“She has no face,” she gasped.
 
“What?” Simon slumped in uncertainty.
 
Mary Rose scrambled away from the chair, toward the stairs, and he fell back. “My God . . . Why don’t I have a face?”
 
The room went black.
 
He heard the chair clatter to the ground, skid across the floor.
 
Simon cursed, fumbled with his phone in the dark to see what he’d done. It showed a 0 percent charge and then even that faint light shut off completely. He’d somehow burned through a quarter charge in less than five minutes.
 
“Mary Rose . . .” He glared around the room blindly, the dimmest of light in one corner showing where the steps must be.
 
“Mary Rose?”
 
He needed to find her, to take care of her, protect. Couldn’t fathom what she must be feeling now. The memories. The horror.
 
The room had grown colder. And he could suddenly feel all the pentagrams and snakes and stick people on the walls, skirting closer in the darkness. “Mary Rose . . .” He called out again, and his voice had sounded chillingly fragile.
 
“It’s okay,” her stronger voice floated back. “I’m right beside you.”
 
Simon froze, his eyes staring wide but seeing nothing—nothing at all. Or, rather, something enormous now squatted in the farthest corner of the room. Impossible. He saw nothing. It was a darkness so complete, it was like he was the one blindfolded, he was the one captured, hidden away in the ground.
 
Something touched his hand, and he flinched.
 
Mary Rose.
 
Her fingers wrapped around his wrist. Cold and skeletal in the dark. He grimaced in the void, ashamed at what had been the best word to describe the feeling.
 
“Don’t be afraid,” she said. “I know where we are now.”

I'm at a loss right now about how to review Mary Rose. There were definite pros and cons for me, but my mind is still reeling and trying to process everything that happened and/or possibly happened. That probably doesn't make sense, but if you'll read the book I think you'd get it. I'm just going to break it down so I can keep my thoughts straight.

Pros: 
Plot: The plot was incredible. I found it complex and layered and it had so much happening that it still makes my mind spin. But that's part of what I loved about it. I guess you could categorize this novel as mystery, suspense, and/or horror - but it's honestly an unique blend of all three. I don't do spoilers in my reviews, so I can't go into the plot and all of my questions without giving anything away. Which makes this extra hard. I'm just going to say that there were several twists and turns you don't see coming and completely blindside you. You'll think that you have an idea of what's happening or the truth of the past - but you don't. Trust me. There were several story lines that wove together into the overall plot of the novel in a way that captured my imagination and my heart. I never thought I'd also describe a horror novel as having a romantic aspect, but this one definitely does and makes up a big part of the story (in my opinion).

Characters: The characters were well rounded and fascinating - especially Mary Rose and Simon. Obviously the story focuses on Mary Rose (hence the name) and we get to know her pretty well throughout the book. Not as much as I would have liked though. (See my comment below on writing style.) She was layered and had a lot going on, and I really wish we got to connect with her on a deeper level. I loved watching Simon and Mary Rose's relationship change and grow over the length of the novel. The secondary characters - namely Mary Rose's parents - were decently complex with their own flaws and issues that are exposed throughout the book.

Cons:
Writing Style: This is always a huge point for me and one I almost always touch on in my reviews. My preferred style is the first person because of the deep connection with the narrator. The author wrote the story from the third person, alternating between Simon and Mary Rose. I liked getting to see things from each of their perspectives, but I couldn't connect with either of them as much as I wanted. I truly believe that if I could've identified more with Mary Rose - or even Simon - I would have had a different and probably better experience. I understand why the author chose to write the book this way and it does make sense with the story, it's just my own personal preference.

Pace: There were times throughout the story that seemed to drag on without anything happening. These periods made my mind start to wander and took me out of the world the author created. It felt like it took too long for things to actually happen during the story - and when it did, it was just a snippet of something. Until the last third to quarter of the novel, when things finally took off full speed and everything came out. It doesn't seem like this makes sense, and it might not to other readers, but that was my take on the pacing.

Overall, this was an original and fresh novel that mixed together several genres to create something new. I really enjoyed most of the book, but there were issues that made my experience less than I hoped. I do recommend it for fans of horror, mystery, suspense, thrillers, and paranormal.

She watched.

It was her job to watch, but Violet would have watched anyway. She leaned over her keyboard, slinging her body so far forward that her nose almost bumped the screen. Her heart was jumping around in her chest. She could feel the sweat pooling in her palms.

The short, dirty person zipping across the picture on her monitor was named Tommy Tolliver. His nickname was Tin Man.

Violet knew those things because the data showed up in a small square box next to his face on the screen. The information only stayed for a flicker of an instant before it was updated, but that was long enough. In livid orange letters, the box told her that he was sixteen years old and really, really scared.

