Top 5 Favorite Movies

Mulan

This was the first time I saw Asian representation in main stream media. There are so many cultural things I could relate to, but I think my favorite is when Mushu presents Mulan’s breakfast of congee with eggs and bacon. I don’t think I’ve ever had bacon in my congee, but I’ve definitely had egg in it, and you can take it in many directions with all kinds of add ins.

Bride and Prejudice

I can’t explain it, I absolutely adore this movie and have watched it dozens of time. I love Pride and Predjudice (the super long BBC version with Colin Firth is my personal preference), but sometimes I don’t have the time and want my P&P hit in a shorter version and this is the playful, super fun and colorful version that is like a mug of hot tea on a cold snowy day.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding

While I’m not Greek, there were so many relatable moments I found here. That moussaka scene? I literally went through the same moment with some home made cucumber rolls when I was an elementary kid.

Encanto

I could rewatch Encanto a thousand times. I love the music, the stories, the characters – I want to BE Antonio so badly. I also LOVE Luisa. It’s such a beautiful story with so many touching moments and deeper meanings.

Barbie

I honestly think that just like The Importance of Being Earnest is an exaggerated representation of life at the time, Barbie is the movie that represents the 21st century. I never liked barbies as a kid, actually I hated all dolls (they made my uncomfortable), so I was hesitant to see the movie. When I did though, I went through the gamut of emotions and I thought it was such a poignant and important film to our generation.

Top 5 Favorite Board Games

It is a GREAT time to get into board games. There are so many types and kinds and artwork associated with them, there’s something for everyone. If the last one you played was monopoly, scrabble, or Life, (not that there’s anything wrong with them), it’s time to dive back in because it’s a HUGE world!

Skyrise

Not only was I a lucky duck and won this beautiful edition of this game, but I love how different it is as it’s kind of an auction game, but even if you lose all the auctions, you still have a chance to win the game as a whole! Also, the pieces for the edition are beautiful and fun to handle.

Settlers of Catan

This is the gateway game that got me back into board games and the wide world it is. I love a good long term strategy, where you can’t mess with each other too much.

Dog Park

Remember when I said that there are all kinds and types with all kinds of artwork? This is a great game with beautiful artwork done of various dog breeds and it’s fun to play with fun little bone pieces to play with. You get to collect, walk, and show dogs.

Clank

I love this game because it’s cuter than the usual dungeon crawling. You’ve got to go down into the dungeons to grab some fancy artifacts without waking the dragon – but you’re all a little clumsy. And then when someone makes it out, it’s a rush to make sure you don’t get buried alive underground!

Scout

Scout is a new card game I’ve just started playing and I’ll admit the first round was confusing, but the more I play it, the more complex the strategy is and since it’s kind of chance what you get to work with, I feel like it’s low stakes pressure.

Top 5 Writer Must Haves

Mood music: Lately, I’ve been into Imagine Dragons while I edit and get business stuff done. I’m finding it energizing and motivating to get my tasks moving. But, I can’t write with lyrics playing. So while I’m writing, it’s always instrumental, and lately, it’s been this fantasy instrumental list that helps me get my words in.

Beverages: At least two drinks, maybe three. Water to hydrate, something fun like tea or coffee, and a protein drink for nutrition to keep yourself going through your those writing sprints. I believe it’s known as being a drink goblin and I am definitely that.

A favorite pen: My favorite pen is the Sarasa zebra gel pen in blue. Whether it’s to make notes, write something down to remember later (like the color of a dress in a scene), a pen you love using makes it all the more lovely to do.

Favorite notebook: Now I know I can’t be the only one who collects notebooks and is usually too afraid to use them. But just like it can be a pleasure to write with your favorite pen, it’s also a pleasure to write ON your favorite paper – the smoothness, the thickness, please tell me I’m not the only one.

