Warm air flowed over her outstretched wings. Her eyes widened in
wonder as the turquoise waters of Merryne stretched out to the horizon
before her. She glided in a lazy circle, waiting for Axel to catch up.
In the distance, a chain of tiny black islands peeped above the surface
of the water to form a crescent. Those islands were the only land as far
as the eye could see.
Axel pointed to a spot directly below
where a cluster of large metal containers floated on the water. It had
the appearance of a cluster of boxes that were lined and stacked
together. Jade flicked her tail and tucked her wings to follow Axel as
he dove towards it.
When she landed on the platforms that ringed the structure, the ground moved under her feet.
“Pontoons,” Axel explained. “The Traveller base is made of converted containers joined together and floating on pontoons.”
“It’s even uglier up close.”
Axel
chuckled. “It was only supposed to be temporary—the Myr didn’t want
anything permanent built here—but with all the trouble the Myr rebels
have caused during the resort build, the base has only grown.”
Axel
adjusted the bag hanging from his chest harness, glancing around.
“Let’s go. If we stand here any longer, someone will come asking
questions.”
As though summoned by his words, Jade saw a figure out of the corner of her eye and couldn’t help but look over her shoulder.
It was as though something clamped around her neck, cutting her airway mid-breath. She stared.
The
figure stared back. Though he was at the other end of the platform,
Jade saw his face clearly. Cajun’s stubble of buzzed blonde hair was
barely visible, even in the light, and there was a rosy tinge of sunburn
over the fair skin on his face. The sleeves of his black uniform were
rolled up to the elbow.
Cajun’s eyes widened as he saw her. His trademark smirk was absent, and his glare was full of anger and threat.
Jade’s heart pounded in her chest. She stumbled after Axel, expecting Cajun to call out. But he didn’t.
Jade tugged on Axel’s hand, but when Axel looked around, Cajun had disappeared.
“What?” Axel asked.
“I thought…Cajun…”
Axel frowned. “It’s only natural to think we see what we’re afraid of,” he replied, but they picked up their pace.
It was only when they’d passed into the artificial yellow light of the base that Jade found she could breathe again.
