Jane of Air Blog Tour: Spotlight + Giveaway

Jane of Air (The Tattoed Girl #1)
Author: Jessica Penot

Description:

Jane has spent her entire life hiding. Hiding under bulky clothing. Hiding behind books. Hiding behind glasses. Abandoned in an emergency room at the age of four with her name written on her forehead in Sharpie and a mysterious tattoo of a door on her back, Jane grew up in foster care and learned early on that blending in with normal people was the only way to survive.

Now, at the age of 16, Jane is hoping to get a fresh start at a prestigious college on a full scholarship. With limited resources and no family to help her, Jane takes a job as a live-in companion to a wealthy old woman who lives near the school. Jane grows to care for Miss Adele and loves her new home, the magnificent Thornfield Hall, even though everyone says it’s haunted. She doesn’t even mind Adele’s brooding grandson, Edward Rochester, who the locals believe murdered his first girlfriend.

At first Jane tries to stay away from Edward, but she can’t help being drawn to him. As her attraction grows, so do the whispers about the dark secrets that Edward is hiding. After Jane witnesses several improbably accidents, she realizes that any sensible girl should run away in terror. She realizes that only a fool would stay, yet she can’t make herself leave no matter how dark the shadows grow and how real the ghosts become. As her fears escalate, her tattoo begins to change and spread across her back. Jane knows something wicked lurks at Thornfield and she knows it’s connected to her. She knows the only way to stop the darkness is to run, but somehow, she can’t seem to find the strength to leave the only person she’s ever loved.

The firebird hovered at the entrance of the canyon watching the three of them.

Blue was crunching on a rock. He giggled and said something that sounded like “silly bird” to the pendragon and they all laughed.

It was ridiculous. Girasol felt completely powerless and her feelings were hurt, too. She had no idea how she could help them.

“How can I make them listen to me?” she asked the mountains. Her normally bright orange flames had become a faint red glow.

"You can't," a voice which seemed to come from nowhere and everywhere at the same time answered. "I have induced hebephrenia into their feeble minds."

"Who are you and what is heb-phren-whatever you called it?" Girasol flared, melting some of the ice from the nearby rock faces.

"My, aren't you a hot-head?" the voice chuckled at her display of anger. "I am Yegwa. They call me the spirit of false springtime. I have put your friends and the pendragon under a spell which makes them think this is a wonderful place to live."

“Let them go," the firebird demanded, blue-white sparks spouting from her feathered crown. She could not see the spirit and was very frustrated.

"Let them go? I wouldn't dream of it. It’s not often I have this much fun," Yegwa said in a voice hungry with anticipation. "My magic doesn’t seem to work on you though,” she said thoughtfully. "It must be that hot blood of yours."

"What kind of spirit are you? How can you enjoy watching your victims freeze or starve to death?" Girasol asked. "You are so wicked. I don't know what's worse—you or that evil sorcerer, Magh," she shouted disgustedly.

"Magh? Sorcerer? Do tell…he sounds like someone I would like,” Yegwa asked with interest. “Is he single?”

“Single? What?” Girasol blazed. “Forget about Magh! I don’t have time for this back and forth with you.”

“Ooh, well, la-ti-da…aren’t you the peppery dish,” Yegwa said, letting loose a shrill cackle. “If I had teeth, I’d eat you right up!”

"What about my friends?" the firebird asked again. She looked around the top of the canyon walls trying to find the owner of the ghostly voice.

"You're welcome to keep company with them if you wish. I don't keep anyone imprisoned, you know," Yegwa said, trying to sound sugary sweet.

“Thanks a lot,” Girasol said sarcastically. She tapped her head with her right wing, trying to figure out a way to save her friends. “Hot blood...hmmm...Warmth...that’s it,” she realized. “If they’re going to snap out of this, they need to be warm!” she thought suddenly.

