The Kill Order (Maze Runner #0.5)
Author: James Dashner
Genre: YA Science Fiction/Dystopia
Release Date: January 7, 2014 (paperback)
Publisher: Delacorte Press
Description:
The prequel to the New York Times bestselling Maze Runner series—The Kill Order is a modern classic for fans of The Hunger Games and Divergent. It can be read alone or as a companion to the action-packed series.
Before WICKED was formed, before the Glade was built, before Thomas entered the Maze, sun flares hit the earth and mankind fell to disease.
Mark and Trina were there when it happened, and they survived. But surviving the sun flares was easy compared to what came next.
Now a disease of rage and lunacy races across the eastern United States, and there’s something suspicious about its origin. Worse yet, it’s mutating, and all evidence suggests that it will bring humanity to its knees.
Mark and Trina are convinced there’s a way to save those left living from descending into madness. And they’re determined to find it—if they can stay alive. Because in this new, devastated world, every life has a price. And to some, you’re worth more dead than alive.

Praise for THE KILL ORDER:
“A must-read.” ―Shelf Awareness,
Starred
“A clever prequel that will appeal to fans…while enticing those unfamiliar with the later books.” ―Publishers Weekly
“A gritty and
unnerving look at a postapocalyptic world that both recalls early
classics of the genre and looks forward to Dashner’s already established
trilogy.”
—Kirkus Reviews
I
think it was a lot of things from my entire life of devouring pop
culture that came together to inspire me. But two books stand out in
particular:
Lord of the Flies and Ender's Game. You can see those influences in the story pretty easily. The TV show
Lost was also a huge inspiration.
2. Did you have to do any special research for the series?
A
lot of it came from stuff I enjoy reading already, speculation about
developments in science and technology, world climate stuff, etc. But I
did dig deeper
on topics that I wanted to make as authentic as possible within my
story.
3. Are any of the characters based off of people you know?
No,
not really. I can't help but trickle in bits and pieces of every person
I've ever met, but I never base a character completely on someone I
know. My books
would be way too boring!
4. How did you come up with the idea for your newest series, The Eye of Minds?
It's
hard to ever answer that most common question of where I get ideas, but
this one had some definite seeds planted by movies that I loved. The
first was
The Matrix, clear back in the 90s. I kept thinking there would be a twist in those films that never happened. That stuck with me. And then
Inception also really struck me, ironically with the idea of a dream within a dream within a dream (appropriate for this blog!).
5. How many books do you have planned for The Mortality Doctrine series?
It's fully planned out as a trilogy, but I actually have ideas for further stories within the universe. But for now, it's three.
6. How did you become a writer? Was there a person or situation that prompted you to start writing?
I've
been one my whole life, I guess. I still have copies of stories I wrote
when I was eight-years-old. Granted, they were lame, but I've been
doing it ever
since. But I think the single biggest thing that turned me into an
author was my love of books and reading, something that I got from my
parents.
7. What tips do you have for aspiring writers?
Two
things: practice, a lot. Try your very best to write each day. The act
of writing, all by itself, makes you better. Also, go to conferences
designed for
writers (there are a lot of them). That will improve your craft, as
well as help you meet other writers, editors, and agents.
8. What's next for you?
2014
will be all about making the sequel to The Eye of Minds (called The
Rule of Thoughts – out August 2014) as good as possible, as well as
promoting the
movie, coming out in September. It's going to be a fantastic year!!!
