High school was the worst time of my life. I was bullied for being an outsider. I was a poor kid at the rich kid school, a hardcore science nerd, that weird girl who wrote song lyrics on her sneakers before writing on your sneakers was a thing. My hometown is Middle of Nowhere, New Jersey, a small, remote village in the middle of the woods. Nothing ever happened there. Nothing ever changed. I felt completely isolated and alone. I had a group of friends, but I didn’t really feel connected to them. I felt like no one understood me and that I wouldn’t find my people until after I left for college.
Books were my real friends. And the characters in them were my people.
I started thinking seriously about writing a teen novel in seventh grade. That’s when we had the read The Outsiders, the only book I had to read for English in six years of junior high and high school that I actually loved. I immediately related to those boys because I was an outsider, too. My goal was to one day write a teen novel that would help make other teens feel less alone the way that book helped me. I wanted to reach out to teens and let them know that they were not alone, they were understood, and that each of them could create the happy life they wanted to be living.
Around the same time, I knew I was going to be become a science teacher. Not just that I wanted to be a teacher. That I would be a teacher. My destiny was crystal clear and I couldn’t wait to get started. But those six years of junior high and high school were the longest years of my life. Every minute felt like an hour, every hour felt like a day, and one day could feel like a year. The thing that helped me survive the most was hope. Hope that one day I could turn my big dreams into reality. Hope that, if I just kept holding on, I would eventually get to live in New York City where I could be the best version of myself. Where I could be happy and free and create a shiny new life that wasn’t defined by my past. That is the life I am living now. And I am grateful every day that I never, ever gave up.
I resigned from teaching in 2007 to become a full-time author. I absolutely love what I do. Of course I also loved teaching, but I can reach many more teens as an author than I could as a teacher. Contemporary, realistic fiction has always been the genre I related to the most as a reader. I try to write the same kinds of YA novels I would have wanted to read as a teen. Hopefully the books I write are reaching out to teens and inspiring them to dream big, never give up, and reassuring every single one of them that they are not alone.