They were going to freeze to death if she did not help them soon. She remembered seeing Blue pick up some pepo seeds earlier. She searched the bag hung across his shoulder and brought one out. He was so far gone, he did not even notice her. One seed would give her enough energy for five days. “In this cold, I might need this and more to keep them warm,” she thought, while chewing the seed.
Fancast for The Blue Unicorn’s Journey To Osm

I’m delighted that one of the topics offered to me for discussion is Fancasting.  To be honest, I did have to look it up because I didn’t have an exact certainty as to what the term meant.  I was excited to find that it alludes in a skewed kind of way to the very method that I used to develop my characters, thirty something years ago, when I first started writing The Blue Unicorn’s Journey To Osm.

As has been pointed out to me quite a number of times by editors, reviewers and others, there are very many characters in my story.  The unicorn tribe alone has twelve members. In addition to those unicorns, there at least twenty other key players in the book. There are a few more unicorns, a few other magical and non-magical creatures. . .and many other characters known as “two-leggers”.

The truth is, when I first began writing the blue unicorn’s story, I was actually going for an epic fantasy novel in the vein of J.R.R. Tolkien.  But after becoming acquainted with the amazing illustrator, Steve Dasgupta, I knew I had to mind-meld with him to first bring a shorter, fully illustrated version of the story to the public.  It took about a year for him and his team to complete the 42 watercolor masterpieces (for the color version of the book) plus the 42 wood-cut look drawings (for the “read and color” version of the book) but the final products are breathtaking.  By the way, for anyone interested, the epic novel IS still in the works.

Anyway, with so many characters tramping around in my head, I desperately needed a way to keep them all straight while writing.  Not only did I need reminders for myself, but in the final outcome, I wanted readers to always be certain about whom they were reading.

The way to do that, for me, was my own made-up version of Fancasting.  I assigned a different popular actor or actress to each character in the book, effectively giving each a unique personality.  I even went so far as to create index cards for everybody in the book. I referred to these very valuable resources constantly.  The character development cards helped me consistently and clearly show how each unicorn or other character would convey individual attributes like grumpiness, sense of humor, cool under pressure and so on.  Fancasting my characters was an excellent way to flesh out subtle nuances of how each would look, sound, move, turn a phrase and so much more.

All of the actors I selected were greatly loved by the viewers of the ‘80s television programs they starred in.  Although their individual looks appealed to me, their physical attributes were not my main concern. I was more interested in their personalities and mannerisms.

Younger readers may have never viewed any of the hilarious sitcoms or action packed dramas from that time period so the names of those actors and actresses probably won’t be recognizable to them.  But here are a few just for fun:

Cornum the Brass Horned Unicorn was based on John Ritter who played “Jack Tripper on Three’s Company”.  Cornum comes across as a self-centered oaf at times but like Jack Tripper, he works hard to please who he loves the most even when it has the effect of making him look and feel clownish and uncomfortable. The whiney brass-horned unicorn provides most of the slapstick style humor in an otherwise semi-serious group of unicorns. Keywords:  persnickety, whiney, preening, klutz, slapstick, clumsy, accident-prone, loyal, caring, people-pleaser.

Style the Steel Horned Unicorn was based on Jackee’ Harry who played “Sandra on 227”. Style is big and bold and beautiful just like Sandra.  She is a unicorn fashionista who does her best to look good at all times. She’s not stingy with her magical styling talents, either, as she always tries to bring the latest unicorn fashion trends to the other fillies in the tribe.  Her magnanimous efforts are not always appreciated, though. The flashy steel-horned unicorn’s motto is “When you look good, you feel good, too.” Keywords: vamp, witty, flashy, fashionista, mile-high teased hair, wiggle in her walk.

