Bone Echo is the thrilling second book in a genre-defying series that will appeal to readers of all kinds. I'm a big fan of the author and have read several of his other books. I've read the first book in the series and really liked it, so I was excited to see where this story would take us. I definitely wasn't disappointed - the author delivered another fantastic book for readers to lose themselves in. There were a couple small things that bothered me personally. The one that stood out the most was the author's writing style - namely the third person point of view. It's my least favorite - mostly due to the fact that we as readers can't connect as deeply with the main character. There are several major characters in this novel and I understand the choice to use the third person POV, but I (personally) would have loved it even more if it had been done in the first person from Charlotte's perspective. She's an awesome main character and I definitely wish I could have connected with her and gotten to know her better throughout the book. She has a very unique history and with all the craziness happening, it would've been great to get a front row seat to everything. The other thing that sort of bothered me were the multiple "mini" story lines that occur at the same time as the others and eventually come together in one way or another. It's a bit confusing at first, but once I got used to the writing it became easier to integrate the various plots into one major story line.

As for the rest of the novel - it was fantastic and all that I had hoped for. As I mentioned, Charlotte is an awesome MC and I loved getting to know her even better. She continues to grow throughout the story and I liked watching her gain confidence and power. The secondary characters were well rounded, even though there were quite a few of them. They all had distinct personalities with quirks and flaws and helped flesh out the story line. The main plot of the novel wasn't exactly unique or wholly original - not much can be called that anymore. But the author found a way to take a couple of different plots and wound them together to create something new and fascinating. Like I said earlier - it's a genre-bending novel that is sure to appeal to fans of several different types of fiction.

About DANCE OF DESIRE:

When Amber Watson walks in on her husband in the throes of extramarital passion with one of his employees, her comfortable, passion-free life is shattered in an instant. Worse, the fate of the successful country music bar that bears her family's name suddenly hangs in the balance. Her soon to be ex-husband is one of the bar's official owners; his mistress, one of its employees. Will her divorce destroy her late father's legacy?

Not if Amber's adopted brother Caleb has anything to do with it. The wandering cowboy has picked the perfect time for a homecoming. Better yet, he's determined to use his brains and his fists to put Amber's ex in his place and keep the family business intact. But Caleb's long absence has done nothing to dim the forbidden desire between him and the woman the State of Texas considers to be his sister.

Years ago, when they were just teenagers, Caleb and Amber shared a passionate first kiss beside a moonlit lake. But that same night, tragedy claimed the life of Caleb's parents and the handsome young man went from being a family friend to Amber's adopted brother. Has enough time passed for the two of them to throw off the roles Amber's father picked for them all those years ago? Will their desire for each other save the family business or put it in greater danger?

DANCE OF DESIRE is the first contemporary romance from award-winning, New York Times bestselling author Christopher Rice, told with the author's trademark humor and heart. It also introduces readers to a quirky and beautiful town in the Texas Hill Country called Chapel Springs.

READER ADVISORY: DANCE OF DESIRE contains fantasies of dubious consent, acted on by consenting adults. Readers with sensitivities to those issues should be advised.
Another series of pounding knocks, followed by Caleb’s voice bellowing her name.

“Okay, well, I guess if I’d wanted more of an explanation I could have returned one of your ten thousand calls.”

“I should…”

“Yes, you should. You let that man inside, darling. You just go right ahead and let that man inside.”

Amber stands there for a second listening to the dial tone, realizing that as soon as she puts the phone back in its cradle she’ll be crossing a point of no return.

When she opens the door, he reaches up and pulls his hat off so she can see it’s him. The gesture sends raindrops spraying from the hat’s brim to the pavement beside him. How long was he out in the rain looking for her? How is it possible that he’s here at all? There’s fear in his big, beautiful blue eyes and his tense mouth suggests he’s having trouble breathing.

“What the hell are you doing?” he asks.

“What are you doing?”

“Following you.”

“Well, come inside.”

When he steps across the threshold, he seems to fill the room. He sets his cowboy hat down next to the tiny boxy television. Then he begins to slide out of his jacket, one arm after the other, slowly, so as not to send raindrops spraying everywhere. And now there’s just the sound of the rain pounding the roof and the occasional roll of thunder and the occasional flash of lightning as the man she’s resisted for years greets her in an anonymous motel room.

He looks bigger than he’s ever looked before. Maybe it’s the room. Maybe it’s how close they’re standing. Maybe it’s what they did to each other just a few hours before. Or maybe it’s because she’s seeing him as a teenager, a teenager clawing his way through dark woods, sobbing and grief stricken and desperate to find his way back to the only family he’ll ever have.

“How long have you been following me?” she asks.

“I was parked outside your house. I was going to wait until you woke up but then you sped off so I followed you.”

“Why didn’t you call me? You knew I was awake once I was driving.”

“I thought you were going there, that place. The sex club.”

“I see.”

“Are you?”

“She won’t take me anymore.”

“Your boss?”

“Yeah?”

“Why’s that?”

Because of you, she thinks. Because she knows I’m in love with you.

“What time was it last night when you saw the moon?”she’d asked him.

“Past midnight.”

“But you only went to bed at eleven.”

“I couldn’t sleep.”

They both knew what thoughts were keeping him awake, thoughts of his father’s drinking and of how crazy his mother was going trying to rein it all in.

“Wake me up next time,” she’d told him. “I’ll keep you company.”

Such simple words, but she’d felt like she was jumping off the edge of a cliff when she’d said them. Instead of answering, Caleb gave her a long look as he fiddled with the leg of his shorts. She’d silently cursed herself, called herself an idiot and worse.

Caleb was just a friend. Honestly, he wasn’t even that, was he? Circumstances had thrown them together, that was all. He was the son of her father’s best friend, so they were basically like distant cousins, only with no shared blood in their veins. Crazy of her to think there might be more there.

