Twelve-year-old Gauge’s life has been cursed since the day he witnessed an invisible Great White Wolf steal his grandpapá’s soul, preventing it from reaching the Sea-in-the-Sky and sailing into eternity. When the superstitious residents of Bouge-by-the-Sea accuse the boy of crying wolf, he joins forces with another orphan to prove his innocence. They navigate their shared grief in a journey that ultimately reveals life-changing truths about the wolf—and death. The Wolf's Curse is a beautiful story about a gifted young boy named Gauge and the Great White Wolf, a spirit animal whose job is to carry souls to the Woods Beyond after someone has died. Gauge's gift is seen as a curse by almost everyone in his village so he's been an outcast living with his grandfather for most of his life. After his grandfather's death, he meets another orphan - Roux - and sets out to prove his innocence.

I ended up liking this book a lot more than I anticipated. It was a very quick read - I ended up reading the whole thing in a few hours. The story had a great natural flow that allowed me to easily slip inside Gauge's world right from the beginning. I really liked the main characters of both Gauge and the Wolf, as well as Roux. They were all rounded and complex which made them feel very realistic and easy to identify with. I also loved the writing style the author used. The story is written in the first person point of view from the Wolf's perspective. I always prefer the first person POV because of the deep personal connection it allows the reader to have with the narrator. I thought it was a great choice for the book and I loved that the author chose to have the story told from the Wolf's perspective. I definitely recommend this book for fans of MG fiction, fantasy, mythology, and folklore.
