The Sponsored Blog Tour: Review + Giveaway

The Sponsored
Author: Caroline T. Patti
Publication Date: September 12, 2018
Publisher: Month9Books

Description:

Don’t break the rules…

Max Winter is a janitor at a ritzy boarding school. He’s supposed to keep to himself, mind his business, stay quiet about the things he sees, sweep the floors, and under no circumstances is he to have any contact with the residents. Now, Max will break every last one of those rules when he meets Ace Valentine.

Don’t follow your heart…

Ace Sloane finds out she’s on the wrong side of a war she no longer believes in fighting. Now, she’ll risk everything to get her life back from the people who stole it, including getting too close to exactly the wrong boy.

Don’t get caught…

Grey Winter lost both parents in a fire that should've killed her as well. A “miracle baby,” Grey is sent to live with her Nana who should have told her the truth about who and what she really is. Now she’s at the forefront of a cover-up, all-out manhunt, and the object of one boy’s interest she doesn’t want or need. It’s up to Grey to connect the dots and bring an end to the secrets and lies that have caused so much pain and suffering for so long.

The Sponsored is an intriguing and action-packed novel that will have readers on the edge of their seats until the end. The book is separated into two distinct time frames - the Before and the After - both set in the future. In each of these, there are different narrators. In the After (the present day) we have Grey who can self-heal and isn't supposed to be alive considering the fire that killed both her parents and should've killed her too. In the Before, we have Max and Ace, star-crossed lovers from different sides of town who shouldn't fall for each other but do anyways. It's your basic doomed romance.

The book is full of action and romance - running from one thing or another and trying not to get caught in the process. I personally didn't exactly like that the author kept bouncing the narrative back and forth between the past and present, but I loved that she chose to write the novel in the first person point of view. Even though that means multiple main characters, we're able to form deeper connections with them because this style of writing allows us to glimpse into their hearts and minds. I really liked all three main characters - Grey, Max, and Ace. They each had their strengths and flaws, but were realistic and accessible as well. The plot was okay for me, it didn't hold my attention the way I would've liked, but that's probably my fault for getting distracted. Please remember that these are my personal opinions and have nothing to do with the novel itself. I'm sure tons of other readers are going to feel very differently than I did. I'm just pointing out that the plot didn't hold my full attention the entire time and I felt my mind wandering. I'm not going to say much else about the plot because I don't want to slip up and include any spoilers. This was a solid and  enjoyable read and I recommend it for fans of science fiction, dystopia, contemporary, and even romance.

Into the Light is the addicting sequel to Into the Dark, a young adult paranormal novel that revolves around our main character - Mercy - and her ability to Breach (jump into another person's body). I absolutely adored the first book in the series and I hated having to wait for this novel to release. Luckily, it was SO worth the wait! I loved almost every aspect of this book, which is rarely the case when it comes to sequels. There's so much that happens throughout the story, I can't begin to touch on it all - so I'm just going to say that it was an amazing ride and hope that will suffice.

All of our favorite characters from the first book are back in this novel, and we get to know each of them even better than I thought possible. Especially evil aunts and creepy twin sisters...you don't expect to feel anything besides dislike for the "villain" - but that's precisely what happened for me with these two characters especially. I loved getting to know Justice as her own person - how she's the same as Mercy on some levels, but entirely herself for everything else. She's an intriguing character and plays a huge part in the book, which I loved. Nathaniel and Gage are back - and both are book boyfriend worthy, so there's obviously a bit of a love triangle happening. It's hard to root for just one of the guys when both of them are sweet, brave, and will do absolutely anything for Mercy. The story was fascinating and had a great plot with some big twists you don't see coming. The entire story is pretty fast paced, so I ended up devouring the entire thing in one sitting of a few hours. Once I started reading, I couldn't make myself stop! I had to see what happened and how it all went down. The only issue I had was at the very end - when the big battle is going to be fought. There's only a few paragraphs describing all of it - it felt really disproportionate to the rest of the book. I wanted it to be much more detailed and to feel like I was right there along with Mercy and the gang as it went down, but it felt empty. The author definitely has the talent and ability to write out an awesome fight scene, but for some reason it doesn't happen. Lots of buildup for a not so impressive finish. Which is why I gave it four stars instead of five.

The writing is fantastic in just about every way. The book is full of vivid imagery and rich descriptions that made it so easy to slip inside the world she created. I felt as though I were right beside Mercy and the guys during the entire story. The author uses the first person point of view, which I personally love, but switches it up a bit by having multiple narrators. I liked getting to "see" things happen from the different viewpoints, because no two characters are exactly the same and may think or feel different things at different times, etc. It makes the book more interesting and fun, in my opinion, which is exactly what happened in this novel - although I would've been fine with just Mercy as the narrator. First person is almost always the way to go - I think - and this one was no exception. Overall, it was a fantastic novel and one heck of a sequel! If you enjoyed the first book, then you really need to read this one - you won't be disappointed!

Here’s a message from the author:

Into the Light is the continuation of Mercy's journey with Nathaniel's backstory mixed in. Readers will learn the history of breaching while Mercy engages in the fight of her life. What draws me to the cover are the colors. The palette is appealing and I love how it all swirls together because it perfectly captures how Mercy's two lives, one as a human and one as a Breacher, are intertwined.

excerpt
Not only am I in another body, I’m in someone else’s dead body. I can see it in the broken blood vessels around the eyeballs, the chalky blue of the lips.

It makes sense now, my attacker’s reaction. He thought she came back from the dead. She did—in a way.

This is bad. This is very, very bad.

“You’re prettier than she is,” Nathaniel says from behind me.

My eyes catch his reflection in the mirror. I flinch and spin around to face him.

I scream at him. “I’m in a dead body!”

“And whose fault is that?” He gives me a stern look.
