Vlad Blog Tour: Excerpt + Giveaway

Vlad (Veiled #2)
Author: Stacey Rourke
Genre: Adult Urban Fantasy
Publication Date: November 25, 2018

Description:

History believes me to be a merciless savage. A terror upon the Earth known as The Impaler. Archaic lore whispers I am the first of the vampire lineage.

These claims … are all painted in bloody truth.

Now, while the world watches in fear, a war is brewing. Humans are targeting vampires in merciless attacks to force us back into the shadows.

They woke me to be their weapon.
They know not my loathing for my own kind.
Even I cannot say for certain whose side I’m on.

I have bowed before the alter of darkness rooted in the Nosferatu bloodline. Been forced to drink of its bitter sacrament. They refer to me as The Son of The Dragon, and I laugh. For I, alone, know that malevolent essence is one no man could ever tame.

Sitting on the edge of the bathroom sink, I sucked air through my teeth at the prickles of pain awakened by Carter dabbing a wet washcloth to my neck. The puncture wounds from Vlad’s sizeable fangs would have already healed, thanks to my upgraded cellular regeneration, had he not been wrestled off me by a small army of his own people. His locked jaws sawed through layers of flesh and tendon, leaving the magi with no choice but to lasso Vlad with silver chains to pry him off my slumped form. It took a full bag of blood and two of the pseudo-vamp serums to revive me, making it the second time in as many days that I had to be brought back from death’s door. As budding hobbies went, this one wasn’t the best.

Face folded in a deep frown, Carter wrung out the washcloth beneath the running tap, tinging the water a dirty copper shade. Rewetting it, he resumed his delicate cleaning. “I have never felt more useless in my life. He had you pinned there, and I … froze.”

“You mean you couldn’t single-handedly fend off the father of all vampires? What the hell am I even doing here, then? That’s my only reason for hanging out with you.” Catching his hand, I forced him to meet my eye. “Seriously, Carter, did you see how many people it took to pull him off me? Vampires and magi. I counted roughly thirteen before I lost the ability to decipher shapes.”

Jaw tensed, he used the knuckle of his index finger to lift my chin. “That doesn’t make me feel any better. He nearly ripped your damned head off.”

White-washing my face of all emotion, I blinked in his direction. “Tell me the truth … did he fuck up my hair? Because gushing throat wounds I can handle, jacked up hair I cannot.”

With a bitter shake of his head, he swallowed down his boiling rage. “Can we please just … for a minute.”

I took the washcloth from his hand, folded it into a makeshift gauze, and slapped it to my neck. “You must mean business. There was a complete lack of verbage in that sentence. Sloppy work, Mr. Reporter.”

Filling his lungs, Carter glanced my way, his handsome features marred by sorrow. “You’re not the kind of girl who needs, or wants, to be saved. It would just make me feel better, if a situation ever got out of control, that I could … you know.”

“Verbs are not your strong suit, today.” Scooting forward, I hopped off the edge of the white marble countertop.

Carter caught my wrist, and tugged me closer. “Protect you. All these life and death situations you’re thrust into every day, and I feel powerless to keep you safe.”

The warmth of his breath coursed over my cheeks, awakening a tingle of awareness in my core that his lips lingered mere inches from mine. Gazing into the luminous pools of his azure stare, I toyed with questions I was in no way prepared to answer.

Entombed in Glass Blog Tour: Excerpt + Giveaway

Entombed in Glass (Unfortunate Soul Chronicles #2)
Author: Stacey Rourke
Genre: YA Fantasy
Publication Date: March 29, 2018

Description:

Mirror, mirror on the wall.
What’s behind that fated call?
He’s the seer of present, future, and past,
Yet remains a nameless face entombed in glass.

Raised as a servant in the underwater kingdom of Atlantica, Alastor worked his way up to a regal member of the Royal Guard. Only as a decorated soldier did he stand a chance of winning the hand of the woman he’s loved since childhood … Poseidon’s only daughter, Princess Vanessa. But, when the war against humans rages, dark magics are evoked to give the mermen a fighting chance. Temporarily granted legs, they charge from the sea into a doomed battle.

Doing the bidding of his masters as a trusted pawn,
The claims of his loyalty couldn’t be more wrong.

Waking on land, with bodies all around, Alastor’s lone goal becomes returning to the ocean and the only life he’s ever known. A plan that is quickly diverted when Hades, Lord of the Underworld, appears with a twisted agenda all his own. Cast to a land far from the lapping comforts of home, Alastor’s sole companion is a troubled misfit named Sterling that soon comes to depend on him. Trained to be a hero, how far is Alastor willing to go to return to the woman he loves? And can he live with the sacrifices he’s forced to make?

Each day he schemes to break free from their thrall,
and honor a self-made vow … to kill them all.

