Katharine Fun Facts
Five things The Dark Unwinding and A Spark Unseen
will NOT tell you about Katharine Tulman:
*Katharine found a miniature portrait of her mother once, in
the back of a drawer in Aunt Alice’s bedroom. Her mother was wearing an emerald
green dress. The first room Katharine redecorated at Stranwyne had this color,
and she deliberately chose the same green velvet for the dress she had made for
the Emperor’s ball.
*Katharine stole this portrait from Aunt Alice. Or perhaps
not, since it was probably her own to begin with…
*Katharine taught Uncle Tully to wait for twenty by having
him count the spins of an imaginary flywheel in his head. It took them four
months to agree that the flywheel was turning at 3 1/2 revolutions per second.
*Katharine’s favorite way of getting rid her overly
watchful, ever-present chaperone at Stranwyne was to ask Mary to dust the
bookshelves, where a copy of Jane Eyre would left out and open to Mr.
Rochester’s confession of love for Jane. Mary would not be seen again for some
time, and neither would Katharine or Lane.
*Katharine loved Lane the first time she saw him sleeping on the floor
beside Uncle Tully. She knew she’d never stop loving him right after she hit
him with a brick.
