Cover Love (Why you love the cover)

When it comes to book covers, a picture is worth oh, about 65,000 words.


It has to capture the characters, the setting, the mood, the conflict, the story…to be honest, I have no clue how cover artists do it. I’m just super glad that Entangled has the very talented Bree Archer working magic for them and for me.


The thing I love most about the cover of ANNOUNCING TROUBLE is it makes me smile. I feel like I’m looking in on two characters who have so much fun together that I want to eavesdrop. I want to follow along.


You don’t have to like baseball or even understand it. You don’t have to care about broadcasting or that the story takes place in spring, in Phoenix. You just have to want to spend time with these characters—with Josie and Garrett. I think the cover makes you want to do that.


That’s why I love it. I hope you’ll share what you love about it most!

Deleted Scene

This is a tough question to answer! I don’t really have much in the way of deleted scenes for Finding Me – most of what I wrote made it into the finished novel (and I’m thankful for that!). But one scene that I wrote that I ended up removing from the novel because for some reason, it just didn’t feel like it fit in, is a scene between Claire and her grandmother, where they are taking turns painting each other’s nails and talking about Claire’s relationship with Todd. For some reason, it just kind of felt a bit awkward to me, almost like a filler, so I removed it. If you’re interested in reading it, I’ll provide it here!

The day after my big date with Todd at the pizza place, I’m sitting in the kitchen with Grandma, painting her nails a violet purple with silver glitter. There’s peppermint tea steaming in a mug in front of me, so I gently push the cup to the side so I can get a better angle to paint her nails from.
 
“This looks really pretty,” Grandma says, admiring the vivid purple color.
 
“I thought so, too,” I tell her.
 
I paint the rest of her hand in silence, and when I finish, she holds out her left hand for me to paint next. I dip the brush back into the bottle and start painting her thumb nail.
 
“So how was your big date?” she asks.
 
I glance up from the nail polish brush and smile at her before continuing.
 
“It was…nice,” I tell her. “Todd really made me feel special.”
 
“That’s wonderful, honey,” she says. When I glance up at her again, her smile is so wide it actually reaches her eyes. I can’t remember the last time I saw her smile like that, with a genuine look of happiness on her face. It looks so much better on her than all the stress and the frowns and the tears that have been taking up residence there.
 
“It is. Todd is really unique.”
 
“How close are the two of you, really?” she asks.
 
“I feel like we have a real connection, Grandma. Like we’re really good together.”
Grandma nods. “That’s good to hear. I think maybe we should talk, if you are going to spending a lot of time with him.”
 
“Talk?”
 
“Mhm.”
 
“About?” I ask, before I realize what she means. Talk. The Talk. Oh no.
 
“You know you can tell me anything, Claire, right? I won’t judge or be upset. I just want to know what’s going on with you.”
 
I finish up painting the last nail of her hand and put the brush back into the bottle. “Of course I do,” I tell her. “I do tell you everything. You know that.”
 
“I know. You’re a smart girl, Claire. I’m not going to sit here and give you the talk, but I want you to know that if it comes to that, you should at least be honest with me, okay?”
 
I let out a sigh of relief. There is no way I want to have this conversation right now. Or ever.
“I know. I will be. We kissed, but that’s about it,” I tell her truthfully.
 
“I was young once, too, you know. It might seem like it was ages ago, but I’m familiar with those feelings.”
 
“Oh Grandma. I get it, I get it.” I slap my hand on my forehead, hoping this conversation is almost over.
 
She smiles, and when I look at her, she winks.
 
“Now,” she begins, “what color nail polish would you like?”
 
I hand her a bottle of shimmering orange. “This, I think.”
 
I’m trying to avoid any awkward feelings between us, and when she focuses on the task of painting my nails, I’m relieved that this conversation is over. I am always honest with my Grandma, but this felt a bit…too honest.
 
“Are you planning on going out with Todd again soon?” Grandma asks.
 