“Throw him in the stocks!” a commanding voice boomed.

“No, please! I meant no harm! Sometimes, I just … end up places!” Sterling shrieked, his feet dragging over the ground.

“End up places?” Holding him by the arms, the soldiers forced him forward. “You were in the nursery of the infant princess. That is dastardly, deliberate, and you shall pay dearly for it.”

Slapped awake by their shouts, I pushed from the straw-covered ground and stumbled to the stall door through a thick cloud of grogginess.

“I was in the nursery of the princess?” Sterling scowled, visibly perplexed by such an accusation. A crowd had begun to form in the square, the sounds of their scuffle waking the sleeping court. A beat later Sterling’s eyes brightened. “Ah, yes! I was in the nursery of the princess!”

“He admits it!”

“To the stocks with him!”

“The king will have his head!” The armor-clad soldiers shouted over each other.

I took a step toward helping him, only to be hit by a powerful wave of vertigo. Hand gripping the door frame, I struggled to steady myself. My eyes. Something was wrong with my eyes. Blinking hard, I squinted to focus.

“Alastor! There’s my friend Alastor!” Limp feet thumping up the stairs, Sterling was heaved onto the raised platform of the stocks. “Tell them! Tell them about my affliction!”

Pushing off the door, I staggered out through the haze causing my temples to pound. “He … slends up paces,” was the best my thick tongue could slur.

“Compelling counterpoint, by the drunk,” one of the soldiers sneered, shoving Sterling forward with more force than necessary.

Blinking hard, I opened my eyes to a world of starbursts and strobing colors. Jaw swinging slack, I marveled at the flashes of pink and purple pulsating around Sterling in a hypnotic current. The soldiers manhandling him were haloed by a pulse of red flaring around them. Every person my stare swung to reflected another variation of a color.

While I was momentarily frozen by this newfound rainbow, Sterling’s head was snapped forward by an elbow to the skull. “Gents, please! If you could just give me a moment, this can all be explained as the innocent act it was!”

“You can tell us all about it, while you’re locked up and baking in the midday sun!” the husky guard with a red, wiry beard growled. Gritting his teeth, he attempted to shove Sterling into the binding contraption, only to have him wriggle from his grasp.

“I would really prefer we talk beforehand.” Squeezing his eyes shut, Sterling vanished with an audible pop. While the guards holding him fumbled to regain their footing, he reappeared perched crosslegged atop of the stocks. “Am I back? Is all of me here?”

“Commander, he has magic!” A young soldier with a rash of freckles yelped, reaching for his sword.

“I do?” Sterling pulled back, arms pinwheeling to keep his balance. “How wonderful! What kind?”

“Get down at once!” red-beard rumbled. Hand curling around one of the support posts, he scanned the contraption for his own way up.

“Gladly, just as soon as you stop trying to stick my head in things,” Sterling bargained with an enthusiastic nod.

Using one of the arm restraints as a foothold, Red-beard heaved himself up with a series of strained grunts. “No such agreement will be made. You will come down and face your sentencing like a man!”

The instant his hand closed around Sterling’s ankle, the enigmatic imp disappeared yet again. This time he solidified on top of the castle wall. Patting himself down, he did a cursory scan to ensure all his parts made the journey with him. “Bugger, my pants are on backwards. Hope the bits underneath are still facing the proper way.”

Veiled
Author: Stacey Rourke
Genre: Adult Urban Fantasy

Publication Date: November 7, 2017

Description:

Political propaganda would have us believe vampires are our friends. Fanged teddy bears misunderstood thanks to archaic lore. Activists picket for them to be welcomed into our society.

They claim vamps don’t kill.
They preach we are safe.
They … are dead wrong.

One year ago a hive slaughtered my family and left me for dead. Found by a team of scientists with their own agenda, I was forged into an unstoppable weapon.

I possess their strength, with none of their weaknesses.
I can move among them free from their crippling hunger.
I am their greatest threat.

Armed with this arsenal, vengeance will feed my desire to penetrate the seedy underbelly of their fetishized lifestyle and expose them for the monsters they truly are.
Goodreads / Amazon
Of all the vampire lore I wished were true, there was none more so than the absence of a reflection. Fresh from the shower, which offered temporary relief from the constant chill of my flesh, I stared at the stranger in the mirror with unbridled loathing.

The blonde girl with an easy smile that met me at every reflective surface had vanished. In her place stood a black swan of threatening elegance. Any trace of who I had been was wiped away like steam from the mirror.

The scar above my lip from when I fell off my bike as a kid.

The shamrock tattoo on my hip I hid from my parents.

The evidence from where my throat had been ripped open by vicious beasts.

All … gone.