Furry friend: please don’t get a furry friend if you don’t already have one, or weren’t planning on getting one. Or maybe get a stuffed animal friend. I’m an animal person through and through, but I do think they make the best office co-habitators. My doggos remind me to get up and empty my bladder, stretch, and move around. I also love to grab a few treats for a quick training session for a mental break. And there’s nothing better than doggie snuggles!

Many of us readers/writers have pets and while they make great snuggle buddies and reading companions, if you’ve ever wanted something quick to do with your dog (or cat), I’ve put on my other hat as a pet professional to give you a few things to try below:

Five quick games to play with your dog:

Treat hunt: put your dog in another room, put three-five treats in little piles around your space – the easiest is in the middle of an open space, the more difficult being near furniture corners. Let your dog use their sniffer to find and eat the treats!

What do you know: Does your dog know the hand signal, or the verbal cue? Try asking for a sit – both verbally first, and then with your hand signal and see which your dog listens to fastest. This one gives you homework to know which you need more practice with.

Random tricks: Write each of the behaviors your dog knows on a cue card, shuffle them up and pull each out at random to see which you should practice. Or make it fancy by seeing how many you can do in a row!

Nose boop: Put a treat in your hand. Close your hand around it and place your hand right in front of your dog’s nose. When they move to investigate and touch your hand – open your hand and let them eat the treat! Once your dog practices this a few times, make it harder by moving your hand further away, or to the left/right, or up/down.

Good dog: Dogs don’t usually like to be pet, especially a hand touching the top of their head. But you can teach them it’s awesome! Pat your dog’s head and then give them a treat. You’re creating a positive association with touching the top of their head! You can do this with touching their collar too. Because usually, when we grab our dog’s collar, we take them away from the fun thing, so many dogs learn to shy away when a hand moves in.

Bonus: Recall: The power of your dog’s name comes from all the previous instances – and what happened after. Grab ten treats, call your dog to you, give them one from your hand and toss the second treat away from you. Takes seconds and you’ve just put five great coins into the ‘come when I call your name’ account.

Ilfair awoke at the bottom of a deep rift, in a land completely unknown to him, and noticed light snow collecting in his red hair. The moon shone down through the snowflakes which fell heavily from invisible clouds high in the night sky. He sat up, disoriented, a dim ringing still filled his fuzzy head.

He stretched his arms, rubbing them a little to warm himself. Some of the snow that had gathered on him while he slept melted and dripped from his thin hair. His wet bangs hung limply over his face, covering his light eyebrows and obscuring his view slightly. He smoothed it back away from his face and took in his surroundings. This cold, dark landscape was a far cry from his home in Fayrest.

The land around Fayrest was red and green hued from the oxidizing iron and nickel in the earth there, especially in the deepest mines of the Fenrik Hills created by the divine power of Iroin’s Runeminers. But this place was black.

As he remembered the scene from within the moon and took stock of his surroundings, panic flared in his chest again and the familiar and terrifying images of dark, eel-like creatures whispered incoherently in his mind. He closed his eyes, looked down, and took eight deep breaths to calm his heart and thoughts.

“One… two… three… four…” Ilfair focused on his breathing, counting each breath carefully to avoid the slithering whispers.

“Five… six… seven… eight…” On the last exhale, he opened his eyes, the pupils and sky-blue irises reversed, as only his could, to allow him to see clearly in the darkness that had swallowed him. His shadowsight.

The mental assault persisted but was at least manageable enough for him to take in his surroundings. All around him were unearthly black structures. Sheer and tall black rift walls flanked him. Nearer to him, eight rune-covered standing stones rose up about him like dead trees from the shiny, wet, black ground.

An itching feeling on his arm took his eyes from the eldritch mystery of the scene. He looked down at the underside of his arm, the source of the unpleasant sensation, and gasped at what he saw. Black runes spiraled and twisted on the pale underside of his exposed and lightly freckled forearm.

