal aspects of the plot, there's also tons of action, adventure, romance, and contemporary teen issues. All of the various aspects of the plot were blended together in a natural and effortless way that had me mesmerized from the beginning of the story until the very last sentence. This is definitely a book/series that fans of paranormal fiction will want to get their hands on. I hate having to wait so long for the release of the next installment. Also recommended for fans of all genres, as it has a bit of something for everyone to enjoy.

Release Week Blitz + Giveaway: Fall With Me by Jennifer L. Armentrout

I am so excited to bring you the Release Week Blitz for Jennifer L. Armentrout's, also known as J. Lynn’s, FALL WITH ME!! FALL WITH ME is a New Adult Contemporary Romance and is a part of Jennifer L. Armentrout’s Wait For You Series, published by Avon Romance. I love this series and can't wait to start reading Roxy and Reece's story!

 Fall With me

FALL WITH ME Synopsis:

Eleven months ago, bartender and weird-shirt-wearing extraordinaire Roxy and Officer Reece Anders had a one night stand. Well, kind of. She’s been in love with him since she was fifteen, and he wishes that night they shared never happened. She’s sworn him off forever, but the past and future collide, forcing her to rely on the one man who broke her heart not once, but twice.

Her best friend since birth has been in a long-term care facility since he became a victim of a hate crime years ago, and the person who put him in there is out of prison and wanting to make amends with him and Roxy. She’s not sure she has room for forgiveness in her and when she begins to receive frightening messages and is on the receiving end of escalating violence, she thinks she knows who is to blame. The man who already destroyed one life already.

But Reece isn’t convinced. The threats are too personal, and even if Roxy doesn’t believe him, he’s not willing to let anyone hurt her. Including himself. He’s already messed up more than once when it comes to Roxy and he’s not going to let history repeat itself.

  FWM Teaser 4
Someone—was it Melvin?—catcalled as Reece led me down the hall, and my cheeks flushed. “Okay, heman, I can walk all by my little self.”

He cast a look over his shoulder at me as he opened the office door. “I’m sure you can.”

Then he pulled me inside.

My gaze flipped to the roses—the roses!—but before I could say a word, he closed the door and my back was pressed against it, his hands planted on either side of my head and his face right in mine. Like right there, within kissing distance.

Wow.

“So, I was at my father’s place in New Jersey most of the day, and you know, he lives out near the Pine Barrens, so service is shit.”

I nodded even though I really wasn’t processing what he was saying as I was too busy staring at his mouth. Those lips, fuller on the bottom, drove me to distraction.

“I pull out of his driveway and I have all these messages from Dennis,” he continued, and I finally caught on to what he was talking about. “I honestly thought he was messing with me at first.”

I cringed. “He . . . um, he wasn’t.”

He shot me a bland look. “That much I figured out.” His hands slid on the door, stopping just shy of touching my shoulders. “What did he do to you?”

“What?” I blinked.

“What did that bastard do to make you throw a book through his windshield?”

Oh. Oh. My heart was now wiggling along with my stomach. “He really didn’t do anything. I just lost my cool. He wanted to talk to me, and I didn’t want to talk to him.”

“You don’t have to talk to him.”

“That’s what Dennis said, but I shouldn’t have damaged his car.”

A muscle flexed along his right jaw. “That’s true.” He shook his head. “Damn, Roxy, can’t say I’m surprised.”

My brows flew up. “You’re not?”

He laughed under his breath. “Babe, you’ve always had a hell of a temper on you.”

Ah, that was kind of true. “Is that a good thing or a bad thing?”

Reece cocked his head to the side. “A sexy thing, but vandalism and destruction of property doesn’t look good on you, sweets.”

“No. It doesn’t match my manicure.” I raised my hands, flashing him the blue nails.

He laughed again and then he sobered up, just like that. Cop Face was on, and yeah . . . the low coiling in my stomach told me I found Cop Face arousing. “You’re lucky. He could’ve pressed charges, and this conversation would be going in a whole different direction.”

My own half smile slipped off my face. “I know. It’s . . . I was just with Charlie, and he’s . . .” Unable to continue, I forced a casual shrug I didn’t feel. “What are you going to do with me?”

His lips parted as his chest rose with a deep breath, then his gaze dropped to my mouth, and his expression tightened. He looked . . . he looked hungry. “I have lots of ideas.”

