Sound (The Delta Girls #2)
Author: Juliet Madison
Genre: YA Paranormal/Fantasy
Release Date: October 13, 2015
Publisher: Diversion Books

Description:

Five extraordinary sisters discover that they each have a unique talent, an extra-sensory perception that enables them to see what others can't. It makes them incredible, it puts them in danger, and it brings them closer to learning the secrets that have haunted them their entire lives. These are the Delta Girls.

Serena and her sisters read a private letter their father wrote to their mother, revealing a clue about his disappearance that they never knew about before. But as they struggle to gain further insight through their sensory visions, trying to solve the mystery continues to prove elusive.

The Delta Girls try to move on, balancing their supernatural abilities with the daily trials of being teenagers. Studious Serena teams with the classroom outcast, Lara, and her charming brother, Damon, for a school science project. They end up studying more than they bargained for, though, when strange noises come from rooms in Lara and Damon’s house. There are voices, but only Serena, with her special powers, can hear them. This is until the trio experiment with Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP) and are able to record and hear them on the computer.

Bringing in her extraordinary sisters to help, Serena must figure out who the voices belong to— and what they want—if she is to have a chance at stopping an impending tragedy before it’s too late.

Description:

"I spent my birthday fast asleep. In a coma to be exact."

When Savannah wakes up after two months in the hospital, she sees a whole lot more than expected, things that could put those close to her at risk.

The five Delcarta sisters have never believed in the paranormal, not like their woo-woo mother. Instead they believe in the power of sisterhood, of romance, and rebuilding their lives after their father's mysterious disappearance nine years earlier. Starting anew in the small town of Iris Harbor, they see potential in all.

But Savannah's awakening after having surgery on a life-threatening aneurysm brings a unique ability to the Delcarta sisters–together, each can predict the future with one of the five senses. And Savannah has the gift of sight.

A serial arsonist has been terrorizing the tight-knit community, and the Delcarta sisters have their suspicions on who could be to blame, including a boy who starts as an adversary to Savannah and then very quickly becomes her whole world. Investigating these crimes, trying to stop them before the next flame is sparked will call upon Savannah to use her newfound abilities with the help of her sisters, and will put each of their lives in danger.

This stunning new paranormal series blends the sweetest of romances with breathless suspense, and introduces five young women who share a haunted past, an extraordinary gift, and an uncertain future.

Sight is the first book in a young adult paranormal series that features the Delcarta sisters and their new psychic abilities. There are five sisters in the family - a set of twins and a set of triplets. After the youngest of the siblings undergoes dangerous surgery to remove a brain aneurysm and then falls into a coma, the girls are starting to give up hope that she'll ever wake up. One day a couple of months after her surgery, Savannah has the strangest sensation take over her body - which is then followed by a vision. Immediately afterwords, she wakes up from her coma, completely fine. It isn't until months later that Savannah shares her vision with her sisters after having it played out right in front of her eyes. Each of the other girls admit to having similar experiences around the same time and on the same day that Savannah woke up. The fascinating part to their new abilities is that they each only get a part of the vision. Each of the sisters is connected to one of the five senses and together they can get the full experience of the vision. But what do these new powers mean? Why did they get them now and what are they supposed to do with them? The answer becomes clear when an arsonist targets their community - the girls need to use their powers to unveil the identity of the criminal and stop them before another disastrous fire rips through their neighborhood.

This was a truly enchanting and fascinating book for me - a phenomenal beginning to a new young adult paranormal series. I loved getting to know each of the sisters - each having their own distinct personalities and quirks. Since there are five of them and they're so close in age, I admit it took me awhile to keep everyone straight and not confuse them. Once I was able to clearly discern each girl, things went a lot faster and smoother. I loved each of the girls for their own reasons - as I mentioned, they all have their own traits and personalities that set them apart from the others. Because of their complex nature, I was able to connect with each of them separately, as well as a collective group. I was definitely excited to find out that this was the first in a series, and that each of the following books focuses on a different sense and it's corresponding sister. I loved watching each of the girls grow and mature in different ways throughout the story and I'm excited to see what will happen when they each are the main character in their own book.

Savannah is the main character of this book, and her ability is sight. I loved the descriptions that the author uses to bring Savannah and her visions to life. It was like I could easily close my eyes and find myself alongside the sisters as the novel progresses. The book is written in first person point of view, which is a huge deal for me. I've noted in several other reviews how important POV is to a story and the effect is has on the reader. In my opinion, first person POV is almost always the best (and my favorite) because it allows such a deep connection between the reader and the character. We get to see a side of them that wouldn't be possible in any other writing style - we learn their hopes and dreams, fears and insecurities, inner thoughts and emotions. Allowing the reader to have access to this side of a character creates a deeper connection, which then allows for a completely new experience for the reader. I loved that Savannah was the narrator of the book and it was told from her perspective. I can't wait to read the other books and get to know the rest of the sisters on the same level.

The plot wasn't wholly original, but it was written in a way that made it intriguing and mysterious. I loved learning about all of the different abilities the girls had, and how they used those senses together to create a whole vision of what they were seeing. It wasn't just a flat vision - the other senses added to the situation and gave it a completely realistic feel instead of being sort of boring. I liked how the girls have to band together - both with their new powers and as sisters - in order to figure out who the arsonist is and how to stop them. That part was a bit of a mystery and I loved that the author wrote it in that way. It gave the book a whole new level that wouldn't have been there otherwise, and I really think it enhanced the story as a whole. The book was fast paced, but really started to pick up speed once the girls get their abilities and the arsonist begins to attack their neighborhood. It was almost impossible to put down once it reached that point. The use of vivid imagery and detailed descriptions along with a solid writing style and complex characters brought this novel to life for me as a reader. I really enjoyed this book and I can't wait to read the rest of the series! Definitely recommended for fans of the genre, as well as readers who enjoy fantasy, mysteries, and young adult fiction overall.
