Immerse is the spellbinding and breathless final installment of the Mer Chronicles series where descendants of the Little Mermaid must face deadly magic, shifting alliances, and the dangers of forbidden love.

Lia can’t wait for her parents’ coronation. Now living in the sparkling palace beneath the waves, she sneaks off to Malibu whenever possible to see Clay. Tucked away in an abandoned seaside mansion, Lia and Clay devise a plan to ensure they can stay together forever.

But when an old enemy resurfaces and Lia is restricted to the palace for the safety of all Merkind, she and Clay are ripped apart once more.

She fears not only for Clay, but for her best friend Caspian, who seems to be swimming down a dangerous path. He has invited the conniving Melusine to the coronation ball, convinced she’s capable of change. And no matter how hard Lia fights it, showing up on Caspian’s arm is just the start of Melusine’s insidious return to her life.

With threats Below growing more ominous by the day and a powerful ancient ritual looming, soon the two girls can’t escape each other. As their fates grow increasingly intertwined, Melusine might be the only one who can help Lia find the answers she desperately needs to save everyone she loves and to achieve her happily ever after. But can Lia trust her?

Previous books in the series:
The library doors are my favorite in the castle. Unlike all the other doors, made of sculpted sea glass in colors ranging from pastels to deep jewel tones, the doors to the varellska (Mermese for library) are made of the coated wood of a sunken Victorian ship. Mounted to the frame between the double doors is a handcrafted mermaid from the ship’s prow, her wooden hair blowing around her in carved curls, her face proud. She puts a smile on my own face as I open one of the doors and swim into the room that may hold the answer I need among its secrets.
Shelves stretch up the walls high above my head, each lined with shells of every conceivable size and pattern, from short volumes of poetry in tiny sundial shells to hours-long research tomes in giant diadema shells. Between the shells stand various treasures for decoration: an antique spyglass, a bronze-rimmed compass, an old brass lantern. I inhale the scent of shell polish and whalebone styluses.
I’ve come on the librarian’s day off and have the whole place to myself. I swim up to the highest shelves, where there rests a large, gilded starfish, the symbol of balanced justice. What’s happened to Clay at the hands and fins of Merkind has been anything but just. I’m hoping that means justice is on our side throughout our quest to make him a Merman. I rub the starfish for luck. “Help me find a way,” I murmur into the varellska’s quiet stillness.

It’s my last day of normal, and I plan to enjoy it. While my parents are getting caught up at the Foundation, I plan to sit right here, all snuggly on Clay’s couch and not think about what’s coming. Not think about how tonight, more Merfolk from across the ocean floor will surface here in Malibu. Not think about where I’ll be this time tomorrow.

Nope. All I’m going to think about is Clay and maybe how I can get to know his lips even better. I scoot closer to him on the couch, rest my head on his shoulder, and inhale. He played me one of his new songs on the guitar earlier, and the cinnamon scent of his guitar polish still lingers. He strokes my hair, and this den—his den, with its overstuffed, checkered furniture, humming AC, and glowing television—turns into the most relaxing place in the world. Sitting next to Clay, I can forget for a few minutes that I’m a Mermaid and just be a normal girl.

“Lia, can I … can I see your tail?”

Or not.

I sit up so fast, Clay’s hand gets tangled in my hair. Ow. “You’ve seen my tail plenty of times,” I say as he works his fingers free. It’s true; he’s seen it whenever he comes over and I’m swimming in my pool with my sisters or spending time in the grottos with my parents. But now that we’re alone and there’s no water in sight, deliberately transforming into my tail just so he can look at it feels like putting myself on display.

“I’ve never seen it up close,” he says, twisting his thumb ring around in a circle. He’s right—and that’s on purpose. I’ve been making a point of keeping our alone time as human as possible. We hang out at the pier, walk on the promenade, grab sushi or burgers—y’know, normal stuff. Clay’s a human guy and I just … I don’t want … it’s a lot to take in. What if I scare him off? What if up close, he thinks my tail’s gross, that I’m gross?

Since I haven’t said anything, he pushes on. “Every time I see you with your tail, we’re around your family, and I feel like I shouldn’t stare.” He lets his fingers sweep through his own dark hair, then claps a hand on his denim-clad leg. “It’s just, it’s a part of you. This beautiful part, and … but if you don’t want to, that’s cool. If it’s weird or whatever … ”

I raise my gaze from my lap. “Did … did you say beautiful?”

The corner of his mouth quirks up. An expression I know well. “Oh yeah.”

I look down at my lap again, and he rests a hand on my thigh, the heat of his palm warming my skin through the thin jersey of my skirt. “I think you’re beautiful,” he says.

All of me? I want to ask. Even the parts that are more halibut than human?
I love my tail, but it’s always been this secret part of me, the part I have to keep hidden. How will this human boy in front of me—this handsome, patient human boy—react to seeing it up close? I guess there’s only one way I’ll find out.

Emerge (Mer Chronicles #1)
Author: Tobie Easton
Release Date: April 19, 2016
Publisher: Month9Books

Description:

Lia Nautilus may be a Mermaid, but she’s never lived in the ocean. Ever since the infamous Little Mermaid unleashed a curse that stripped Mer of their immortality, war has ravaged the Seven Seas.

So Lia has grown up in a secret community of land-dwelling Mer hidden among Malibu’s seaside mansions. Her biggest problems are surviving P.E. and keeping her feelings for Clay Ericson in check. Sure, he’s gorgeous in that cocky, leather jacket sort of way and makes her feel like there’s a school of fish swimming in her stomach, but getting involved with a human could put Lia's entire community at risk. So it’s for the best that he’s dating that new girl, right?

That is, until Lia finds out she isn't the only one at school keeping a potentially deadly secret. And this new girl? Her eyes are dead set on Clay, who doesn't realize the danger he's in. If Lia hopes to save him, she’ll have to get closer to Clay than ever. Lia’s parents would totally flip if they found out she was falling for a human boy, but the more time she spends with Clay, the harder it is for Lia to deny her feelings. After making a horrible mistake, Lia will risk everything to stop Clay from falling in love with the wrong girl.

Maybe it was when I was four, playing in the bathtub and imagining I had a mermaid’s tail.

Maybe it was when I was five, reaching out my small hand to touch the beautiful illustrations in the classic fairy tale books my mom read to me.

Maybe it was when I was six, seven, eight, swimming in my cousin’s pool and telling her we were mermaids who needed to swim to the dangerous depths of the deep end without falling into the clutches of sea monsters or witches.

Maybe it was when I was ten, turning crisp pages and falling in love with the idea of secret worlds hidden within our own—inside wardrobes or between train station platforms.

Maybe it was when I was sixteen, sitting open-mouthed and wide-eyed in art history class as I gazed up at slides of John William Waterhouse’s “Hylas and the Nymphs” and “The Mermaid.” Or when I wrote a short story for class based on his painting, “The Siren.”

Maybe it was when I was 21, sneaking down to the hotel pool in the middle of the night and kissing my boyfriend under the stars.

Maybe it was a few years ago, swimming laps and remembering those childhood hours spent pretending to be a mermaid. I thought about all the books, films, and television shows featuring vampires and werewolves, and I found myself wishing for more books about mermaids. You could write one, a tiny voice whispered. Me? I can’t write a book.

Maybe it was a few days later, sitting—once again—in the bathtub, this time with a notebook in hand. There, in the water, my pen moved furiously as I wrote the first scene of Emerge, trying desperately to keep the pages dry.