So scared that he was running as fast as he could through the twisted filigree of streets on Old Earth. So scared that his pulse rate was leaping up and up, and his thoughts were a crazy gray tangle.

The cop who was chasing him was named Danny Mayhew. Violet didn’t need a box next to his face to tell her that. Which was a good thing, because there wasn’t one. The Intercept didn’t track cops. It only kicked in for the bad guys. Not the good guys.

Tin Man was fast. But Danny was also fast. In fact, Danny was a tick faster. Which meant he was catching up.

Violet sucked in a deep breath. She didn’t let it out again right away. She was too focused on the action in that strange and distant place to remember to breathe. When she did remember, the breath came out as a frustrated sigh. She used her thumb to flick impatiently at a triangular slice of dark blond hair that had drifted onto her forehead.

Oh, Danny, she thought. Not again. What are you doing down there, anyway?

Tin Man swerved into a filthy alley. It was always raining on Old Earth. Or at least it seemed to be on those not-very-frequent occasions when Violet was required to look down there. The rain draped the place in a greasy sheen, slickening the bricks.

Tin Man’s luck suddenly left him.

The Dark Intercept is a bold and imaginative first book in an exciting YA science fiction series that fans are definitely going to love. The plot of the story was very in depth and original, which is hard to come by anymore. I really liked learning about this future the author created and about both the New Earth and the Old Earth. And then there's the whole Intercept topic, which is a huge part of the story. I loved learning about the Intercept - how it came to be, what it does, what it's supposed to do, and what it can be capable of, among others. It really made me sit back and think about what life would be like if something like this was in our world today. It's a fascinating and horrifying thought and one that can be argued for both the positive and the negative. I'm looking forward to learning more about the Intercept and the world the author has created for the series.

The characters were pretty well rounded with distinctive traits and flaws, which made them realistic. I had a personal issue with the writing style, however. I strongly prefer the first person point of view, and this book is told from the third person. I never seem to connect with the characters as deeply (or barely at all) when the writing isn't done in the first person. It's my own quirk and has nothing to do with the author's writing or the book itself. Just my personal preference. But it always has a pretty big impact on my reading experience, and this was no exception. The plot was full of action, suspense, and tons of questions. Eventually, the answers are given to us - so there really weren't any big cliffhangers (which I'm grateful for). I thought the main plot of Danny and Violet along with their secrets was interesting and I liked watching them work through everything together while watching their relationship grow and change. Overall, I think this was a fantastic start to a promising new series that fans of science fiction and dystopias are going to want to pick up.

In the darkness ahead, strange noises, squeaks like fingers sliding on a steel guitar—times a thousand—cut through a fluttery sound. Beating wings.  

Crud. Rhonda threw her arms over her head and ducked. “Bats!” 

Selena screamed. 

The shrillness ricocheted off the walls and assaulted Rhonda’s ears. “Get down.” Didn’t they know bats moving in a group couldn’t use their natural navigation? “And turn off the flashlight. 

Curtis tossed the torch down and hunched in front of her. As the sound grew louder, he turned and put his arms around her.  

Omigosh, omigosh, omigosh. They were under attack by a bat colony and the only thing that mattered was Curtis Vanhouten had his arms around her. Well, not under attack, but close enough. The noise swelled as the bats flew overhead, the vibrations from the thrusting wings bounced off their hunched bodies. 

When they had passed, Selena whimpered. “Can we get up yet?” 

Rhonda peeked into the surrounding darkness. “I don’t know.” The sound decreased as the bats flew farther away. “We came from that direction, unless they go out the trap door, how will they get out?” 

Goodness. What if they went flying through the school? Would the FBI break their pact to stay out if they saw a bat cloud flying past the windows? 

The peeping sounds grew louder. “They’re coming back. Stay down.” Were they going to wind up crouched on the tunnel floor in waning light from the torch while being dive-bombed by bats all day? The cloud flew overhead and back through the tunnel. The crew waited in case they came back. 

Rhonda uncovered her head and strained to hear any noise through the silence. Nothing. “I think they’re gone.” 

Curtis let his arms fall to his sides. Then he reached for the torch and held it up again. 

She stood. In the dim light she saw Dennis had covered Maddie in the same way Curtis had shielded her. Well, it was nice while it lasted, whatever the reason. 

Selena clung to James’s arm. “We’re going to follow the bats?” Her voice rose to a squeak. 

Rhonda put one hand on her hip. “You can always go back to the Dungeon.” 

“No.” Selena straightened. “I’m going with you.” 

Curtis faced forward. “Let’s go then.”
