Book Review: Bittersweet in the Hollow by Kate Pearsall

Bittersweet in the Hollow
Author: Kate Pearsall
Genre: YA Fantasy/Mystery
Release Date: October 10, 2023
Publisher: G.P. Putnam's Sons Books for Young Readers

Description:

In this beautifully dark and enthralling YA, four sisters with unusual talents investigate a mysterious disappearance in their secluded Appalachian town. For fans of House of Hollow and Wilder Girls!

In rural Caball Hollow, surrounded by the vast National Forest, the James women serve up more than fried green tomatoes at the Harvest Moon diner, where the family recipes are not the only secrets.

Like her sisters, Linden was born with an unusual ability. She can taste what others are feeling, but this so-called gift soured her relationship with the vexingly attractive Cole Spencer one fateful night a year ago... A night when Linden vanished into the depths of the Forest and returned with no memories of what happened, just a litany of questions--and a haze of nightmares that suggest there's more to her story than simply getting lost.

Now, during the hottest summer on record, another girl in town is gone, and the similarities to last year's events are striking. Except, this time the missing girl doesn't make it home, and when her body is discovered, the scene unmistakably spells murder.

As tempers boil over, Linden enlists the help of her sisters to find what's hiding in the forest... before it finds her. But as she starts digging for truth--about the Moth-Winged Man rumored to haunt the Hollow, about her bitter rift with Cole, and even about her family--she must question if some secrets are best left buried.

Bittersweet in the Hollow is the first book in a captivating new young adult fantasy series that will have readers eagerly turning pages until the very end. It's been a while since I've enjoyed a book as much as this one. It was a lovely breath of fresh air for the genre. I really enjoyed everything about this book from the characters and the setting to the plot and the themes.

I loved Linden as the main character in the book. She's down to earth, strong, brave, smart, a loving daughter and sister, and fiercely protective of her family and those she cares about. She has her flaws, like everyone, but it only makes her more realistic and easy to identify with. I connected with her right from the first page of the book and felt like I was right beside her throughout the story.  I liked watching Linden grow and come into her own during the story. She ran into a lot of obstacles and trials she had to overcome, but ended up finding the strength within herself and relying on those closest to her. The secondary characters are all well-rounded with their own distinct personalities and traits. I enjoyed getting to know each of them and watching their lives unfold.

The plot was interesting in multiple ways. The author blended several genres together - fantasy, contemporary, folklore, romance, thriller, and mystery - to create something fresh and new. There were a lot of layers in the story but they all worked together seamlessly. I absolutely loved the magic/witchcraft that was infused into the story. How Linden's family all have special gifts or abilities and how they always refer to "the old ways." How the women in their family have always been different and how their wisdom has been passed down through each generation. I got major "Practical Magic" vibes more than once during the book, which made me smile each time. The story definitely had similarities to that book and it comes through quite a bit. I also enjoyed the thriller/mystery part of the story, especially with the folklore of the Moth-Winged Man. It kept me guessing right up until the reveal, which is impressive because I can normally guess things pretty quickly.

Overall, this was an awesome debut and a fantastic first book in a new YA fantasy series and I'm already counting down until the next book comes out. Highly recommended for fans of YA fantasy, romance, contemporary fiction, mysteries, and readers who like books about witches and magic.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

The Library of Broken Worlds Blog Tour: Review + Giveaway

THE LIBRARY OF BROKEN WORLDS

Release Date: June 6, 2023
Publisher: Scholastic Press
Formats: Hardcover, eBook, Audiobook
Pages: 448

A girl matches wits with a war god in this kaleidoscopic, thought-provoking tale of oppression and the cost of peace, where stories hide within other stories, and narrative has the power to heal -- or to burn everything in its path -- from World Fantasy Award–winning author Alaya Dawn Johnson.

A girl and a god, alone in communion ...

In the winding underground tunnels of the Library, the great peacekeeper of the three systems, a heinous secret lies buried -- and Freida is the only one who can uncover it. As the daughter of a Library god, Freida has spent her whole life exploring the Library's ever-changing tunnels and communing with the gods. Her unparalleled access makes her unique -- and dangerous.

When Freida meets Joshua, a Tierran boy desperate to save his people, and Nergüi, a disciple from a persecuted religious minority, Freida is compelled to help them. But in order to do so, she will have to venture deeper into the Library than she has ever known. There she will discover the atrocities of the past, the truth of her origins, and the impossibility of her future.

