Come Back to Me is a heart-wrenching New Adult contemporary romance that will leave the reader begging for more. The story follows our main character - Jessa - as she goes about her normal life, until the fateful day when a Marine Chaplain knocks on her door. As Jessa wonders and is fearing who they came to tell her is dead, we get taken back a few months to the beginning of Kit's (Jessa's brother's best friend) home leave. Kit and Jessa are reunited and both have feelings for the other - ones they aren't supposed to be acting on due to Riley (Jessa's brother). They agree to have a summer fling - during Kit's leave - and that's it. Of course, nothing goes as planned, and both Jessa and Kit find themselves falling for the other and not wanting their relationship to be just a summer romance. When Kit has to go back to the Marines, he swears that he'll come home to Jessa - and she promises that she'll be waiting for him. Fast forward back to the present, where there's a Marine Chaplain waiting on the other side of Jessa's door. She's panicking - who has died? Is it her brother Riley or Kit? She obviously doesn't want it to be either and knows that her life is going to dramatically change when she opens the door and hears the news.
I loved this story so much. I never really read contemporary romance because most of the books feel like they're from the same basic template, only with a few changes made to make it a little different from the others. I haven't read a lot of stories that deal with romances surrounding the military either - they just never appealed to me. I took a chance with this one - and I am SO glad that I did! This book is literally a roller coaster ride of emotions. It took me from smiling, laughing, and swooning over Kit and Jessa's relationship - to being upset that he had to go back, and then my heart breaking right along with Jessa's when she hears the news. By that time, I was seriously crying my eyes out. I don't normally get very emotional when reading - but this book had me going from one end of the spectrum to the very opposite and everywhere in between. It's a beautifully told story that's filled with love, heartbreak, grief, and real life issues - which made it all the more realistic and easy to identify with the characters. I loved watching Jessa and Kit as they're hidden feelings for each other blossom into something so much more. They both grow a lot in the book - individually and as a couple - and I enjoyed seeing it all happen in front of my eyes. I'm not going to go any further into the plot due to possible spoilers, so I'll finish by saying that this is one of the best New Adult contemporary romances that I've read and I can't recommend it highly enough to fans of the genre, as well as readers who are looking for realistic fiction, romance, and a story that deals with the ups and downs of being in the military.
