About RED:

Red. The color of extremes.

Tate Conrad’s existence is annihilated. Destroyed by two men: one, her hero and the other, her worst nightmare. She has nothing to lose.

Determined to survive, vengeance feeds her. There are no limits, no boundaries, not even death, in seeking liberation.

*******

Rylan Wolfe is driven. A stellar FBI agent close to breaking the case of a lifetime. It’s more than career-making, it’s personal. Tate’s the linchpin to it all. They need each other to succeed.

For Tate, is he her salvation or ruin?
 RED Teaser 4

Spinning to face me, her eyes brim with fear, stirring an unnamed emotion in me. I don’t want her to ever be afraid, worried or unprotected.

“Shit, you scared the hell out of me,” she snaps.

“I’m sorry. I followed you. I sensed your mother was not happy about something.”

“So, you heard?” She shuts the door. “We need to be more careful, Ry. It’s one thing if Bobby doesn’t like you, but if you also become a problem for my father, you’ll be cut off or worse.”

Closing the distance, I take both her hands and pull her near. Again, my need to touch her is strong and instinctive.

“Listen, we’re being careful. I realize now my comment about Bobby being a fool was likely what caused her outburst.”

“You think?”

I grin at her sarcasm. My humor turns to overwhelming want when her tongue darts out to lick her plump lips, desire ricochets up my spine.

“You need to stop the I want her act because they all see it and while you’re likely doing it to get at Bobby, it could backfire,” she warns.

“I can’t.” We’re mere inches apart, but there’s too much space between us. Tugging at her, our chests collide, her soft breasts nestle in my chest. If I’m not mistaken, her nipples are hard. Her breath hitches. “It’s not an act.”

“Ry,” she whimpers. “We can’t do this,” she cautions, yet her lust-filled eyes tell a different tale.

Blowing by the sirens and hazard signs, I leave all reservations in the dust. Even though this is a bad idea, I’ve tunnel vision. All I see is her. This exquisite creature before me. Despite what I said minutes ago, about being careful, I want nothing more than to taste her. Have her. Make her mine.

Tate’s eyes dilate and darken with desire, her gaze on my lips. Her fingers curl the lapels of my tux, I take that as an invitation. Tightening my hold, her soft dips and curves mold perfectly to my hard lines.

My hands rest on the swell of her flawless ass. Drawing her deeper into me. Her eyes widen as my erection presses into her stomach. Feel what you do to me. I want you.

Cupping her jaw, she affectionately leans into my touch, a contented sigh passes her lips. Briefly closing her eyes, long lashes fan her light pink cheeks. Inching our faces closer together, her plump, enviable mouth is less than a breath away from mine. Fuck, I need to taste her.

Mixed with her natural, tempting scent and her wanton need, my senses are overpowered. I’m a goner. At last, the reality of tasting, sucking and nibbling those luscious lips, that have taunted and teased me, is finally here.

Description:

Bad girls burn hot…

Red is the color of Kia Alcott's hair.
It's her temper, which blazes hot and always gets Kia into way too much trouble.
And it's the color of fire. Fires that Kia can start…just by thinking about them.

When her latest “episode” gets her kicked out of school, Kia is shipped off to her grandmother, who works for the wealthy Blackwoods. It's an estate shrouded in secrets, surrounded by rules, and presided over by a family that is far from normal…including the gorgeous and insolent Ethan Blackwood.

Ethan knows far more about the dangers of the forest surrounding the estate than Kia can ever imagine. For this forest has teeth, and Ethan is charged with protecting the outside world from its vicious mysteries.

But inside, even the most vibrant shade of red doesn't stand a chance against the dark secrets of the Blackwood family…

Red is an addicting young adult paranormal novel that follows our main character - Kia Alcott - as she moves in with her aunt, who works at a huge family estate. The move definitely wasn't her idea  - her dad pretty much ships her off after she (accidentally) sets fire to her school. She doesn't understand how, but she knows that she set the fire - with her thoughts. Try explaining that to your father and the principal, and see how far it gets you. With nobody believing her and after several anger management classes, Kia finds herself moving to the Blackwood's estate. Kia figures that the Blackwoods will be another rich family who looks down on others, thinks they're better than everyone else, and flaunts their wealth. In part this turns out to be true, but Kia knows that there's something going on at the estate. She's not sure what exactly, but she knows whatever they're hiding is a deep and dark secret. Of course, the Blackwoods have a son the same age as Kia - his name is Ethan - and just her luck, he's gorgeous. But his attitude sucks and he fits right into her stereotype for the typical hot rich kid. Kia gets glimpses of what she feels is the 'real' Ethan and wonders why he's wearing so many different masks - and what he's hiding.