With the world at the brink of war, Freida embarks on a journey to fulfill her destiny, one that pits her against an ancient war god. Her mission is straightforward: Destroy the god before he can rain hellfire upon thousands of innocent lives -- if he doesn't destroy her first.

The Library of Broken Worlds is a complicated and intricate young adult science fiction fantasy that fans of those genres will enjoy journeying through. This book was completely different than what I thought it would be. I was expecting a mostly straightforward story that I could easily read. This story is neither of those things. It's honestly one of the most complicated books I've ever read. It's full of metaphors and difficult to follow prose. Don't get me wrong - the writing is beautiful with lots of vivid imagery. It just took me awhile to get used to it. I will admit that I had a really hard time getting into the story. Things felt overwhelming and confusing at first, until I finally got used to the writing style and could differentiate between the different characters and places. This is one of those books that is worth the work if you have the patience and know what you're getting into beforehand. I look forward to re-reading it now that I'm familiar with the story line, characters, and writing style. If you're a fan of science fiction, fantasy, or books written in prose, then I recommend giving this one a try.

Alaya Dawn Johnson is an award-winning short story writer and the author of seven novels for adults and young adults. Her debut YA novel The Summer Prince was longlisted for the National Book Award for Young People's Literature, and the follow-up Love Is the Drug was awarded the Andre Norton Nebula Award. Not So Perfect Strangers Blog Tour: Review, Guest Post + Giveaway

I am thrilled to be hosting a spot on the NOT SO PERFECT STRANGERS by L.S. Stratton Blog Tour hosted by Rockstar Book Tours. Check out my post and make sure to enter the giveaway!

NOT SO PERFECT STRANGERS
Author: L.S. Stratton
Release Date: March 28, 2023
Publisher: Union Square & Co.
Formats: Paperback, eBook
Pages: 320

Find it: Goodreadshttps://books2read.com/NOT-SO-PERFECT-STRANGERS

One fateful encounter upends the lives of two women in this tense domestic thriller, a modern spin on Alfred Hitchcock’s Strangers On A Train that flips the script on race and gender politics.

“I’m a big believer that women should help each other, Tasha,” she says. “Don’t you think?”

Tasha Jenkins has finally found the courage to leave her abusive husband. Taking her teenage son with her, Tasha checks into a hotel the night before their flight out of D.C. and out of Kordell Jenkins’s life forever. But escaping isn’t so easy, and Tasha soon finds herself driving back to her own personal hell. As she is leaving, a white woman pounds on her car window, begging to be let in. Behind the woman, an angry man is in pursuit. Tasha makes a split-second decision that will alter the course of her life: she lets her in and takes off.

Tasha and Madison Gingell may have very different everyday realities, but what they have in common is marriages they need out of. The two women want to help each other, but they have very different ideas of what that means...

They are on a collision course that will end in the case files of the D.C. MPD homicide unit. Unraveling the truth of what really happened may be impossible‒and futile. Because what has the truth ever done for women like Tasha and Madison?

Not So Perfect Strangers is a thriller that will have readers wondering until the very last pages.
This is one of my favorite genres, so I read a lot of these types of books. It takes quite a bit to perplex me anymore, but that is exactly what happened with this novel. I thought I knew what was going to happen but then the author threw in a twist I didn't see coming, which sent me reeling. I was sucked into the story from the first pages and I didn't stop reading until I had finished the last page. I ended up reading the entire novel in one sitting over a few hours. The author uses varying writing styles throughout the book - all of which I loved. There were "Before" and "Now" time periods and alternating narrators between Tasha and Madison. I thought it was a nice touch to add this extra layer to the story. Another thing I loved about the writing style was that the author wrote the entire book from the first-person point of view, alternating between Madison and Tasha. First-person POV is my favorite style by far because it allows a much deeper connection between the reader and the narrator(s). It lets me really slip into the story alongside the characters and feel like I'm right there with them. Dual first-person POV isn't something you come across very often, but I definitely think it was a perfect choice for this novel.

I don't do spoilers in my reviews, so I can't go into the plot without giving anything away. There are a lot of things that you think you know but you have no idea and the author throws in tons of twists and turns along the way. I really liked both of the main characters, Tasha and Madison, for different reasons. They're both well-rounded with very distinct personalities as well as flaws that make them realistic. I enjoyed watching them both change and grow in their own ways throughout the book. Again, I can't say much without giving anything away. I'll just say this: read it and find out for yourself. I definitely recommend this book for fans of thriller, mystery, suspense, and contemporary fiction.

