A creak of floorboards. Violet opened her eyes just in time to see a woman lunge. She was wearing a white lace nightie, offset slightly by the gaping wound in her stomach. Violet held out her arms, pushing back with all her strength. She barely had any left, but it was just enough to keep the zombie at bay. The woman’s eyes were almost white, and her teeth snapped in Violet’s face. Though she had no idea what caused this or why it was happening, she knew this thing wanted to kill her.

Her arms were hurting, but she continued to fight. The zombie moved her head suddenly, sinking her teeth into Violet’s left arm, just below the elbow. She screamed as teeth tore through her skin.

It was worse than any pain she’d ever experienced—sharp and brutal. She kicked out, catching the woman in the stomach and pushing her back. Violet ran, clutching her bleeding arm against her chest. She had no idea where the back door was, so she ran up the stairs. When she saw the bathroom up ahead, she threw herself inside.

1) The Undertakers are based very loosely on “The Kid Kadets,” which was the name I gave to a group of kid superheroes I invented back was I was eight-years-old. True, the Undertakers can’t fly, perform telekinesis, or control the weather. But the same courage and spirit of child empowerment is remains;

2) Tom and Sharyn Jefferson were the names of the brother and sister team who commanded The Kid Kadets. Now they chief the Undertakers. Those two have been with me for a long time;

3) Helene Boettcher is my wife’s name. She’s my best friend and my personal hero and naming my heroine after her was my way of telling her that. The last book, and the series as whole, is dedicated to her;

4) Ritter is German for “knight,” a moniker which describes Will rather well;

5) Steve, Burt, and Chuck are all named for childhood friends of mine;

6) Susan Ritter (Will’s mom) is named for my sister Susan. The second Undertakers book is dedicated to her as well;

7) In Book 3, Secret of the Corpse Eater, Jillian Birmelin is named for the lovely young woman who recently married my nephew Steven and made me a great-uncle. In the same book, Lindsay Micha is named for my niece (Steven’s sister). The two of them frequently joke about whose character was more important;

8) My son, Andy, who was 12-years-old when I started writing the series, was key in helping me understand the way modern kids act and talk and think. Without him, I don’t believe the Undertakers would ever have come to life, much less been published. The first book is dedicated to him;

9) Many of the Philadelphia (and Washington D.C.) locales I describe in the Undertakers stories are real. I strongly suggest that any readers who want to experience Philly visit Fort Mifflin (Books 1 and 4), Eastern State Penitentiary (Book 2), and the top of City Hall Tower (Books 1, 2, and 5). And if you find yourselves in our nation’s capital, by all means tour the Capitol Building, especially the Crypt where Will and the Corpse Eater have their final battle (Book 3);

10) Book 1 in the series, Rise of the Corpses is being turned into a feature film. Final Destination creator Jeffrey Reddick penned the screenplay!

Despite the presence of the Reverend, or because of it, the zombies continued their pursuit. They were almost within fifty feet of what remained of our squad, and Ambrose was the only one still shooting.

“Ollie, build us a fire,” Ambrose said over his gunshots.

Ollie dove into his backpack and pulled out a firewall. He tore the plastic tube open and removed several feet of a putty-like substance. Stretching it out with his hands, he made a circle around us. He lit a match and tossed it at the firewall, igniting it.

The putty burst into a five-foot high flame that surrounded us. Zombies hated fire. They wouldn’t come anywhere near it. The firewall slowed the dead meat down, and we unloaded the rest of our ammunition into their heads, one by one. But we didn’t even make a dent; every time we killed one of them, two more appeared in its place.

“I’m out.” Ambrose dropped his M16.

“Out.” Ollie threw the two pistols to the ground.

“Down to one,” I said.

Ambrose and Ollie looked at me, surprised.

“You said to save one for ourselves.”

My friend laughed. The firewall kept the horde at bay, but it would only last so long. It was already losing strength. Once it died out, so would we.

The zombies’ red eyes got close enough to see. I hated those red eyes. Always did.

Ambrose pulled out a flare gun and fired it into the air. A last gasp effort for help. 

“Somebody’s got to see it. They’ve got to.”

“Are we close enough to Fort Bragg for anyone to see it?” I glanced at Ambrose.

He shook his head. “I hope so.” His face turned pale. Not that he could be blamed for being afraid at a time like this. If shock and adrenaline didn’t currently control my body, I’d have wet myself. Actually, for all I knew, I did wet myself.

I took off my helmet and put the pistol’s barrel against my temple. “You two make a run for it. They won’t take me alive.” More than anything, I wanted them to get away. Somebody needed to survive.

