Layla jolted when Quin opened her door. Then she rolled her eyes and took his hand, letting him pull her from the car. With a flick of his wrist, he shut and locked the doors. Then he pulled her close, keeping one arm around her as they walked into the surrounding forest.
Once they were shadowed, he opened his cloak, and she slipped her arms in, loving the soothing warmth of luxurious velvet. “You never told me how you keep from freezing,” she remembered.
“Magic,” he answered, carefully pulling her hair from the collar. Then he covered the tresses with a roomy hood.
“That’s all I get?” she objected.
“Are you cold?” he returned, an ornery twinkle in his eye as hooked the platinum clasp.
“No,” she answered.
“Then you don’t need more,” he refused.
She scowled, and he grinned, slipping his hands under the cloak and around her waist. Layla’s breath caught in her chest as he lifted her from the ground. Then she was face-to-face with him, lips fluttering around tiny bursts of oxygen laced with his scent, heart thundering as her cheeks burned.
“Is this okay?” he asked.
“Yeah,” she breathed. Aside from her embarrassing physical reactions, she was quite content. “It’s nice.”
“I think so, too,” he replied, supporting her with one arm as he reached up with the other. “I’m going to cast a spell to protect your ears from the pressure, but you shouldn’t feel any effects. Tell me if you do.”
“Okay,” she agreed, and he cupped his hand over her ears one at a time.
“Feel normal?” he asked, and she nodded. “Good,” he approved. “Tell me if that changes. Are you ready?”
“Yes.”
“Don’t be afraid.”
“I’m not.”
She meant what she said, but couldn’t help but squeeze her eyes shut and tighten her grip as he shot into the air, darting through a thick canopy of needle covered branches. When they reached open sky, he leaned back, letting her rest on his torso, and she opened her eyes, feeling foolish for closing them in the first place.

Family
Layla Callaway was raised solely by her mom, whom she was fiercely devoted to until death parted them. Now Layla has no family to speak of and secretly yearns for a sense of belonging. Joining a coven with more than two dozen members would be a dream come true, one she would hold on to for dear life if given the chance.


Love
Unbeknownst to Layla, her extraordinary potential to love emanates from her aura, inspiring everyone who finds themselves within her reach, so it’s a shame she’s grown up with only one family member to share her heart with. But she’s not as alone as she believes. Halfway across the country, resides a coven of witches and wizards (including sexy heartthrob Quin) who love nearly as strongly as her, and they’re impatiently waiting for her to discover her destiny, so they can shower her with the affection she’s been missing.


Coffee
Coffee cups appear in the MYSTIC series so often, you could play Where’s Waldo with them. When DESCENSION begins, coffee is Layla’s sole addiction; and her quest for a superb shot of caffeine intertwines with her quest for the truth. One of my favorite scenes in DESCENSION takes place in a coffee shop. So stock up; I hear the series makes readers crave a good cup of coffee.


Emotional
Speaking of stocking up, you might want to grab a box of tissues, because DESCENSION is an emotional roller coaster. It can be sweet, sexy, thrilling, thoughtful, scary or sad… okay, really really sad, and no matter what’s going on, the greatest emphasis is always on emotion. I strive to force readers to endure the emotions the characters are experiencing at all times. Add an emotionally-driven plot, a cast of magicians who are unconventionally open and honest about their feelings, and a tragic backstory, and you have all the ingredients for a crybaby cocktail.


Magical
DESCENSION is a Contemporary Fantasy with a dash of Fairy Tale and a twist of High Fantasy. Living among the blissfully unaware hexless (non-magical folks), the MYSTIC magicians possess powers limited only by their own imagination, concentration, motivation and attention to detail. They don’t go to a magical school; they don’t refer to tomes to cast their spells; they don’t need brooms to fly; and the only magic wands you’ll find are in the wizards’ shor… Oh wow, got a little off track there. What was I saying? Magic! Right. Ahem… If the literary emphasis is on the emotion, the thematic emphasis is on magic; and the magic is boundless and astonishing with kisses that actually heal and fire shooting from outstretched palms.
I endeavor to give readers a visually rich story, and using sensational magic to achieve my goal is so much fun.


Epic
The definition of EPIC includes these two passages:
-an episode in the lives of men in which heroic deeds are performed or attempted
-of unusually great size or extent

While DESCENSION is a regular length novel of 420 pages, it’s merely the first installment in the MYSTIC series, which will contain at least 6 books while following the trials of one woman. In that aspect, the word epic seems an obvious choice. Throughout the series, you’ll see Layla grow and change while shouldering the responsibility of her past, her family, her destiny and eventually the world. And heroic deeds of the smallest and largest variety are attempted and performed around every suspenseful corner as the series stretches from Oklahoma to Oregon and across the sea.
