5 Random Things About Me

When I was little, I wanted to be a baker, a firefighter, an actress, a dolphin trainer, and a magician’s assistant. I still kind of want to do all of those things, but writer is the best job of all :)

I got the idea for my contemp, The Art of Lainey, after a guy I was seeing broke up with me unexpectedly. It happened to be right after I had foot surgery, so I spent a couple lonely weeks in my apartment, using my rolling computer chair like a wheelchair and just basically being pathetic. Then I decided I was going to use my pain for something productive. Voila—Lainey was born.

I was voted most intelligent in my high school class and spent a lot of my life known as “the smart girl.” Becoming a published author was humbling, because now instead of being the only person I know who has written a book, I’m surrounded by a gazillion other authors, many of whom are both younger and smarter than I am.

If I could have any superpower, it would probably be the ability to control time. I don’t want to travel back to the time of dinosaurs or into the future to see if we ever get flying cars. Mostly I just want to give myself a few extra days when I get behind on a deadline or a couple extra hours of sleep now and then :)

I’m not going to be one of those authors you can label. I wrote a historical trilogy and a straight contemp standalone. Then I wrote a twisty mystery from a boy POV. Then I wrote a slightly sci-fi cyberthriller that I’m revising right now. Other projects “in the works” include a middle grade magical realism book, a new adult romance, an adult thriller, and a couple of possible collaborative things. I know this might make it hard to brand me, but writing is really hard and doesn’t usually pay much. What I’ve learned so far is that it’s only worth the stress if you’re writing books you truly love. What can I say? I love a little bit of everything

Fiona Paul lives in the Midwest but travels a lot since she can’t breathe if she spends too much time away from the ocean. She graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a major in psychology and spent a year teaching English in Seoul, Korea while she was deciding what she wanted to be when she grew up. Answer: everything. In addition to being a teacher and writer, she’s also worked as a saute cook, sporting goods manager, veterinary assistant, and registered nurse. When she’s not working, you can usually find her kayaking, reading, or helping turtles cross the road. Her future goals include diving with great white sharks and writing more books, not necessarily in that order. Venom is her first novel.
