Inspired by traditional Irish  Mythology, Mother of the River tells the story of a 17 year  old girl in search of her missing mother when she stumbles upon a forgotten  legend.

Ianthe was only six years old when her mother vanished and the strange statue  appeared in the river near her home. Now, eleven years later, the statue stands  as a memorial and a place where Ianthe often visits to tell her mother about  her life. But when an old acquaintance returns to town and suggests the statue  isn't just a statue, the presence of a mythical creature comes into question,  and Ianthe begins to wonder what really happened all those years ago.

With her best friend Fintan by her side, Ianthe searches for a lost legend and  discovers fantastical dangers, family secrets, and the magic of Ireland. But  finding the myth may not be enough to mend the past. And finding the truth just  may threaten her future.

May you have the hindsight to know where you've been, the foresight to know  where you are going, and the insight to know when you have gone too far- Irish  proverb

Dream Cast

I’ll be honest with you. This is a topic I have heavily considered. I know it’s wishful thinking that one day I’ll need to have this list, but in any case, I have put a lot of thought into who I would want to play the characters of Mother of the River. It’s important to me that all the cast members are either Irish or Scottish, and it was harder than I imagined to find the perfect cast. But I love who I found, and I think they just might be near-perfect for my characters!

Ianthe

The feisty, fearless, 17-year-old main character can only be played by the lovely Sarah Bolger. She has the eyes, smile, and spirit of Ianthe, and I think she would play her wonderfully.

Fintan

This was, oddly, the most difficult one for me to cast. It took a while to find someone who had the right look. Fintan needs to be strong and handsome, but not too rugged. Serious and sensitive, but still carefree. Iain fits the bill, I think, and if my books ever turned into movies/tv series, he would be at the top of my list to play Fintan.

Iain De Caestecker

Evander

Do I need to explain this one? C’mon. It’s Gerard Butler.

Althea

This was probably the easiest casting decision. CaitrĂona Balfe is Althea. Her look is spot on to what I always imagined Althea to be, she’s a fantastic actress, a stunning woman, and I would be so lucky.

Seán

Casting Seán took me a bit to decide, but when Robert Carlyle popped into my head, it seemed such an obvious choice! I’m annoyed I didn’t think of him sooner. Seán is described in the book as “a thin man with a thin nose and thinning gray hair.” Is that not Robert Carlyle or what?

Dubheasa

Initially, I wasn’t going to include Dubheasa on this list as she’s not a main character, but in researching other characters, I saw her face and remembered her voice, and thought, “oh, that’s Dubheasa!” So, I had to include her.

Michelle Fairley

The ScrĂ©ch SĂdhe

The big-bad. This would be such a fun character to adapt to the screen, and as long as she can scream like a banshee, I think Elaine Cassidy would be perfect to play her.

So, there you have it. My dream cast. There are so many other characters to cast, and perhaps I’ll share my picks one day. For now, I’ll get to work on my acceptance speech for when I win the Oscar. Happy reading!
