The Writing Cave
By Lori Culwell

Here’s the deal—I am a writer who really cannot write in their office. Since I do computer and website stuff and work with clients on marketing their books, it is sometimes hard to carve out time for my own writing. I’m trying to get better about this! I have three computers in my office and entirely too much going on with emails and texts coming in every few minutes, so I usually prefer to take my computer to my car and write there, with a minimum of technology with me. There is a certain peacefulness to unplugging yourself from your gadgets for a certain period of time, especially when you’re under a deadline. Sometimes I do this a couple of times a week, and I’m definitely planning on doing it more in the new year.

When I do this, I will usually set a time for myself, because (as I’m sure other writers will attest), it’s tough to get into the “flow” of writing unless you sit down and do it on a regular basis, for a consistent period of time. I have a timer on my phone, and I will make myself write for thirty or forty minutes, even if I feel like nothing is flowing. Stephen King, in his amazing book “On Writing,” talks about the virtue of a consistent writing schedule, and I revisit that book often as well as Julia Cameron’s book “The Artist’s Way,” when she talks about doing “morning pages” to get the creative flow going. If I’m working on something like a book, I will do this more often. Writing is the car is awesome. Everyone should try it!!

  2. I don't really have a best memory of high school. I do remember enjoying my boyfriend back in 9th grade and he would meet me at school everyday and he would carry my books and walk me to class. He was very protective over me and was always there for me.

  3. I didn't enjoy high school much, so I can't really think of a favorite memory. I guess having my photographs put on display was a really good memory. Thanks for having the giveaway!

  4. My best high school memory was riding the bus to and from school. I would slip down into the seat, pulling my legs up against the seat in front of me and pull out a book. I loved having the quiet time to spend in a book.

  5. My best high school memory was preparing a float for the Homecoming parade. We had a Wizard of Oz theme and I got to dress up as Dorothy. It was a great time, the parade, the football game and the dance! Thanks!

  6. Life was so good in high school. I still love this memory: at lunchtime I laughed at something funny while drinking milk through a straw and accidentally spewed liquid on some friends