“He’s right. If he wants us to go, let’s go.” Ollie appeared more than ready to jump through the firewall and make a run for it.

Ambrose refused to listen to reason. “We’re not leaving him.”

“You want to be a hero, do it on your own time.” Ollie dashed through the firewall, leaving us alone.

“Go with him,” I said. “Please.”

Ambrose shook his head. “Give it up. I’m not going anywhere without you.”

Ollie let out a blood-curdling scream.

I turned my head, trying to get a glimpse of him, but the fire blocked my line of sight. Once the pained sounds coming from his voice faded away, Ambrose and I stared at each other. We were next. The zombies stood on the other side of the dying firewall. These were some brave corpses, standing so close to the fire. They could easily step over it.

What were they waiting for? 

Growing up, Ryan Hill used to spend his time reading and writing instead of doing homework. This resulted in an obsession with becoming a writer, but also a gross incompetence in the fields of science and mathematics. A graduate of North Carolina State University, Ryan has been a film critic for over five years. He lives in Raleigh, NC, with his dog/shadow Maggie. She had only experienced dreams toward the end of her sedation. In those dreams, she’d been running away from Scrags on legs that actually worked properly. It had been a relief to awaken in the safety of the Med Center, free of pain and without a Scrag in sight.

A week of rehabilitation was all it took to get her back in fighting form. The cocktail of drugs they’d pumped into her system had definitely accelerated the healing. The first time she’d run on the treadmill, she had started to cry tears of joy. Now, staring at her leg, she felt tears again.

The door chimed.

With a frown, she scrambled off her bed and walked over to the door. A quick glance at the screen next to the door showed Vaja on the doorstep. She palmed the primary lock and unlocked all the extra locks she’d installed to allow the door to slide open.

“You’ve got five minutes,” she said gruffly, turned on her heel, and strode to her computers. She plopped onto the old chair and turned on the newsfeed. The media was camped outside of the SWD main building, still waiting for Admiral Kirkpatrick to surrender himself to the authorities.

“Lindsey,” Vaja said in a soft, desperate voice. “Please, we can make this work.”

“No we can’t, Vaja. And why do you want it to? You’ve got how many other girlfriends?”

“This is about me leaving you that morning, isn’t it? You’re not forgiving me.”

“You mean when you left me to walk home on a bad leg after I had risked my life to
rescue someone and was in a shitload of pain?” Lindsey gave him a wide sarcastic smile. 
“Why would I possibly be mad about that?”

“Lindsey, please.”

“No, Vaja. No ‘Lindsey, please.’ You left me in more ways than one that morning. I needed you, Vaja, just not to get home, but because of what I’d been through. What the entire fuckin’ city was going through. Instead you disappeared for two fuckin’ days and then I find out you’re safe with one of your other girlfriends.”

“Okay, so maybe I should have told you about the others.” Vaja stood in the center of her small flat in his ragged, yet somehow stylish clothes with his amazingly sexy, floppy dark hair and smoldering blue eyes giving her a look that used to make her melt into his arms.

“Yeah, you think?” Lindsey shook her head and hooked one heel onto the edge of the seat of the chair. Resting her elbow on her knee, she watched the news and pointedly ignored Vaja.

“You look beautiful, Lindsey. Seeing you there with your leg looking so perfect. You’re so perfect.”

“I’m sure your other girlfriends are, too.” Lindsey ignored him and pondered making herself some coffee. But knowing Vaja, he’d serve himself and she wasn’t about to share her precious stores with him anymore.

“I always like it when you wear just your panties and tank top. It’s very sexy--”

“Stop!” Lindsey held out one hand in his direction, palm facing him. “No more. I’m done. You’re not staying here. You’re not sleeping in my bed, eating my food, or sharing my space anymore. And you’re certainly not fucking me again.”

Vaja exhaled with frustration. “Lindsey, how can you doubt my love?”

Exasperated, Lindsey stood up, opened up her clothes locker, jerked out his knapsack from the bottom and started throwing his clothing into it. “If you won’t pack, I will.”

“You really want this to happen?”

“Yes!”

“It’s because of that guy who sends you messages, isn’t it?”

Lindsey gave Vaja a sharp look.

His narrow handsome face was unexpectedly flushed with anger. “I saw you checking your wristlet. I know it’s a man.”

“It’s a fellow soldier who’s going through a rough time. He gives me small updates so I know he’s okay. Why am I telling you this? It’s none of your business!” Fuming, Lindsey shoved Vaja’s second pair of boots into the knapsack then tossed it at him. “Get out."