Nix the Nickel Horned Unicorn was based on Bruce Willis who was starring as “David Addison on Moonlighting” at the time.  Like David, Nix has a unique awareness of things that can’t be seen by anyone else. In fact, that ability acts like the needle of a compass that magically points him in the direction of any unicorn in immediate danger.  With confident bravery, the nickel-horned unicorn always arrives in the nick of time to nix most any looming threat to a fellow unicorn. Keywords: confident, sensitive, witty, hero, brave, action, adventure

Alumna the Aluminum Horned Unicorn was based on Shelly Long who played “Diane on Cheers”.  Alumna is intelligent and book wise, just like Diane. She knows little about the real world because she spends most of her time alone, learning through books and the big glass orb on her desk.  She dutifully records the things she sees in the glass ball and reports them to the tribe so they look to her as mystic. The aluminum-horned unicorn exudes confidence when she speaks but inside, she is pretty insecure.  Keywords: intelligent to a fault, book wise, long-winded, eloquent, high-minded, leader, mystic

Well...that’s a little of the fancasting background of four characters from the book.  I’d love to know which actors and actresses your readers would pick to play their animated movie characters in today’s world.

Last thought on the subject:  Regarding animated movie styles, I would love to see my story come to life with animation in the vein of the 2013 The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug – with Dave Clayton as the Animator Supervisor.  I’d be just as happy if Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok’s animation team, working under the supervision of Director Taika Waititi took it on as a project. Animators of today are all supremely capable of wielding their own powerful magic.  I would be ecstatic for any of them to animate The Blue Unicorn’s Journey To Osm.

I am the author of the “Learn To Tie A Tie With The Rabbit and The Fox” series of instructional books for boys and girls. I also co-write, edit and publish children’s books by other authors, Sandi Johnson (Children’s books) and Britt Brundige (Tween graphic novel). For the older crowd, there’s a little bit of romance by Historical Regency Romance author, Gina Rose.

“Are you scared of me? Is that it?” As if to make a point, he covered the distance between us in three short steps, and backed me off into the landing to the stairwell behind me, stopping only when our bodies were a few inches from coming into physical contact. The invigorating scent of his cologne invaded my nostrils, causing my mind to go into total and complete turmoil.

I shut down, unsure how to react. I hadn’t anticipated being cornered in a vulnerable spot where we were shielded from view. Normally, I was a sucker for guys who smelled as good as he did, but this was Brandon Morris. I couldn’t decide whether to lean closer and inhale slowly, or scream and push him away.

“Are you?”

I wanted to deny his accusation, but he could see the truth in my eyes. It was pointless to pretend as if he hadn’t just sent my heart into a race. By then he could see how badly I shook. I could not disguise it fast enough for him not to notice.

“Should I be?” I asked softly, fear forcing my voice to quake.

“What have we here. A runaway?”

I can’t think. In my panic I can hardly breathe—

“Easy there.” His voice is lucid and smooth, not rough and unkind like I imagined it would be. He releases me. “I’m not going to hurt you.”

The first scattered thought that crosses my mind when I look at him is, he’s not really too different from Humans. I mean, apart from being exceptionally tall, he really could pass for a Human. His tanned face is clean-shaven, and when he smiles, dimples appear. Dark feathery hair the color of molasses curls around two pointed ears. Amusement flickers in his eyes—and for the first time I notice the strange color of them. They’re not crazy at all, the way Johnson described. They have a purple hue, soft and deep like lilacs. Never look them in the eye. One of Johnson’s many lessons. I avert my gaze.

“What are you doing outside the plantation?” His voice is not accusing but slightly curious. “You shouldn’t be out here unless you have a death wish. Correct?”

My stomach drops. Yes. He thinks I’m a slave. This could be good.

Or really bad.

I glance at the sky, think of something to say, but every Tavdorian word I’ve ever learned has decided to take a vacation.

“The sunset,” I finally say in his language. “You can get the best view from here.” It’s the weakest excuse ever, but it’ll buy me some time.

“The sunset?” He crosses his arms, and I notice how strong he is, his forearms corded in muscle.“You risked your life leaving the plantation…for a sunset?”

One swallow. Two blinks. “It’s worth it, don’t you think?” I gesture toward the sky, now turning a deep shade of crimson.