Known by his alien kin as Es, he fell to Earth when the skies were still dark. For ages, he burrowed beneath the surface of this simple world. But over millennia, as the weird sphere warmed and shifted, Es emerged, slithering out from beneath a rock sometime in the early 1980s. Sustained by a diet of comic books, fantasy role-playing games, and caffeine, he evolved into a sometimes-likable young man with auburn hair and freckled skin. He adopted the name Eric Scrivner and began crafting works of fantasy. Without these creations, he risks reverting to his slithering form, cursed to hide beneath some cold, lonely rock once again.

Dreams

December 17, 2021

Bangor, Maine

It was a typical teenage girl’s bedroom, if neater than most. Strips of LED lights, switched off for the evening, ran along the edges of the ceiling. The window in the eastern wall had a broad sill, upon which rested several well-tended potted plants, carefully arranged to soak up the morning sun. The posters of actors and bands were perfectly vertical and precisely aligned next to one another.

Similarly, the books and papers on the desk were stacked neatly and arranged at ninety-degree angles. The white carpet was free of clothes and freshly vacuumed. The walls were a soft pink—a color the paint store called Rose Dust.

In one corner, a pair of tangled headphones lay on top of a hastily discarded backpack, the only sign of mild untidiness. On the wall above the backpack, three shelves displayed various awards for academic achievement and community service. The trophies were meticulously polished, the wooden plaques free of dust.

The alarm clock on the nightstand read 10:00 p.m. The girl asleep in the bed looked like the proper owner of the bedroom. Like the room, she was all right angles, one knee drawn up, the other leg straight, one arm down at her side, the other tucked under the pillow. Her pajama top was white, the bottoms light pink, matching the walls and carpet. Her breathing was slow, even, and perfectly consistent. Like the backpack tossed in the corner, her red hair splayed wildly over the pillow was the only thing that suggested disorder.

An hour passed. She remained motionless, perfectly at peace.

Down the hall, her father slept less peacefully. His room was more sparsely decorated but equally tidy. A few framed vinyl records adorned one wall; an autographed bass guitar hung on another.

The bed was big enough for two, but he slept alone. A single framed photo on the nightstand showed a smiling couple on a beach—him and a woman who hadn’t slept in his bed for twelve years.

A beautifully hand-painted urn on a high shelf held her ashes.

The man often had vivid dreams. Some nights, he dreamed of his wife, waking with moisture in his eyes and a smile on his face. Other nights, his dreams were plagued by dark forms and whispered promises of perdition.

Tonight, he had no dreams. Even so, he slept fitfully. He always did. Another hour passed.

His eyes flew open at the sound of an ear-splitting scream from down the hallway. “Sara!” he shouted, as if by reflex, before he’d even come fully awake. His feet hit the floor as he yanked open the nightstand drawer and closed his fingers around the loaded pistol. He was at his bedroom door in a flash. It opened outward, and even though it was unlocked, he shouldered it open forcefully, causing the knob on the opposite side to punch a large hole in the drywall. His daughter needed him.

At a running pace, her bedroom door was only six steps away. Many thoughts raced through his mind in that brief distance.

At first, he wondered if she had merely had a bad dream, the same sort of bad dream that every teenager has once in a while. He dismissed that notion immediately. Her scream carried discordant notes of heart-wrenching terror far beyond anything that a normal nightmare caused.

Then he thought—hoped—that she’d screamed because someone had broken into the house. That seemed a horrible thing for a father to hope for, that an intruder was in his daughter’s bedroom. But he was armed, he was reasonably strong, and he’d been taking Krav Maga classes twice a week for years; so had Sara. They could defend themselves against an intruder.

Deep in his heart, he knew there was no intruder. The gun in his hand would be useless against this threat. In seventeen years, he’d never heard Sara scream that way before.

Only one thing could make her scream like that.

He reached her bedroom door and flung it open. His eyes weren’t fully adjusted to the darkness, but he could see her sitting up in bed, clutching the sides of her head as though she were suffering the worst headache imaginable. She screamed again, so loudly that he half-expected the window to shatter. He dropped the gun on the floor and grabbed her shoulders, shaking her.