Something in the transition stained my hair a deep, inky black. Unable to get all the matted blood out of it, Micah resorted to cutting my tresses into a blunt, chin-length bob. Turning my head one way then the other, I sucked in my cheeks. Maybe starvation was to blame for my gaunt appearance, but my features seemed sharpened to a deadly edge. The look in my eye more feral. Every inch of me was an enigma, even to me.

When it came down to it, there was only one thing I knew for certain about the new girl staring back at me: she was born into this world under a shroud of blood and chaos.

Rise of the Sea Witch Blog Tour: Review + Giveaway

Rise of the Sea Witch
Author: Stacey Rourke

Genres: YA Fantasy
Publication Date: June 19, 2017

Description:

Details of the sea witch’s banishment have been exaggerated. The body count that preempted it was not. Once an illustrious princess, her hands and tentacles were stained with the blood of thousands. No one could comprehend how the hooks of madness dragged her down from her life of privilege.

Born Princess Vanessa of Atlantica, the ambitious young royal was one of two children born to the great King Poseidon. She and her brother, Triton, were groomed from birth to rule. Yet only one would ascend that coveted throne. While carefree Triton flits through his training with a cavalier demeanor and beguiling charm, Vanessa’s hunger for her father’s acceptance drives her to push herself to the limits of magic, and combat to become a leader worthy of her people.

When war against the humans ravages their once regal kingdom, political sides are chosen. Factions from the seven seas challenge the existing leadership, pitting Vanessa against her brother in a vicious battle for the crown. Traitors are exposed, dark family secrets revealed, and a once strong sibling bond is strained to its breaking point.

Only when the ink black waters from the ultimate betrayal rescind, will the truth be known of how the villainous sea witch rose with one name on her vengeful lips–Triton.

Rise of the Sea Witch is a highly original and addictive YA fantasy novel that fans of fairy tales are going to devour. I'm a huge fan of the fairy tale retelling trend that's been happening lately, and this book definitely falls into that category. I've read a few retellings of The Little Mermaid, but the author takes this story to a whole new level to tell the tale of the sea witch. I love that we get to know Vanessa when she's younger and learn what happens in her life to turn her into the crazy villain we're all familiar with. It's a wholly unique twist on a favorite tale of mine, and I think it was incredibly well written. Vanessa is the MC of the book, and she is definitely an interesting one. Whenever we think of her character, an immediate image of a horrible villain comes to mind. With this story, we get to know the girl before she went bad and see what made her that way. One thing I want to note is the writing style. This is a huge point of interest for me when reading, and I almost always prefer the first person because of the personal connection between reader and MC. I'm so happy that the author chose to write the novel in the first person with Vanessa as the narrator. It wouldn't have had the same effect if done in another way - but with this POV, it's a perfect fit. I felt myself identifying and empathizing with Vanessa right from the beginning. Yes, she ends up being a cruel villain, but she wasn't always that way - and we get to know her before she turns bad. I felt sorry for her when it came to her father and his dismissive attitude towards her and I can understand her yearning for his love and attention - to the point of using her magic in ways she shouldn't. I enjoyed getting to know Vanessa throughout the book and seeing her change and grow - even if it wasn't for the best.

The plot had elements that were central to most fairy tales - a princess in some kind of predicament, a love interest, and a journey to finding a way out of the trouble - however that may be. Even though the plot wasn't always fully unique, the story was fresh and definitely sets itself apart from any other books out there. Like I mentioned, I've read several retellings of The Little Mermaid, but none that centered around the backstory of the sea witch. It's a brilliant idea and the author does a fantastic job making it come to life. I easily slipped inside Vanessa's world and I didn't come back out until the very last word. I highly recommend this book to fans of YA, fantasy, paranormal, science fiction, and (of course) fairy tales and retellings.

Watching her mother die was the most beautiful thing Preen had ever witnessed. There was no choked breath rattling from her lungs. No frothy bile bubbling past her paling lips. Nothing so vile tarnished the moment of pure peace in which Haddy Hester drew her final breath and crossed Death’s threshold with a contented smile curled across her lips.

Preen held her mother’s cold, still hand in both of hers, dotting one last kiss to the tender palm that had dried her tears so many times. Now they fell free, unchecked in this suddenly callous world. Her head tilted, the curtain of her mahogany hair sweeping over her shoulders. Gazing upon her mother’s beauty, she was relieved the sweeping stillness of death could not pilfer it.

In a slow, sweet lullaby, she sang her mother’s spirit off to the Summerland, just as her mother had sung to her when she was but a babe. “Tom, he was a piper’s son. He learnt to play when he was young. And all the tune that he could play, was o’er the hills and far away.”

Wiping her tears away with the back of her hand, Preen folded her mother’s hands neatly over her midsection and silently assured her own aching heart that they would meet again someday.