He swivels his eyes toward the sunset, then back at me. A confused smile forms on his two perfect lips, and I briefly wonder if all Tavdorians are this good-looking or if I’ve officially lost my mind.

“Alno must be lenient. Not many slaves get the privilege of enjoying a sunset.”

My heartbeat spikes. Look away. Johnson told me Tavdorians never speak civilly to Humans. It’s all orders and reprimands. So why is this one speaking to me? Why isn’t he reacting in anger at my “privilege”?

“But you don’t have to worry about a lashing from me.” The Tavdorian steps closer, and my shoulders stiffen. He’s so tall my head barely reaches his chest. If he thought I was a runaway, he could easily swing me over his shoulder and carry me to the plantation himself.

“What do you want with me?” The question comes out in a breathless whisper. I allow myself to peek up at him. He stares back, his eyes sparking with curiosity.

“Simple conversation would be enough.”

A conversation. With a Tavdorian. There’s nothing simple about that.

“You don’t need to tremble so much. I’m not going to harm you.” He waves his hand in the air. “Or tell on you for running away.”

“Thank you,” I manage to whisper, realizing after I speak the words that I just confirmed his suspicion.

“I would suggest you run with more resources, though. Food. Water.” His eyes drift over my threadbare tunic, and he frowns. “Layers of clothing, perhaps.”

“I’m fine, really.”

“Do you know how to hunt?”

I’m starting to wonder if this is an interrogation. He narrows his eyes and lowers his voice a notch. “Or are you meeting with other runaways? I heard there were two who ran from the plantation. Alno must have a terrible time keeping his fence intact.”

I can’t speak. My mouth has been bolted shut, my fear threatening to choke me.

He sighs and drags his hand through his hair. “This conversation is seriously getting boring. You can either speak to me like a civil…being. Or you can walk away and leave me hanging, wondering who the mysterious copper-haired runaway was that I met on the riverbank.”

My brain screams at me to walk away, but this Tavdorian isn’t the only curious one here.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I read the description for this book. I like science fiction, but I don't normally read many alien-related novels - so I have to admit I was a bit apprehensive and on the fence to begin with. Gladly, I was quickly and easily sucked into Lark's world and ended up really liking the book. There were a couple aspects that I didn't really care for much - the majority of the story line was about slavery, inequality, social injustice, freeing slaves, escaping, etc. I knew this before starting due to the description, but I found myself getting bored some of the time with it. I'm not exactly sure what didn't grab my attention - sometimes it felt dry and boring, and the pace felt like it was dragging along. On top of that, it felt kind of overplayed - like it was almost over the top with all of it. I'm not sure that even makes sense to anyone, but it's the best I can describe it. There were quite a few secondary characters that made the story interesting, but also confusing at times because these characters were different species and had different ranks in the society, and so on. That was another part that brought me down a bit.

On the positive side, I really loved Lark and her story. She really changes and grows into her own throughout the book, and we get to see that as it happens. I found her character easy to identify with, very likeable, and realistic. She was a great main character that I found myself invested in from the beginning and rooting for the entire length of the story. Of course, I also loved Kalen and getting to know him. He's supposed to be one of the bad guys, but Lark manages to make him open up and we see him for who he is and wants to become. I adored seeing them meet and then watching as their relationship grew and bloomed during the story. The last thing I want to mention that stood out for me was the author's writing style. She wrote from the first person point of view, with Lark as the narrator. This is by far my favorite style of writing and I think it worked perfectly for this story. We got to really know Lark throughout the book and it felt like I was going through everything right beside her. That's one trait I believe only the first person POV style can give to the reader and it always makes a huge difference for me and my reading experience. Overall, I would definitely recommend this book to fans of YA science fiction and readers who especially like sci-fi romance and alien fiction.

