This is a song about falling in love with your best friend, which is what happens to Mary and her childhood bestie, Nadine.

2. You Said Something – P.J. Harvey

This is a track from an album that Mary and Nadine shared in high school. It’s also a song about Brooklyn, which is where Mary and Nadine live after graduation.

3. Fade Into You – Mazzy Star

Nadine mentions, specifically, that she and Mary danced to this song at the prom.

4. I Know It’s Over – The Smiths

It seems that every time Rebecca gets into her sister’s car, Mary is listening to The Smiths. This is the song that’s playing as they drive away from Nadine’s house on Sauvie Island.

5. Where Is My Mind? – The Pixies

Rebecca definitely remembers her sister as a rebellious, reckless teenager. Every rebellious, reckless teenager I’ve ever known has been pretty into The Pixies.

6. Love Will Tear Us Apart – José González

This is a great cover of a Joy Division song. Another of Rebecca’s memories involves teenage Mary running around, for weeks, in an oversized Joy Division T-shirt.

7. In Spite of all the Damage – The Be Good Tanyas 

This is a song about trying to reconnect with someone after you’ve broken their heart.

8. Anthems For A Seventeen-Year-Old Girl – Broken Social Scene 

“Used to be one of the rotten ones / And I liked you for that.”

9. Just Like Heaven – The Watson Twins

I listened to this cover (of a song by The Cure) a lot while I was working on the chapters about Mary and Nadine. I think it’s the perfect anthem for their relationship, especially when sung by Chandra and Leigh Watson.

10. Beautiful Child – Fleetwood Mac 

This is a sad, slow song about growing up and apart from your childhood love.

11. Truly, Truly – Grant Lee Buffalo 

“I was hanging with some friends / In the parking lot one night near the summer's end.” Nadine and Mary don’t get a ton of screen time in Like It Never Happened,

but in the letter Nadine sends to Mary—the same letter that reveals to Rebecca the truth about Nadine and Mary’s relationship—Nadine recounts an important moment in a parking lot.

12. That Teenage Feeling – Neko Case 

Did Mary hold out for “that teenage feeling?” Does she love her fiancé, Jeffrey, the way she loved Nadine? Rebecca’s never sure, and Mary never gives her a real answer.
