Description:

Jessica Mackey is living a meticulously fabricated lie of necessity. She's left the secret tragedy of her past behind along with who she was and is forging ahead with a clean slate. Jess soon discovers that passion can't be left behind; her own and that of the one man that sees who she really is. Whose presence caresses her soul in a way that may breach the peaceful life Jess has made for herself. Devin Castile sees a young woman that is the missing puzzle piece to his existence and who is also the victim to a heinous crime. Devin convinces himself that he can remain emotionally distant even while indulging his physical desire for her. When the lies that Jess has made crumble before their attraction and the truth is revealed, one of them might pay with their life... or their very being.

Interview with Marata Eros

Q: What was the most difficult part for you when writing A TERRIBLE LOVE?

ME: ATL was my first non-fantasy work so I lacked my normal confidence. It was very challenging to stay within “normal” boundaries. For example, I couldn't just maim someone and bring them back perfectly.... they had no recuperative powers. Lol.

Q: What was the easiest part?

ME: ATL was a fresh work for me and I loved writing it. Once I got over my intimidation of writing in a different genre, I found it to be a pleasure.

Q: What is your favorite scene or was your favorite to write? Don’t forget to tell us why.

ME: My favorite scene is the first sexual encounter between Cas and Jewell. Jewell is broken from denying her identity for so long and Cas honors her by telling Jewell not what she wants to hear, but what the truth is as he sees it. Jewell recognizes his sincerity and it begins to heal her. I love fractured people finding a way to become whole. Writing about perfection makes me want to weep with boredom. Writing about people transcending their despair to find joy is the reward in writing a novel such as ATL.

Q: Creating the characters of Cas and Jess; what surprised you the most about each as time went along?

ME: I didn't think Cas was capable of loving Jewell, I was surprised by his depth. In the companion novel, A BRUTAL TENDERNESS, it will come to light why he's such a contradiction of terms. ATL is really about two people that were meant to be together and even the circumstances they find themselves in aren't enough to stop that truth. I kept writing one challenge after another, and with each one it only served to draw the couple closer though every obstacle stood in their way. It made the ending all the sweeter.

Q: The sequel is A BRUTAL TENDERNESS. Can you tell us a little about it?

ME: Actually, ABT is a companion novel told from Cas's perspective. A TERRIBLE LOVE is a stand-alone. I'm hoping readers will love where ABT goes! It is 25% longer with 5-6 bonus chapters of brand new material that occur between where the story ends and where it picks up a year later. I was able to tailor ABT a little for those readers that wanted more story and more “why.” Be prepared! There are three big reveals in ABT in addition to a male who reads like one. You will not be “hearing” ABT as a retelling of ATL with Cas sounding like a female “voice.” Cas is all-male and it might be shocking for some readers to “hear” Cas. Is he tender? Yes. Is he brutal... yes. The two are not mutually exclusive. I have four sons so I know how to make a character sound male, it's a definite advantage.

Q: Is there anything in A TERRIBLE LOVE you hope readers take away after reading, or something you want to point out you don’t want readers to miss?

ME: Hope. ATL is a novel about overcoming tragedy for love. I want my readers to feel that no matter how dire circumstances become, you can fight another day. No one else defines you but you.

  4. The book blurb doesn't really tell much about the book. It's kind of obscure. Like is she in college or working? Any hint to what tragedy she left behind? I don't know. I think the book blurb should be a tiny bit more specific to get me hooked. That book cover, on the other hand, is gorgeous and totally makes me want to read it!
