A Day in the (Writing) Life of Danika Stone
I’m a
reliable writer. I don’t get writer’s block, simply because I don’t slow
down long enough to feel it. My friends like to tease me that this is
because I’m a robot. My husband claims I steal his time. The answer is a
lot less scifi. I have a schedule and I stick with it. Keep in mind
fifty thousand words can happen as slowly or as quickly as you take… but
it still will happen.
Here’s a look into my daily writing schedule and how I keep those words rolling.
1.
5:30 a.m.: Social Media and Email time. Sorry. There’s no getting
around this one. I’m up early, and there’s a reason for it. I want to
connect with people on the West coast, and that means being awake when
they are. I wake up and check emails / tweets before I get out of bed.
2.
8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.: Work for my mortgage. Like many writers, I have
a second “real” job too. Mine is as a New Media instructor and I barely
have time to sit down during this time.
3. 11:00 a.m. – noon:
WRITE LIKE MY LIFE DEPENDS ON IT. When I have time to write, that’s
EXACTLY what I do. There’s no fooling around and no procrastinating. My
lunch hour is a power-house of writing.
4. Noon to 8:00 p.m.:
Work for my dinner. Afternoons are even busier than mornings, and I
rarely get anything done other than keeping my head above water. After
work it’s family stuff and life things, until finally…
5. 8:00
p.m.: Major WRITING TIME! My kids have a pretty early bedtime which
means that I get a pretty decent amount of time in after they’ve gone to
bed to write. The amount of time flexes, depending on what I’m doing.
If I’m in the middle of a book, I sometimes go until eleven, but most
often, I write solidly for an hour or two.
In all, those two to
three solid hours a day build up very quickly. I often sneak in more –
when I’m dropping kids off for sports, I’ll bring along a moleskine and
jot down ideas – but there are also months at a time when I write
significantly less. Like any other schedule, the whole point is to get
in a habit. Mine is solidly in favor of writing. And the more you write,
the more likely you are to succeed at it. I think that’s a pretty good
philosophy!