“I think so. I mean, we really seem to click, like I said. Plus, I really like spending time with him.”
 
“That’s good. You deserve a positive relationship like that in your life. Todd’s a nice boy, and I like him.”
 
She finishes painting my nails and puts the cap back on the bottle.
 
“Alright,” she says, taking a sip of her tea. “Let’s clean up and do a crossword puzzle.”
 
“Sounds great,” I tell her, putting the nail polish bottles back in the basket with the others. Grandma grabs her crossword puzzle book and a pencil, and we sit next to each other to work on the puzzle together.

 Kelly Gunderman was born a child of the late eighties in small-town Pennsylvania. A bibliophile in her own right, she is hoping to one day surpass the number of pages she has turned with those she has written of her own accord.

Having recently completed her Bachelor’s in Early Childhood Development, Kelly suddenly found herself with a bit more free time than usual, and began her immediately successful foray into blogging and Freelance Writing, which subsequently led to her renewed desire to finally put her ideas and imaginings “on paper.”

NELIEM World Building

The story begins on the small island of Madera, known for its vast apple orchards. With Madera’s population cut in half due to a recent plague, its rather insignificant in the Hugganoff Empire economical infrastructure. Only one of many islands surrounding the mainland Perla Del Mar, the most beautiful city and highly profitable harbor in the entire world. Other more affluent islands such as Odessa, Phillma, and Cortos surround Playa Del Sol, the capital of the southern region.

The Hugganoffs’s are direct descendants of the Embrian Dynasty, having now conquered over 80% of the world. Intermingling the vast population’s religious beliefs, Hugganoff’s have made countless pagan practices their own. They’re a polytheist people, viewing ancestral ghost worship and dark magic as common day occurrences.

The only people not to assimilate are the Outcast population. The most discriminated race, who’ve faced unending hardships, including starvation. They are the only monotheistic people in the entire Empire, a stubborn people who against all odds has managed to not only survive, but thrive. Their refusal to adhere to any pagan practices has but them on the wrong side of the law as they are targeted as easy scapegoats, accused of dual loyalties, crimes against them going unnoticed. The most profound injustice is that all Outcasts are banned from entering the mainland, thus forced to remain on neighboring islands in perpetual servitude.

Born in Queens, New York, Clare Di Liscia moved to California as a small child and grew up in the hills by Dodger Stadium. Constantly roaming the woods, she took to embellishing on the stories of Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddle Duck to fill her imagination. To her horror she soon realized there was no way to fit a miniature tuxedo on a frog. Fortunately in sixth grade, Clare won a short story contest with the grand prize of fifteen happy meals. She would like to point out that two of those meal tickets were missing by the time her mother handed over her prize. After traveling extensively throughout South America and the Caribbean, Clare attended KU Leuven, in Belgium for University where she studied Dutch and French. Cover Love (Why you love the cover)

I can go on forever about the cover for You, Me, & Letting Go! because I love it so darn much. Overall, it’s adorable and eye catching, and I love the colors (teal is the color for Tourette awareness). I can tell careful consideration was put into making this cover because it represents my story and characters so well. I love having Van and Tabby both on the cover, and they are pretty much exactly how I imagined them. Any stock photo of random teenagers could’ve been used to toss on the cover, but the designer (Melissa Liban) made sure to find the perfect two that fit. And the background is awesome because it’s partial instructions on how to create something in the book. If this wasn’t my book and I saw the cover, I’m quite certain it’d draw me in and ask me to read it.

Katie Kaleski has started down many career paths and held many jobs—indie craft store clerk, pizza maker, photo developer, shoe salesperson and cashier, dental assistant in the army, daycare teacher, student teacher—but her favorite one by far is being a writer. 

She’s originally from Chicago, so she says things like pop, gym shoes, and front room. Her favorite food group is sugar, and she loves writing young adult novels.

We didn’t really have any deleted scenes, so instead, here is a bonus scene from Catherine’s POV.

