It’s two weeks before Triss turns 18, and her world is about to change into the most magical one imaginable as she readies herself to enter The Witch Avenue Order… that is until her mother’s disappearance.  Instead of celebrating her transformation, she finds herself spreading rose petals into her mother’s empty grave.
When Logan, her best friend from junior high, moves back to town for college, he vows to help her find the answers she so desperately seeks surrounding her mother’s disappearance.  As they begin uncovering clues, it becomes apparent that the life of white magic they both grew up loving, is not what the majority practices, and their lives are in danger.

With a haunting feeling that her mother may still be alive, she begins to hear a call to the wilderness.  Triss realizes that in order to find the answers she needs, she must learn the ways of her ancestors and become the hunter, not the hunted before it’s too late, and she becomes part of the lonely souls.

Review:

Lonely Souls is the first book in the Witch Avenue series. It follows Triss as she comes home one night to find her mother is missing and eventually assumed to be dead. Struggling to piece her life back together - in spite of not believing that her mother is really gone - Triss has to deal with being initiated into her coven, graduating high school, and basically becoming an adult. Her lifelong friend Logan comes to her rescue and they begin the dangerous search to find her mother. Along the way, Triss becomes the target of an evil magic plot without knowing who is against her or why. Logan and Triss must find out what happened to her mother and what exactly is happening to her - before it's too late.

I love any books that revolve around witches and magic. To me, they represent one of greatest parts of reading - indulging one's imagination. The plot and storyline of Lonely Souls was not a disappointment. Evil witches who conjure spirits, curse people, and wonderful spells to boot - this book is a wonderfully witchy adventure that is also a fast-paced narrative. Not to mention the romance that is thrown into the mix. I have to admit that the romance between Triss and Logan is cliched but sweet. Triss annoyed me several times throughout the book by being too whiny about her feelings for Logan and basically trying to always "fight her feelings." It got old really fast. The issues I had with the romantic aspects of the novel didn't hinder my enjoyment of the rest of the book though. It was an exciting mix of magic, love, and mystery and I'm definitely looking forward to reading the rest of the series to see where the story will go from here.
