Description:

With her mother facing prison time for a violent political protest, seventeen-year-old Liberty Briscoe has no choice but to leave her Washington, DC, apartment and take a bus to Ebbottsville, Kentucky, to live with her granny. There she can at least finish high school and put some distance between herself and her mother--or her former mother, as she calls her. But Ebbottsville isn't the same as Liberty remembers, and it's not just because the top of Tanner's Peak has been blown away to mine for coal. Half the county is out of work, an awful lot of people in town seem to be sick, and the tap water is bright orange--the same water that officials claim is safe. And when Granny's lingering cold turns out to be something much worse, Liberty wonders if somebody at the mine is hiding the truth about the water. She starts to investigate and is soon plunged into a world of secrets, lies, threats, and danger. Her searches for answers and justice lead to even tougher questions--should she turn to violence and end up like her mother? Give up her quest for the sake of keeping the peace? Or keep fighting until the mine is shut down for good?

Top 10 Travel Spots

Hi Steph! Thanks so much for hosting me!

Lately, I’ve been answering a lot of questions about myself and DIG TOO DEEP and, oddly, my cat. So I was thrilled you gave me the option to talk about travel! I love to travel! Almost as much as I love hamburgers, anything by Joss Whedon, and IPA.

It took me hours, but I think I’ve narrowed my list of favorite travel spots down to ten. (Just to be clear, we’re talking about places that actually exist. My list of fictional travel spots would be much, much longer.) So…let me take you on a quick world tour, starting with:

10. GIBRALTAR
An English-speaking, monkey-infested giant rock with cool caves, sitting in the Mediterranean Sea between Spain and Africa. The pubs are awesome and the curry is amazing!

9. UPPER KULA, MAUI
Upcountry from Wailea’s pricey sand and surf is a lush green paradise full of mist and shade, farms and hidden valleys—all nestled on the slopes of the Haleakala volcano. Wake up to roosters and jungle birds and sip your Kona coffee while clouds scuttle past your window.

8. CUENCA, ECUADOR
Gorgeous colonial architecture, Incan history and amazing local handicrafts—hats, furniture, jewelry, and anything you can make from alpaca wool! The weather is perfect for shopping since the temperature hovers around seventy-five degrees, year-round. And no bugs!

7. MARAKECH
Not for the feint hearted, Marakech’s souks are a labyrinth of antique shops, hustlers, copper pots, leather goods, pickpockets, carpets, and more. In the main square (the Djemma El-Fna) you can have your fortune told, hold a monkey, and watch snake charmers while eating boiled sheep brains out of a skull.

6. COBA, MEXICO
A beautiful, retired Club Med next to an alligator-infested lake sits just down the street from an enormous complex of Mayan ruins. Arrive early and you can bike through the jungle and climb the temples without a single other person in sight!

5. RONDA, SPAIN
This ancient Roman town is built into the cliffs along a giant ravine over three hundred feet deep. The food is amazing—especially the rabbit stew. The scenery is breathtaking, and the nearby Pileta Caves have prehistoric paintings. I didn’t want to leave.

4. COUNTY CORK, IRELAND
Castle ruins, standing stones, ancient burial cairns, and the friendliest people on the Planet Earth. Also, fish & chips, Guinness, Irish stew, Jameson, and did I mention the friendliest people on Earth? You couldn’t find a stranger in Ireland if you tried. Also, Guinness. (It deserved to be mentioned twice.)

3. EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND
Edinburgh has a long, glorious, bloody history full of Kings and Queens, murder and intrigue. The damp grey rocks of Edinburgh castle whisper secrets to anyone who’s had enough single-malt to hear them. And the ghost tour operators on the Royal Mile can interpret for you, if you’re having trouble with the Scottish brogue.

2. SPLIT, CROATIA
When the Emperor Diocletian died and his palace was abandoned, the local folks just sort of…moved in and built stuff. Today, the town of Split is a meandering warren of spaces—homes and shops, restaurants and gardens—built in and over and around the original palace walls. You can still walk along the Southern gallery overlooking the sea, or grab a meal of the freshest seafood ever and watch the sun set on the Roman Empire.

1. OCRACOKE ISLAND, THE OUTER BANKS, NORTH CAROLINA
There’s something magical about this place that goes way beyond a picturesque town and stories about Blackbeard. It’s quiet and quaint and steeped in history. Add in miles of beautiful, empty beaches, darling shops, Southern charm, the allure of pirate treasure, and (of course) Howard’s Pub and you’ve got yourself the perfect vacation.

Thanks for sharing your top travel spots with us Amy!

The youngest of seven kids, Amy has been writing stories since she first learned to make her letters face the right way. Her work has appeared in Family Fun, A Fly in Amber and Stories for Children. As an architect, she spends her days restoring hundred-year-old homes in Boise where she lives with her son, a feral house cat, and a fake owl named Alan. She hates chocolate, but loves vegetables. She also loves traveling to foreign lands and the smell of honeysuckle on humid Southern nights. Amy is represented by the lovely and amazing Danielle Chiotti of Upstart Crow Literary.
