Phoenix Awakens (Phoenix #1)
Author: Eliza Nolan
Genre: YA Paranormal/Urban Fantasy
Release Date: October 12, 2015

Description:

A paranormal debut about a high school senior who finds herself in a fight with a secret society for control of ancient magic.

Julia never believed in magic.

Julia Long is starting her senior year with an extra dose of crazy. The dreams of cultish, bloody rituals are weird enough, but the victim in her lifelike dreams is her new classmate, Southern charmer Graham.

Graham admits he was a Phoenix — part of a centuries old secret society — but swears he left it all behind. As Julia works with Graham to figure out why she is dreaming about his past, she's discovering she has other abilities. She heals Graham’s migraines with a touch, and there’s her superhuman strength that comes and goes. Julia doesn’t know where her new talents come from, but there’s no denying that when Graham is near, her powers kick into overdrive.

But the Phoenix Society wants Graham back. They need his blood to awaken the magic they seek, and they'll do whatever it takes to get it.

Can Julia uncover the truth behind her connection to Graham? How far will Julia go in order to save Graham and stop the Phoenixes from harnessing this powerful magic?

Why do you write?
I’ve always had a really active imagination, and I love being able to share my stories.

What is your work schedule like when you're writing?
I get home from work (my day job) and open my laptop every night for a few hours. If I’m under a deadline, I’ve been known to take vacation days from the day job and write all day, several days in a row.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
Hah! I guess we all have them. Sometimes I wear animal-ear headbands when I’m working on one of my manuscripts. It’s got a main character who’s a total quirk-job, so the animal ears help me get into her head when I write from her perspective.

Where do you get ideas for your books?
A story idea for me usually starts with a few characters and a setting in my mind. The next part is a lot of imagining possible scenarios and running the characters through them until I find out what the characters’ stories really are. Once I figure out their stories, I start to write.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
Absolutely: Each one of us has magic hidden inside ourselves.

Name one entity that you feel supported you outside of family members.
There hasn’t been just one. My writing critique group is amazing. I love them. I also have
wonderful support from the writing community on Twitter. It’s astonishing how much love you can get from 140 characters.

I also absolutely love readers and book bloggers, of course. Without your voracious appetite for fiction, I wouldn’t be able to share my stories.

Do you dream? Do you have any recurring dreams/nightmares?
I do! I love dreams. The dream world is so bendy and unreliable. What an exciting place to be! I had one dream that eventually turned into a novel length manuscript. I had another dream that was like an epic sci-fi trilogy played out before me. (I’m so bummed I didn’t write that one down!)

If you had a superpower, what would it be?
I’ve always wanted to fly. Alternately, I wouldn’t mind being able to eat as much Half-Baked Fro-Yo as I want without gaining weight. That would be an awesome superpower.

What are you working on at the minute?
I’m currently working on the sequel to Phoenix Awakens.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
Yes. *waves frantically* Hi! I’m so excited to share my story with you.

Eliza Nolan was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She lived in Charleston, South Carolina, for a few years, after which she returned to icy Minnesota - where she now lives with her two cats in a house smaller than your closet.

She is an avid reader and writer of YA. She has ghostwritten a novel or two, but also writes her own stuff, and is FINALLY getting ready (to get ready) to publish her debut young adult urban fantasy novel, Phoenix Awakens.
