Genre: Historical/Fantasy/Mystery
Release Date: September 18, 2018
Publisher: Lake Union Publishing

Description:

Two hearts. Twice as vulnerable.

Manhattan, 1850. Born out of wedlock to a wealthy socialite and a nameless immigrant, Cora Lee can mingle with the rich just as easily as she can slip unnoticed into the slums and graveyards of the city. As the only female resurrectionist in New York, she’s carved out a niche procuring bodies afflicted with the strangest of anomalies. Anatomists will pay exorbitant sums for such specimens—dissecting and displaying them for the eager public.

Cora’s specialty is not only profitable, it’s a means to keep a finger on the pulse of those searching for her. She’s the girl born with two hearts—a legend among grave robbers and anatomists—sought after as an endangered prize.

Now, as a series of murders unfolds closer and closer to Cora, she can no longer trust those she holds dear, including the young medical student she’s fallen for. Because someone has no intention of waiting for Cora to die a natural death.

The Impossible Girl is one of the most original novels I've read in a very long time. I loved almost every single aspect of it - the characters, the setting, the plot - it was all fantastically done. My only small issue was that the author chose to write the book in the third person, so we couldn't get a really deep connection with Cora. I personally don't' like the third person POV in most cases, and this sadly was in that category. Don't get me wrong - I adored everything else about this story. And it's my own personal opinion about the writing style and I know that other readers won't have any problems with it.

Cora was a wonderful main character and I loved getting to know her throughout the book. She grew up portraying a young man named Jacob and his sister Cora. She had to make both personalities seem realistic and believable to everyone around her so she wouldn't be found out. She's also the only female resurrectionist in New York at the time, and she does a fair amount of grave-robbing and body-snatching, which was fascinating and creepy at the same time. I loved learning all about that time period and how these people conducted their business in selling bodies. The author did a wonderful job of bringing both the time period and Cora's world to life in front of our eyes right from the beginning of the book. I don't want to do any spoilers, so I can't really go into the plot without revealing anything. Cora's on the run from some bad people who keep getting closer to the truth about her - that she's the girl with two hearts. Which is something definitely worth killing for in that shady world. She has to keep two steps ahead of everyone else while trying to figure out how to keep her secret safe and figure out who is trying to kill her. Definitely recommended for fans of historical fiction, fantasy, suspense, and mystery.