If her friends could see her now, they’d probably laugh at her; the same friends who’d swooned that day her father had picked her up from school with Caleb in the passenger seat of his truck, and Caleb, wearing a Stetson that was about a half-size too big for his head, had given them a cocky grin, looked right into her eyes and said, Afternoon, pretty lady. Not afternoon pretty ladies, even though she’d had about four other girls standing on the curb next to her when he’d said it.

Clearly she’d made way too much of that moment. Sometimes afternoon just meant, afternoon and pretty lady was what a guy called you when he was trying to look cool.

Or so she’d thought earlier that day. Before he took her up on her offer and woke her up in the middle of the night so they could look at the moon together.

Which they do.

Because it’s beautiful.

When he lowers his right hand, the same hand with which he was just pointing to the night sky, her breath catches. Every muscle in her body tenses in anticipation.

Where will it land?

Review: The Heavens Rise by Christopher Rice

The Heavens Rise

Author: Christopher Rice
Genre: Paranormal Thriller
Release Date: October 15, 2013
Publisher: Gallery Books

Description:

New York Times bestselling author Christopher Rice brilliantly conjures the shadowed terrors of the Louisiana bayou—where three friends confront a deadly, ancient evil rising to the surface—in this intense and atmospheric new supernatural thriller.

It’s been a decade since the Delongpre family vanished near Bayou Rabineaux, and still no one can explain the events of that dark and sweltering night. No one except Niquette Delongpre, the survivor who ran away from the mangled stretch of guardrail on Highway 22 where the impossible occurred…and kept on running. Who left behind her best friends, Ben and Anthem, to save them from her newfound capacity for destruction…and who alone knows the source of her very bizarre—and very deadly—abilities: an isolated strip of swampland called Elysium.

An accomplished surgeon, Niquette’s father dreamed of transforming the dense acreage surrounded by murky waters into a palatial compound befitting the name his beloved wife gave to it, Elysium: “the final resting place for the heroic and virtuous.” Then, ten years ago, construction workers dug into a long-hidden well, one that snaked down into the deep, black waters of the Louisiana swamp and stirred something that had been there for centuries—a microscopic parasite that perverts the mind and corrupts the body.

Niquette is living proof that things done can’t be undone. Nothing will put her family back together again. And nothing can save her. But as Niquette, Ben, and Anthem uncover the truth of a devastating parasite that has the potential to alter the future of humankind, Niquette grasps the most chilling truths of all: someone else has been infected too. And unlike her, this man is not content to live in the shadows. He is intent to use his newfound powers for one reason only: revenge.

The Heavens Rise is a paranormal mystery/thriller set in Lousiana. It tells the story of Niquette Delongpre and how her family disppeared without a trace in 2005. It also tells the story of Niquette's best friend Ben and her boyfriend, Anthem, as they continue to deal with their grief over losing Nikki. Lastly, it tells the story of a guy that Nikki rejected before she disappeared - and who now wants nothing but revenge. Suddenly, in 2013, Nikki and her father Noah reappear in New Orleans to Ben and Anthem. Their story is confusing, strange, and almost impossible to believe. Once Ben and Anthem realize that Nikki is telling the truth, they must race to find - and stop - the one other person who has the same power that Nikki does - before he finds them.

This was a phenomenal novel that was a mystery, a paranormal thriller, and a Gothic contemporary fiction all at once. I'm a huge fan of the author and have read all of his previous works, but this one by far is my favorite. There are several smaller story lines intertwined with the main plot, but these only serve to show more detail to the overall story and weren't confusing at all. The characters were all incredibly well written, especially the three main characters of Nikki, Ben, and Anthem as well as the mysterious guy bent on revenge against them. They had distinct personalities with unique strengths and weaknesses and by the end of the book I felt like I personally knew each one of them. The setting was a perfect fit for the book. Louisiana and New Orleans hold an air of mystery and the supernatural already and the author grasps that and runs with it. The story itself is told in quite a different way than most novels - it is told between two different periods of time, 2005 and 2013, and is also split up and told from several different points of view. I enjoyed the way the author wrote the book because it gives the reader background to the characters, their relationships and the events that led up to what happened. We are then propelled into the present to see how the past events have affected the characters and their lives. I also liked how the differing points of view allows the reader to get inside the minds of different characters and see how they react to each other and the events that unfold. The paranormal aspect of the book was fascinating and truly unique. It definitely sets it apart from the other novels out there in the genre and in general. The only complaint I have is that at one point in the book I thought the author was going to go a certain way that I didn't want it to (I can't anything else without spoilers), but luckily it didn't go in that direction and completely restored my love of the book. The writing is impeccable with a fast pace, edgy thrills and twists, and a quick flow that made it impossible for me to put the book down. Very highly recommended for fans of paranormal fiction and mystery/thrillers. You definitely don't want to miss out on this one - it will be one that everyone is talking about for a long time to come.

Praise:

—Booklist

“My first foray into the world twisted by New York Times bestseller Christopher Rice [THE HEAVENS RISE] will absolutely not be my last. With rich, multi-layered characters merging into the lush backdrop of pre- and post-Katrina, south Louisiana, Rice had my attention from the start…In Rice’s world, nothing is as it seems.  Every twist and unexpected revelation fell into place smoothly and kept me engaged, wanting to rush ahead to see what may be next. I’ll be first in line looking forward to the next amazing story.”

—Suspense Magazine

“Christopher Rice never disappoints with his vivid people and places and masterful prose.  He will hold you captive under his spell as his images and emotions become your own.”

—Patricia Cornwell

“Christopher Rice has crafted a rich and haunting world in THE HEAVENS RISE. An excellent read!”
