The Prophecy of Shadows is the thrilling first installment in a new young adult fantasy series that will leave readers begging for the next book. The story follows our main character - Nicole - as she begins her new life in Massachusetts, after moving there from Georgia. On her very first day at school, she discovers that her homeroom is actually a secret meeting place for all the witches in the school. Even more shocking - they believe Nicole is a witch herself. As she begins to adjust to life at her new school, she finds herself being drawn to Blake - the notorious bad boy who has a girlfriend. Blake can't seem to stay away from Nicole either, no matter how hard he tries. When the Olympian Comet crosses the skies for the first time in over 3,000 years - it leaves Nicole, Blake, Danielle (Blake's girlfriend) and a couple others from their homeroom with strange new powers. On top of the mysterious abilities, the comet has also opened a portal - one to the prison world where the Titans have been held captive for hundreds of years. Now there are actual monsters on the loose and attacking people - which leaves the coven with the task of decoding a cryptic prophecy - if they have any chance of saving the world.
I'm a huge fan of anything having to do with witches and witchcraft, so I was immediately drawn to this book after reading the description. I've read several of the author's other books and have yet to be disappointed, so I had high hopes and expectations going into this novel. I'm so glad to say that the book didn't let me down in the least. The plot was exciting and intriguing, and I was sucked inside Nicole's world from the very beginning. The story mixes together paranormal concepts with mythological aspects, which I found to be a breath of fresh air in the genre. I loved learning all that I could about the town, its history and the history of the coven, along with every little detail about the witches and their powers. Another aspect of the story that I couldn't get enough of was the mythology. I'm somewhat familiar with mythology and I loved every little detail that was included in the book. Mixing the two - the mythology and the witches - had me hooked almost immediately and I couldn't seem to read fast enough. There were some great twists and turns throughout the book, which kept me on my toes (even though I was already hanging on every word). The romance in the book was well balanced and didn't overpower the main plot line - it actually enhanced it and made the story all the more exciting for me as a reader. Overall, this novel was a fantastic start to a captivating new series that fans of YA fiction will definitely want to get their hands on!
