Description:

Cram ten hormonal teens into a spaceship and blast off: that’s the premise for the ill-conceived reality show Waste of Space. The kids who are cast know everything about drama—and nothing about the fact that the production is fake. Hidden in a desert warehouse, their spaceship replica is equipped with state-of-the-art special effects dreamed up by the scientists partnering with the shady cable network airing the show. And it’s a hit! Millions of viewers are transfixed. But then, suddenly, all communication is severed. Trapped and paranoid, the kids must figure out what to do when this reality show loses its grip on reality.

This excerpt is from the very beginning of the novel: an author’s note that serves as an introduction to the contents of the book and what really happened on the reality competition show Waste of Space.

From the Author’s Note:

The account that follows is my attempt to ascertain what really happened in January and February of the year 2016—not what was reported in the news, not what was claimed afterward in the statements from all parties involved. The evidence I will present is composed of the files found in the aforementioned packet, plus several additional records unearthed over the course of my investigation (some of which were obtained through measures that were not, I admit, strictly legal). All documents are presented in their original states and are labeled with as much information as I could discern.

The full body of evidence calls to mind a jigsaw puzzle at a yard sale—some pieces are missing, some are bent out of shape, and some don’t make sense unless one can see the full picture. The truth may be out there, but I doubt anyone will ever be able to irrefutably prove what it is. All I can hope for is that my version is the closest.

Full disclaimer: Because I personally knew and/or met most of the witnesses, and as I was watching and listening from behind the scenes throughout many of the events described herein, it’s inevitable that some of my own judgments and criticisms will leak into this report. But I’ll do my best to keep my perspective to a minimum and to interpret the events in an unbiased manner. To that end, I will refrain from telling this story from my point of view, as it is not meant to be a tell-all. From this point forth I’ll let the evidence speak for itself.

I am not the story here. I, like each of you, was only a helpless witness.

When I accepted an internship at DV8, I knew it wasn’t going to lead to a Pulitzer. The
network isn’t what you’d call “prestigious” or “groundbreaking” or “staffed by literate individuals,” but the road to a degree in journalism is fraught with despair, douchebags, and dead ends, and I was aware of and prepared for that. In today’s competitive job market (especially in an allegedly dying profession), I was ecstatic to land any internship at all. I vowed to throw myself into the inane, unending errands. I’d cheerfully fire off meaningless tweets, retweets, and “impactful hashtags.” I’d withstand indignities and humiliations galore, and after all that, I’d be on my way with six college credits and nary a look back at the eight months of hell I’d had to endure, all in the name of my education.

But then came Waste of Space.

And a different type of education presented itself.

Description:

Paraffin, Vermont, is known the world over as home to the Grosholtz Candle Factory. But behind the sunny retail space bursting with overwhelming scents and homemade fudge, seventeen-year-old Poppy Palladino discovers something dark and unsettling: a back room filled with dozens of startlingly life-like wax sculptures, crafted by one very strange old lady. Poppy hightails it home, only to be shocked when one of the figures—a teenage boy who doesn’t seem to know what he is—jumps naked and screaming out of the trunk of her car. She tries to return him to the candle factory, but before she can, a fire destroys the mysterious workshop—and the old woman is nowhere to be seen.

With the help of the wax boy, who answers to the name Dud, Poppy resolves to find out who was behind the fire. But in the course of her investigation, she discovers that things in Paraffin aren’t always as they seem, that the Grosholtz Candle Factory isn’t as pure as its reputation—and that some of the townspeople she’s known her entire life may not be as human as they once were. In fact, they’re starting to look a little . . . waxy. Can Poppy and Dud extinguish the evil that's taking hold of their town before it’s too late?
Wax is a fun and creepy thrill ride that readers will devour in a matter of hours. The book has a great flow and a quick pace, which allowed me to read it in an afternoon. I did find it to be a bit campy, which I thought was endearing and part of it's charm. The plot was pretty straightforward and actually reminded me a little of the movie House of Wax. The characters were all unique, especially the main character - Poppy. She's a huge overachiever and is desperate to regain her good reputation after a huge mishap on a reality TV show. She's smart, down to earth, determined, and a loving daughter and loyal friend. There was something about her character that annoyed me, but I can't seem to put my finger on what it was. Whatever the cause, it wasn't enough to really distract me from the story or impair my experience. Poppy was a good main character, overall, and I enjoyed watching her figure out the big weird mystery surrounding the town and it's inhabitants.

The author did a great job creating the spooky world that the book is set in. It felt realistic, even when things started getting strange and unnatural. I easily slipped inside the story alongside Poppy right from the beginning and I didn't come back out until I had finished the last sentence. There was a fantastic use of description and vivid imagery that really brought everything to life. I don't do spoilers in my reviews, so I can't really say much about the plot or what happens. It was a freaky mystery with some interesting twists and turns, and the ending was not what I was expecting - even though I tried to go into the story open-minded. All in all, it was a quick and very enjoyable book that I easily downed in one sitting. Definitely recommended for fans of urban fantasy, fantasy, paranormal, horror, and humor!

Description:

There was a time when geeky, squeaky-clean Max Kilgore would never lie or steal or even think about murder. Then he accidentally unearths a devil, and Max’s choices are no longer his own. The big red guy has a penchant for couch surfing and junk food—and you should never underestimate evil on a sugar high.

With the help of Lore, a former goth girl who knows a thing or two about the dark side, Max is racing against the clock to get rid of the houseguest from hell before time, and all the Flamin’ Hot Cheetos this side of the fiery abyss, run out.

Hellhole is a paranormal novel full of action, adventure, and lots of laughs. The story follows our main character Max Kilgore - a pretty nerdy guy who loves dinosaurs, works at the local gas station/convenience store, and takes care of his sick mom. One night when Max goes digging to try and find unique fossils on the big hill by his house, he accidentally opens a large hole in the ground - which then releases a devil. This devil isn't quite what he expected - he's red, has a scraggly beard, a beer belly, hates to wear pants, and loves to eat junk food. The devil tells Max that he's on vacation from hell - and since Max released him, it's up to him to provide Burg (the devil) with a home or there will be big problems. Max enlists the help of an ex-Goth girl at his school named Lore - and together they have to figure out a way to find Burg a house before his time is up and if he wants the contract they made to be fulfilled.

Although the thought of hell and demons on Earth evoke images of fear and all things terrifying, this book goes in the completely opposite direction - humor. I think this book is a perfect fit for younger YA readers, or even older MG readers. I felt it was geared more towards this audience than the older YA readers, due to the writing style, dialogue, and overall story. Max is a great main character for the book. He's smart, polite, always follows the rules, is a huge nerd, and is a devoted and loving son who takes care of his sick mom. He's also determined to do the right thing - mainly by getting the devil out of his basement - but he manages to make a new bargain with Burg (the devil)  that will heal his mom completely if he does what is asked. The plot was full of action and lots of humor that comes in several forms - from Max's inner dialogue to the devil's character and their interactions. It's a lighthearted book despite the serious topic behind the plot - if you strip it of the humor, it would be more like a horror story instead. The writing style is great - detailed imagery and descriptions help to suck the reader into the world the author created - and the pace is quick but natural. I highly recommend this book to fans of the paranormal and/or fantasy along with stories full of humor and silliness in general. Again, I would recommend this novel to younger readers - older middle grade and younger teens. It's definitely a fun and original story that readers will love to get lost in.
