Tell Me Lies Blog Tour: Review

Tell Me Lies
Author: Carola Lovering
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: June 12, 2018
Publisher: Atria Books

Description:

A thrilling, sexy coming-of-age story exploring toxic love, ruthless ambition, and shocking betrayal, Tell Me Lies is about that one person who still haunts you—the other one. The wrong one. The one you couldn’t let go of. The one you’ll never forget.

Lucy Albright is far from her Long Island upbringing when she arrives on the campus of her small California college, and happy to be hundreds of miles from her mother, whom she’s never forgiven for an act of betrayal in her early teen years. Quickly grasping at her fresh start, Lucy embraces college life and all it has to offer—new friends, wild parties, stimulating classes. And then she meets Stephen DeMarco. Charming. Attractive. Complicated. Devastating.

Confident and cocksure, Stephen sees something in Lucy that no one else has, and she’s quickly seduced by this vision of herself, and the sense of possibility that his attention brings her. Meanwhile, Stephen is determined to forget an incident buried in his past that, if exposed, could ruin him, and his single-minded drive for success extends to winning, and keeping, Lucy’s heart.

Alternating between Lucy’s and Stephen’s voices, Tell Me Lies follows their connection through college and post-college life in New York City. Deep down, Lucy knows she has to acknowledge the truth about Stephen. But before she can free herself from this addicting entanglement, she must confront and heal her relationship with her mother—or risk losing herself in a delusion about what it truly means to love.

With the psychological insight and biting wit of Luckiest Girl Alive, and the yearning ambitions and desires of Sweetbitter, this keenly intelligent and staggeringly resonant novel chronicles the exhilaration and dilemmas of young adulthood, and the difficulty of letting go, even when you know you should.

Advance Praise for Tell Me Lies:

“Passion, friendship, heartbreak, and forgiveness ring true in Lovering's debut… a fast-paced ride through hookups, breakups, and infidelities fueled by alcohol and cocaine, and with oodles of sizzling sexual tension… There are unforgettable beauties in this very sexy story.”
Kirkus Reviews

Tell Me Lies is as dark and daring as it is absorbing. I found myself immediately drawn into the desperation and misguided obsession of young love. Who hasn't, at one point, fallen this hard and gotten this lost?  Carola Lovering has created something unexpected and original, yet deeply familiar.”
—Taylor Jenkins Reid, author of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

“Riveting. With Tell Me Lies, Carola Lovering has given us a keenly observed, no-holds-barred examination of the mistakes we make under the guise of love. If you've ever fallen for the wrong personand let's be honest, you probably havethis book is for you.”
—Grant Ginder, author of The People We Hate at the Wedding

Tell Me Lies is a daring coming of age tale from a fresh new voice. This unvarnished look at both sides of a toxic romance is as resonant as it is harrowing, with characters so finely drawn they’ll linger in the imaginations of readers long after the final page. This book is unflinching, unforgettable, and unputdownable.”
—Andrea Dunlop, author of She Regrets Nothing

“Ever wondered what that bad boyfriend was really thinking? You’ll find out in Carola Lovering’s addictive debut. For fans of Jessica Knoll and Caroline Kepnes, Tell Me Lies is a devastatingly accurate portrayal of a toxic relationship. Once its hooks are in, you'll have no choice but to tear through every page.”
—Georgia Clark, author of The Regulars

Tell Me Lies is a mesmerizing debut novel that blends a coming of age story with contemporary fiction dealing with loads of relevant topics like friendship, love, trust, forgiveness, truth, and so many others. Once I started reading, I was immediately hooked and had to see how this layered story would play out. The setting was a great backdrop for everything that happens in the book and made it all seem natural and easy to imagine in my mind's eye. The characters were all very realistic and well rounded, including some of the secondary characters like Lucy's friends and family.

I felt this was mostly a character study mixed with a deep look inside a toxic relationship that has the ability to change a person's entire life if given the power. Lucy and Stephen were both very well written characters with tons of facets in their personalities that are slowly revealed throughout the story. One aspect of the novel that really sets it apart from others in the genre is the writing style. It's told in both the past and the present, alternating between Lucy and Stephen's viewpoints. It gives the reader the opportunity to get to know both of the characters on a very personal level during the story, both for the good and the bad. I loved getting to know each of them and how their lives became entangled and what happens after that fateful day. Seeing the story told from each of their viewpoints made the novel feel more whole to me because as we all know - every story has two sides. You might not want to know the other side of some stories, but with this addictive debut, the author gives us no choice but to see the darker side of relationships and people themselves and to take a long look inside ourselves. Definitely recommended for fans of thrillers, contemporary fiction, and character-driven novels.