Publisher: Dutton

Description:

An adventurous debut novel that cross cuts between a competitive college swimmer’s harrowing days in the Rocky Mountains after a major airline disaster and her recovery supported by the two men who love her—only one of whom knows what really happened in the wilderness.

Nineteen-year-old Avery Delacorte loves the water. Growing up in Brookline, Massachusetts, she took swim lessons at her community pool and captained the local team; in high school, she raced across bays and sprawling North American lakes. Now a sophomore on her university’s nationally ranked team, she struggles under the weight of new expectations but life is otherwise pretty good. Perfect, really.

That all changes when Avery’s red-eye home for Thanksgiving makes a ditch landing in a mountain lake in the Colorado Rockies. She is one of only five survivors, which includes three little boys and Colin Shea, who happens to be her teammate. Colin is also the only person in Avery’s college life who challenged her to swim her own events, to be her own person—something she refused to do. Instead she’s avoided him since the first day of freshman year. But now, faced with sub-zero temperatures, minimal supplies, and the dangers of a forbidding nowhere, Avery and Colin must rely on each other in ways they never could’ve imagined.

In the wilderness, the concept of survival is clear-cut. Simple. In the real world, it’s anything but.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25094291-the-infinite-expanse?ac=1
In my usual pre-traveling-practice routine, I take a few sips of sap and stretch my legs. When I run back and forth between the hills, Larn and Tela take turns beside me. Each time my bare feet cross the grassy meadow, I experience the momentary glitch. On my fourth run down the Traveling Hill, with Tela lagging slightly behind me, I focus with as much intensity as I can. As I did while visiting the clouds, I try to let go of conscious thought, sensing the world around me.

At the bottom of the hill, light blooms from the landscape and I blast forward. Encased in a multicolored web, I tunnel my vision to the beams moving in my direction. My stomach surges into my throat when my body explodes into a glittering sandstorm across the field. I’m so astonished by the sensation that my mind goes blank. In that split second of lost concentration, I feel the particles of my body slap back together with a resounding sting.

My arms flapping wildly by my sides, I must tumble fifty yards through the air. I realize I’ve already crossed the entire length of the field when I slam into the side of the other hill. Like a crash test dummy—no control whatsoever over my body—I limply bounce up the slope. I finally flop to a halt on my back, staring straight up at the sky.

I try to lift my head but scream out in pain. Glancing down at my body, I see a splintered bone jutting out of the skin of my left forearm with blood spouting from the wound. My left arm dangles limply from my shoulder, obviously dislocated, while blood drips from my nose and mouth. My head falls back to the grass, my vision spins, and I don’t want to try to move again. The spiraling images of Larn and Tela appear above me.

“You’ve broken a bone,” Larn says calmly.

“I think more than one,” I groan.

“We all do,” Tela says.

“Thanks for warning me,” I mutter, wincing at each word I speak.

“It’s simply part of the learning process,” Larn replies.

He drops to his knees beside me, quickly unscrews the top of the canister, and holds it to my lips. After reaching a hand behind my neck, he raises my head up to an angle so I can drink. Torment spurts out of my neck and races down my spine, but I manage to take a few sips.

“Tela, will you hold his shoulder in place?” Larn asks, taking the canister away from my mouth.

Tela kneels beside my head and lightly grips my shoulder in her hands. Lifting my arm from the grass, Larn examines the fracture. Blood continues to trickle down my skin from the cracked bone that’s sticking out of my limb. He lays my arm down on the ground with one of his hands underneath the break. While pouring sap over the wound, he looks up at something across the meadow.

“Is that Sash?” he asks.

As soon as I turn my head, my body jerks off the ground from the shock of Larn snapping my bone back into place.

“What the fuck!” I shout.

“I thought distracting you might lessen the pain,” Larn says flatly.

“What is ‘what the fuck’?” Tela asks.

“It’s an expression when you’re mad,” I moan. “It’s not a very nice thing to say.”

“Why not?”

“It’s not a polite word.”

“What is its meaning?”

“Can we not do this now, Tela?” I snap. “I’m kind of messed up, in case you didn’t notice.”

Tela frowns at me before roughly popping my shoulder back into the socket. Every muscle in my body clenches from the sudden bolt of agony.

“Would you tell me before you do that!” I yell.

“Here,” Tela says, holding her flask to my lips and ignoring my remark. “Drink this.”