I spread my legs into a straddle and flattened my torso onto the floor. This was one of my favorite stretches, as it really worked on the lower back. I was rewarded with a whole bunch of snapping and popping sounds when my spine repositioned. As I turned my head slightly to the left, I saw Cai walk into the studio. My belly instantly flip-flopped.   He wore a form-fitting dark blue tank top and baggy knee length shorts. He wasn’t football player big, but he was strong-looking with wide shoulders and trim arms that were cut sharp with muscles. He looked lean but powerful, and I imagined he could do a one armed push-up with little difficulty. He looked a bit like Eddie Redmayne, but with fewer freckles and redder, wilder hair.   His gaze flicked to me briefly, then he strode across the floor and found a spot to toss his bag on the opposite side from where I was. I tried not to make a big deal out of it. He was just sitting with the other sophomores. It wasn’t like he was avoiding me altogether.   I sat up and tried to catch his gaze, but he was talking with the boy stretching next to him. It was probably a good thing, because I needed to focus. I didn’t come to this school to chase a boy. I came to be the best high-wire act the world had ever seen. I came to make my mother proud.   Suddenly the lights flickered overhead. We all looked up to the ceiling to see our instructor Miss Gisele balancing on one of the high wires. She smiled and waved. “Bonjour mes beautés.”   She walked easily across the wire, and it hardly even moved. She then stopped, bent backward, and did a walkover. When she was upright again, she went onto her toes and did a pirouette. I gaped in awe. After another wave, she let herself drop from the wire and landed in the net beneath it.   She was weightless. Like a fairy dancing on a flower petal. That’s what I wanted to do, what I wanted to be.   “Welcome to OZ,” she said, her voice thickly accented. We all got to our feet. “In my class, you will learn to find balance. Not only here,” she held out her arms to her sides, “but in here.” She tapped her head, then her heart, then her stomach.

Tawny Stokes has always been a writer. From an early age, she’d spin tales of serial killers in love, vampires taking over the world, and sometimes about fluffy bunnies turned bunnicidal maniacs. An honour student in high school, with a penchant for math and English, you’d never know it by the foot high blue Mohawk and Doc Martens, which often got her into trouble. No longer a Mohawk wearer, Tawny still enjoys old school punk rock, trance, zombie movies, teen horror films, and fluffy bunnies. I could take my discoveries to the authorities, but my own investigative methods would be at risk. Can anyone say hacking? No, it’s up to me to set things right. My objectives are straightforward. Clear the name of the vice-principal, learn the truth about my father, and stay alive. In other words, save the day and try not to look too much like a dork while doing it.

On the 5,802nd day of my existence, my safe virtual life exploded into reality.

I should have seen it coming—I’m smart enough. My name is Angel Sinclair and I’m a geek. For most of my nearly sixteen years, I’ve lived online, roaming the information highway—hacking, gaming, and manipulating the environment to suit my every whim. The Internet is my world. I control kingdoms and maintain important and critical alliances. I don’t need real-life entanglements, friendships with people who will come and go, or a boyfriend so I don’t feel alone. I’m never lonely online.

I’m not bragging when I say I’m good at what I do. When I was eleven, I broke into my school’s computer system, just to see if I could. At thirteen, I changed the Twitter profile of a well-known gamer to read “Geek Girls Rule” after he posted a particularly sexist and ugly meme about women in the tech field. Later that same year, I hacked into the local police department looking for information on my father. I’ve hacked a lot of places since then, getting better and faster each time. I’m not into cracking—hacking with malicious intent. But I’m not above a hack when I feel it serves the greater good.

My older sister, Gwen, is always getting on my case to go out, hang with people, be social off the computer. Why would I? The girls at my school are always talking about guys or taking selfies to make sure they post the best angle of themselves. Who cares how you look while you’re eating in the cafeteria? I’d rather connect with the people who do matter via my phone or laptop. Online I’ve got constant access to what and who is important, and it is way less stressful than a face-to-face conversation.

So, my plan for my senior year of high school was this—survive by keeping my head down, restricting my social life to online, and not making any waves.

Simple, right?

Wrong.

I desired invisibility but would have accepted peaceful coexistence.

Instead, they brought me war…on the very first day.