Not So Perfect Strangers Playlist

Tasha Jenkins and Madison Gingell, the protagonists for Not So Perfect Strangers, are two distinct, complex women so it would only seem right that any playlist for the novel should be eclectic, representing each of them. And because this is a very women-centered novel, I think the playlist should also feature women artists.

For Madison:

Every Single Night - Fiona Apple

Bedroom Hymns - Florence + the Machine

Blank Space - Taylor Swift

You Don’t Own Me - Leslie Gore

Sacrilege - Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Smile - Maisie Peters

For Tasha:

I Never Loved a Man the Way That I Love You - Aretha Franklin

Don’t Hurt Yourself - Beyonce (featuring Jack White)

Pick Up Your Feelings - Jazmine Sullivan

Could’ve Been - H.E.R. (featuring Bryson Tiller)

Open My Heart - Yolanda Adams

Golden - Jill Scott

L.S. Stratton is an NAACP Image Award-nominated author and former crime newspaper reporter who has written more than a dozen books under different pen names in just about every genre from thrillers to romance to historical fiction. She currently lives in Maryland with her husband, their daughter, and their tuxedo cat.

Three Drops of Blood Blog Tour: Review + Giveaway

I am thrilled to be hosting a spot on the THREE DROPS OF BLOOD by Gretchen McNeil Blog Tour hosted by Rockstar Book Tours. Check out my post and make sure to enter the giveaway!

THREE DROPS OF BLOOD
Author: Gretchen McNeil
Release Date: March 21, 2023
Publisher: Disney-Hyperion
Formats: Hardcover, eBook, audiobook
Pages: 336

Description:

A Good Girls Guide to Murder meets Hitchcock in this novel from celebrated author Gretchen McNeil. A mundane office job takes a dark turn when a girl witnesses a double murder through the window.

Being an actress, Kate is no stranger to drama. And when her chance at a leading role gets cancelled, she is willing to do whatever it takes to get her acting career back on track even if that means getting a boring office job at her best friend's father's law firm so she can prove to her parents she can to support herself rather than go back to high school. Now, rather than living life on the big screen, she is stuck filing mundane contracts and watching the people in the office across from hers live their equally boring lives.

But when Kate sees things heat up between a woman and her assistant, her new source of entertainment take a turn for the worse when she witnesses a double murder. Now, she must get anyone to believe her and find out who this mystery woman is to get answers. But as she learns more and more about the circumstances leading to the gruesome act, she begins to realize there is a bigger mystery under the surface...

In this voyeuristic thriller filled with twists and turns, can Kate get anyone to believe her before she becomes the next victim?

I've read several of the author's other books and really liked them, so I jumped at the chance to read and review her newest young adult thriller. I will admit that I had some high expectations and hopes before I started reading, but the author delivered as I knew she would. The plot was edgy and full of twists but also had more serious topics mixed in. It touches on several issues including friendship, family, self-esteem and confidence, and even love. The author wove all of these together to create a taut YA thriller that will have readers on the edge of their seats.

I really liked the main character, Kate. She really grows and changes throughout the story. She starts off shy, quiet, and passive. By the end of the book she's brave, strong, and doesn't take crap from anyone. She was realistic with her self doubt and fears so I was able to connect with her right from the beginning of the book. The secondary characters were solid with unique qualities and personalities that made them pretty well-rounded. I don't do spoilers in my reviews, so I can't go into the plot that much without giving anything away. I found the first third or so of the book kind of boring for a thriller. It felt like it was giving the reader backstory and introducing the characters and not much else. But when the action started - I couldn't stop reading. I ended up reading the entire novel in one night. The writing pulls you right into the story and doesn't let go until you've finished reading the last word. The only issue I had aside from the slow start was the writing style. The story is told in the third person point of view, which is my least favorite. I almost always prefer first person POV because it allows the reader to really connect with the narrator. No other writing styles can do that for me. Even though it was written in the third person, I was still able to empathize with Kate. Again, this is a completely personal opinion on my part and has nothing to do with the writing, the book or the author. I definitely recommend this novel to fans of YA fiction, mysteries, thrillers, contemporary fiction, suspense and for fans of the author.

Gretchen McNeil is the author of #MurderTrending, #MurderFunding, #NoEscape, I’m Not Your Manic Pixie Dream Girl, Possess, 3:59, Relic, and Ten which was adapted as the Lifetime original movie Ten: Murder Island in 2017, as well as Get Even and Get Dirty, adapted as the series "Get Even" which is currently streaming worldwide on BBC iPlayer and Netflix.  You can find her online at www.GretchenMcNeil.com, on Instagram @Gretchen_McNeil, and on Twitter @GretchenMcNeil.