Without Merit is a heartfelt and incredibly realistic contemporary novel that readers are definitely going to want to pick up. I don't normally read this genre, but I've reading some of the author's previous works and like her writing, so I thought I'd give this one a shot. It wasn't at all what I was expecting - even after reading the description. This is so much more than a romance - it's a character study that closely examines and dissects family structures in today's society. The novel talks about a lot of heavy topics - family dysfunction, secrets, mistakes, mental illness, sexuality, love, and forgiveness (just to name a few). The mental illness aspect was mixed in well with the rest of the story, but it was done in a fantastic way. I like the way the author approaches the subject - seriously and without stigma. I found that to be an important part of the book for me personally.

I really liked most of the aspects of the book: the plot, the characters, the relationships, and the romance (of course). Each character in the book had flaws and they weren't hidden from the reader. It made each of them unique and very realistic. I had no problem connecting and empathizing with each of them right away. I enjoyed learning everything about the characters, especially about Merit - the main character. The author wrote the story in the first person point of view, from Merit's perspective. This is my favorite writing style and I love that the book was done this way. We get to really know Merit on a personal level - her every thought, hopes, fears, emotions, dreams, memories - they were all open to us. Seeing everything happen from Merit's perspective made the story all the more real and palpable. I easily fell into Merit's life and could believe that everything happening was real. My heart broke when all of the secrets and truths finally came to light - from all of the characters. It made me think about how we all judge people without really knowing or understanding them or the situations. This book speaks of family, love, forgiveness and so many other universal themes that it can appeal to any reader, not just fans of romance. Definitely recommended for fans of the author and those who like contemporary fiction and romance.

It Happens All the Time Blog Tour: Review

It Happens All the Time
Author: Amy Hatvany
Genre: Contemporary/Women's Fiction
Release Date: March 28, 2017
Publisher: Atria Books

Description:

From master storyteller Amy Hatvany—whose writing has been hailed as “gripping and emotionally honest” (Stephanie Evanovich, New York Times bestselling author)—comes a provocative and compelling novel about two friends whose lives are changed by a drunken kiss.

I want to rewind the clock, take back the night when the world shattered. I want to erase everything that went wrong.

Amber Bryant and Tyler Hicks have been best friends since they were teenagers—trusting and depending on each other through some of the darkest periods of their young lives. And while Amber has always felt that their relationship is strictly platonic, Tyler has long harbored the secret desire that they might one day become more than friends.

Returning home for the summer after her college graduation, Amber begins spending more time with Tyler than she has in years. Despite the fact that Amber is engaged to her college sweetheart, a flirtation begins to grow between them. One night, fueled by alcohol and concerns about whether she’s getting married too young, Amber kisses Tyler.

What happens next will change them forever.

In alternating points of view, It Happens All the Time examines the complexity of sexual dynamics between men and women and offers an incisive exploration of gender roles, expectations, and the ever-timely issue of consent.

It Happens All the Time is a heartfelt contemporary fiction novel that will speak to readers of all ages. It had some really great attributes and just a couple negatives for me, which I've listed below. Overall, I'd definitely recommend it for fans of contemporary fiction, women's fiction, and chick lit.

Pros:
- Realistic main characters in Amber and Tyler. I was able to really connect with each of them right from the beginning and enjoyed getting to know each of them throughout the story.
- First person POV. My favorite writing style and the perfect choice for the book. It was told from alternating perspectives - from both Amber and Tyler. I loved seeing the story progress through both of their eyes and watching their relationship grow and deepen throughout the novel.
- Fantastic writing style. The author uses detailed descriptions and imagery to bring the story to life for the reader and make it feel like we're experiencing everything right alongside the main characters.

Cons:
- Some parts of the story felt a slow and the majority was pretty predictable to me, but this isn't meant to be a twisty thriller or anything, so knowing how things will play out wasn't exactly a bad thing. It's just not my normal cup of tea - but other readers will sure love it.

Twenty-four-year-old truck stop waitress and single mother Catherine Wright has simple goals: to give her five-year-old daughter a happy life and to never again be the talk of the town in Balsam, Pennsylvania: population three thousand outside of tourist season.

And then one foggy night, on a lonely road back from another failed attempt at a relationship, Catherine saves a man’s life. It isn’t until after the police have arrived that Catherine realizes exactly who it is she has saved: Brett Madden, hockey icon and media darling.

Catherine has already had her fifteen minutes of fame and the last thing she wants is to have her past dragged back into the spotlight, only this time on a national stage. So she hides her identity. It works.

For a time.

But when she finds the man she saved standing on her doorstep, desperate to thank her, all that changes. What begins as an immediate friendship quickly turns into something neither of them expected. Something that Catherine isn’t sure she can handle; something that Catherine is afraid to trust.