This book had me intrigued after reading just the description - who wouldn't want to read a book that has a firestarter main character, a rich family estate with some big dark secrets, and a hot guy? It definitely hinted at being more than this - that the Blackwood's aren't your typical family, rich or not, and I really wanted to know what these secrets were and what was really happening at the estate. I wasn't disappointed in any way with the book - in fact, it surpassed any expectations and hopes I might have had for it. It was absolutely better than I had imagined. I loved Kia as the main character. She's so easy to identify with right from the beginning. We get to know her on a really personal level - her thoughts, emotions, fears, hopes, dreams, and inner dialogue are comTpletely open to us as readers. She's a complex character dealing with typical teenage issues - family problems, trouble at school, not being believed when trying to explain herself. There's also a very unusual side to Kia - she's a firestarter, a person who can start fires just by thinking about them. Which she didn't even know she could do until she caught fire to her school and was then sent to live with her grandmother at the Blackwood estate. I loved Kia's snarky attitude as well as her witty comebacks, tough exterior, insecurities she tries to hide, and so many other attributes. The secondary characters in the book - Kia's grandmother Abby, Holden Blackwood, Ethan Blackwood, and all of his friends - Justin, Justina, Tobias, Sloane, and Colt - were all incredibly well written with each one having their own distinct personalities, flaws, strengths, and problems. Although they are technically secondary characters, the author gives them so much detail that they come to life in the book - almost as much as Kia. Ethan, of course, is the love interest in the book - so we get to know him on a really intimate level too, just like Kia. I liked watching Kia and Ethan get to know each other - from the false facades they wear to getting to know the 'real' side of each other, and watching how their relationship turns and grows throughout the book.

There are so many aspects to this book that I love and could ramble on about for days. I was utterly fascinated by the concept of Kia being a firestarter and what it entailed. We get to learn the secrets of the estate and the people involved in bits and pieces throughout the story, but each morsel was both confusing and highly alluring at the same time. I loved learning every single little piece about what went on at the estate - from the history of it all to how it effects the characters in the book. I can't really go into more detail than that due to spoilers. I'll just say that I was completely engrossed in the secrets and the rest of the package that goes with them. It's a huge part of the story, and I wish I could talk about it more. It added a whole new level to the book and also gave the plot a depth that couldn't have been achieved any other way.

There are so many supernatural and paranormal aspects in the book, and I think that introducing and combining these uncommon concepts puts the novel on a whole new level in the genre. It's wholly unique and gives a breath of fresh air into a genre that seems to have gotten stuck in some trending ruts. I found this book to be completely original, gripping, fun, and thrilling all at the same time. The author achieves this by using her incredible writing abilities - the story is one that could've gone either way - a flop or a big hit - depending on how it was written. Luckily, we got the author who knew how to handle this world that she created and guided us through it with growing fascination and lots of questions that would be answered in the end. I absolutely loved the author's writing style.

The story is told from the first person point of view - that of both Kia and Ethan  - who get alternating chapters told from their perspectives. I loved getting to know each of them on such a personal level and to experience everything that was happening in the book from their standpoint. I thought it was interesting that the same scene could be experienced by both Ethan and Kia - and yet they would have completely opposite feelings or thoughts about it. I also really loved being able to hear both of their inner thoughts, including their insecurities, emotions, fears, and hopes. This writing style is by far my favorite and I think that by using it, the author takes the reader a step further into the story than they would normally go. We get to experience so much more with this style - the good and the bad - and it's hard to enjoy other author's use of different viewpoints afterwards. The writing itself was fast paced and conversational in tone, which made it so easy for me to slip inside the pages and feel like I was there beside Kia and Ethan throughout the book. The world and all of the situations are really brought to life before us with the author's use of vivid imagery and detailed descriptions. Overall, I can't praise this book highly enough. I'm so glad I had the opportunity to read it and discover what a gem it truly is and I'm hoping that other readers will do the same. Definitely highly recommended for fans of YA fiction, fantasy, paranormal, the supernatural, or for those who are looking for something fresh and original in the genre. It's not listed as being part of a series, but I'm really hoping that the author will write at least a follow up, if not have it as the beginning of what could be an epic YA paranormal series that readers won't be able to get enough of!

By far one of the best YA paranormal novels I've read this year and a new personal favorite!