Mom glances over at me before studying the rear-view mirror as she backs out of the parking spot at the county jail. Her hands grip the wheel as she navigates her SUV through the lot and onto the street. After checking all three mirrors, she returns her attention to me.

Self-consciously, I reach up and pat my hair. It feels just as disastrous as my dress, as wrecked as our entire prom. “What?” I ask.

She presses her lips into a tight line before they part, then close again.

“Mom. Is something wrong? You’re kinda freaking me out.”

A grin tugs at her mouth as she focuses on the dark road in front of us. “No. Just trying to understand why I found you wrapped in the arms of a good-looking boy mere hours after leaving our home with a different good-looking boy.”

Of course. She has no idea Owen and I broke up. “I was going to tell you. We were just…waiting.”

“Tell me what?”

“Owen and I broke up a few weeks ago. We decided to still go to prom together, so we were hiding the fact that we broke up to avoid gossip…” I glance at my mom to gauge her reaction, and also to buy myself a moment. If I’m really going to be the new Catherine, that means not only standing up for myself, but telling the truth. “And to up my chances for getting the crown. I know you wanted that for me.”

She doesn’t respond until we come to a stop at a traffic light two blocks later. It must be on a timer because there isn’t another car around this time of night. Mom turns to look at me, her expression giving nothing away. “What on earth are you talking about?”

“Prom Queen. You wanted me to win. Just like you did.”

“Well of course.” The light turns to green and she eases through the intersection. “Being Prom Queen was one of the best nights of my young life, and I wanted you to have that experience, too, but it’s not that important. Certainly not worth going to the dance with one boy when you wanted to be with another.”

Now it’s my turn to be confused. “What?”

“Catherine, I have failed you in more ways than one, but if I ever led you to believe that being Prom Queen was the end game, that everything else was only to serve that purpose, than I am truly sorry.”

Tears pool in my eyes, making the street lights grow into fuzzy blobs. “I just wanted you to be proud of me.”

Mom checks the mirrors again, before drifting to the right and pulling up next to the curb. She takes a deep breath and turns toward me. “I’ve always been proud of you.” A hiccup escapes and I realize she’s fighting back her own tears. “And the fact that you don’t know that may be my biggest failure of all.”

I gulp in air to calm myself enough that I can speak. “I was worried I would be a disappointment if I don’t become a lawyer. If I didn’t get the crown. If you found out Owen and I broke up.”

She wipes a few stray tears and picks up my hand, setting it on hers, so our palms are resting against one another. “I am so sorry. Baby, all I want for you is to be happy. Part of me thought you could be happy by living the life I had, since I consider myself to be relatively happy. But you need to find your own path. And if that’s in theater, then I will come to your shows. If this Jordon boy makes you happy, then I need to get to know him.” She tucks a stray piece of hair behind my ear. “I meant what I said the other day. I went into law to do something good for others. Your dad and I have been talking. We’re both going to be making changes in our lives. You’re growing up and we’ll be empty-nesters. It’s time to figure out what the next chapter of our lives will be.”

I burst into tears and fling myself into my mom’s arms. She’s stiff at first, but then her body wraps around mine, melding into me. She smells like her expensive shampoo and a hint of the linen perfume she wears. She smells like home, like acceptance, like Mom.

My phone vibrates with a text and I disengage from her embrace to look at the screen.

Jordon: I’ve been sprung

Catherine: Happy face

Jordon: When can I see you?

My actual face breaks out into a happy grin and I glance briefly at my mom. “So, would you like to get to know Jordon better tomorrow? Oh, wait, it is tomorrow. Can I invite him to dinner tonight?”

“I should run it by your dad first, but go ahead and invite him with the caveat that we may need to reschedule.”

“Thanks. Mom.”

Catherine: How about 2nite. Dinner with my parents?

Jordon: Scary

Catherine: They don’t bite

Jordon: I’ll be there

My smile is still plastered on my lips as we pull into the drive, my phone hugged to my chest. Prom may have been a disaster, but this has been the best night of my life.