“Sara! It’s okay, I’m here!”

She screamed again. Blood dripped from her nose onto her white shirt. Her eyes were screwed shut so tightly that, in the darkness, it looked like she had no eyes at all. Jesus, she’s still asleep, he thought. He shook her again, more violently, shouting her name over and over. He fumbled around on her nightstand until he found the small lamp, switching it on so he could see better.

She was turning blue. She just kept screaming, hunched over, hands clapped over her ears. He tried to move her hands so she could hear him, but she resisted with strength that seemed impossible for her petite frame. His mind raced, trying to think of how he could snap her out of it.

An idea came to him. He swept her up in his arms and jogged back down the hall, toward the bathroom. With an elbow, he clicked on the light, then gently laid her in the bathtub, careful not to bang her head on the porcelain. Hesitating only for a moment, he turned on the cold tap full blast.

Frigid water erupted from the shower head, drenching her instantly. The water was barely above freezing, liquid only because the pipes were wrapped. It had the desired effect. Sara’s eyes shot open, and she gasped in a breath, choking off another scream. She spluttered and began to thrash. She probably thought she was drowning.

Before she could hurt herself, he dragged her out of the tub and sat next to her on the floor. She blinked once, twice, three times, slowly regaining her senses. Her green eyes focused on him, and finally, she saw him.

“Dad?” Her voice was barely above a whisper.

“I’m here, baby,” he said, moving her wet hair out of her face.

She collapsed against him, sobbing. He held her and said nothing, letting her come out of it slowly. He didn’t ask what had done this to her. He knew. An icy chill ran up his spine.

She said nothing either, as though it wouldn’t be true as long as neither of them spoke it aloud.

Gradually, her sobs tapered off, and she began to shiver violently against him. He realized that she was probably freezing in her soaked pajamas. “Go get changed,” he said softly, “before you turn into an ice cube.”

She looked up at him. He could see a question in her eyes that she seemed embarrassed to ask.

“I’ll wait right outside your door,” he said.

That seemed to give her the strength she needed to stand up. He followed her back to her room, retrieved the gun from the floor, and quietly shut the door behind him as he left.

He stood in silence in the dark hallway, his eyes unfocused. He’d known this day was coming, but now that it was here, it seemed unreal.

He wept, silently, just for a minute. It would be the last time he’d allow himself to cry.

His daughter was strong, but she would need his strength as well. He prayed that it would be enough.

Tim White is an author, editor, writing coach, and game designer in Phoenix, Arizona. He started writing fiction in 1996 and nonfiction in 2006. As of 2023, he has published more than 1,000 nonfiction articles and three nonfiction books. He has written three novels, four novellas, dozens of tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) scripts, and hundreds of short stories.

Tim is a zealous crusader for the power of storytelling to promote human flourishing. He writes fiction in several genres, particularly one that he calls “Romantic horror” (as in “Romantic-era novelists” such as Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas, not as in “romance novel”). This little-known genre is unique in that it uses fear as a backdrop against which heroism is sharply contrasted, dramatized, and elevated.

Tim’s storytelling philosophy is summed up eloquently by one of his favorite authors:

“I often hear people say that they read to escape reality, but I believe that what they’re really doing is reading to find reason for hope, to find strength. While a bad book leaves readers with a sense of hopelessness and despair, a good novel, through stories of values realized, of wrongs righted, can bring to readers a connection to the wonder of life. A good novel shows how life can and ought to be lived. It not only entertains but energizes and uplifts readers.” ― Terry Goodkind

Before transitioning to writing full time, Tim was an Army combat medic, and later, a nurse paramedic specializing in trauma and surgery. He is a lifelong shooter and has ranked moderately well in state-level 3-gun competitions. He loves board games, video games, and role-playing games; cats; Pembroke Corgis; good coffee; good books; and escape rooms. He owns an escape room venue in Arizona, where he designs and builds every prop and puzzle in-house.