Alyxandra Harvey lives in a stone Victorian house in Ontario, Canada with a few resident ghosts who are allowed to stay as long as they keep company manners. She loves medieval dresses, used to be able to recite all of The Lady of Shalott by Tennyson, and has been accused, more than once, of being born in the wrong century. She believes this to be mostly true except for the fact that she really likes running water, women’s rights, and ice cream.

Among her favourite books are ‘The Wood Wife’ by Terri Windling, ‘Jane Eyre’ by Charlotte Bronte, and of course, ‘Pride and Prejudice’ by Jane Austen. Elizabeth Bennet is her hero because she’s smart and sassy, and Mr. Darcy is, well, yum.

Aside from the ghosts, she also lives with husband and their dogs. She likes cinnamon lattes, tattoos and books.

Red Blog Tour: Review + Giveaway

Welcome to my stop on the RED blog tour presented by Random House Children's Books! Today I have my review of the book to share and don't forget to scroll to the bottom of the post to enter to win a finished copy!

Red
Author: Alison Cherry
Genre: YA Contemporary
Release Date: October 8, 2013
Publisher: Delacorte Books for Young Readers

Description:

Felicity St. John has it all—loyal best friends, a hot guy, and artistic talent. And she’s right on track to win the Miss Scarlet pageant. Her perfect life is possible because of just one thing: her long, wavy, coppery red hair.

Having red hair is all that matters in Scarletville. Redheads hold all the power—and everybody knows it. That’s why Felicity is scared down to her roots when she receives an anonymous note:

I know your secret.

Because Felicity is a big fake. Her hair color comes straight out of a bottle. And if anyone discovered the truth, she’d be a social outcast faster than she could say "strawberry blond." Her mother would disown her, her friends would shun her, and her boyfriend would dump her. And forget about winning that pageant crown and the prize money that comes with it—money that would allow her to fulfill her dream of going to art school.

Felicity isn’t about to let someone blackmail her life away. But just how far is she willing to go to protect her red cred?

Red is a smart and thought provoking young adult contemporary novel that follows popular girl Felicity St. John as goes about her normal life in the small town of Scarletville, Iowa. Only, Scarletville isn't your normal town. It was founded to be a safe haven for red-heads and has continued to allow anyone with red hair power and popularity. Red hair is everything that matters in Scarletville, from high school popularity to getting into the local community college, and getting good jobs in town. Felicity is riding high as one of the most popular red-heads in town and has been prepping for the Miss Scarlet pageant with her mom since she was old enough to walk. Only Felicity has a big secret - her brilliant red hair is fake. It's dyed - which is a crime and a sin in Scarletville. When Felicity finds a note in her locker that states "I know your secret," she must put everything and everyone she loves in the line of fire to keep her secret safe - no matter what.

This was a very interesting book that has a fantastic moral to it. It took me awhile to get into the book and the pace was a little slow until about halfway through, but once the mysterious notes start showing up - things get really interesting fast. The characters were well written, especially our heroine Felicity. She's the perfect example of a teenage girl - on the outside she has everything: popularity, beauty, smarts, a gift at creating art, and her beautiful red hair. But on the inside, Felicity harbors the secret about dying her hair and it haunts her every day of her life. She feels like she's hiding who she truly is and with her mom and the rest of the town shoving the pageant down her throat and a secret blackmailer threatening to expose her darkest secret. There were times in the book that I really wanted to yell at her or smack her to get her to open her eyes to what was so obvious to me, but in the end it all works out. The plot hits on really important issues that teens and people of all ages deal with today - prejudice and bullying. In the book people are treated differently based on what color hair they have, with redheads being at the top of the chain and everyone else being almost second class to them. When prejudice and bullying over something so stupid as hair color is described in the book - and the extent that it goes - it really opens the readers eyes to what prejudice and bullying is doing to our society (or at least it should). I almost feel like the prejudice against hair color was a stand-in or metaphor for other prejudices that happen and if one stops to think about it, just how close minded and ignorant it is. I remember high school vividly and such prejudice and bullying occurred on a daily basis and usually over the stupidest things like not having the right brand name clothes or not wearing the cool new shoes or whatever fad that was "in" at the time. People were pushed around for everything and anything that set them apart - and it's a truly horrible thing. I'm glad that the schools are trying to adhere to a zero tolerance policy on bullying, but some things just won't change that easily. This book really opened my eyes to lots of issues that affect most people - self-esteem issues, bullying, prejudice, overbearing parents, and self acceptance. This story might read as a light, fun, and witty book, but it definitely deals with deeper issues. Definitely recommended for fans of contemporary YA fiction and those looking for realistic teen fiction.
