Magic Harbor (Keeper of the Watch #2)
Author: Kristen L. Jackson
Genre: YA Urban Fantasy
Publication Date: October 10, 2019

Description:

When Alyx Eris convinced him to become a keeper of the watch, Chase Walker knew he gained the ability to traverse the twelve dimensions.

He knew there were others—the hunters—who would do anything to put an end to the watches’ existence.

He knew his status as a keeper was completely binding until his nineteenth birthday.

Most importantly, he knew he’d be spending the year by Alyx’s side.

What he didn’t know was that in this dimension resides a ruling mage that poses more of a threat than the hunters ever could.

He didn’t know that magic-born hybrid beasts lurk in every corner of the surrounding forests.

And he didn’t know that nothing—and no one—is what it seems in the mystical world of Dimension 8.

In the early afternoon on September 6th with the sun beating down from a nearly cloudless blue sky, heat so thick each step was like wading through a pool of molten lava, Chase discovered his strength in magic.

They’d moved to the backyard to avoid unnecessary breakage inside, and had been practicing hard all day. Fatigue cloaked his entire body like a shroud. Despite the weariness, his limbs practically thrummed with the power of his last spell. He wanted to sleep for days and run a marathon at the same time.

“Wow,” he breathed.

“Yeah. Just, wow,” Alyx echoed. “Think you could do that again?”

Liz interjected, “If he could do it once, he can do it again—now that he knows how.”

“That’s incredible. I’ve never seen anything like that before,” Alyx whispered.

Dawn stood, wide-eyed. “Me neither.”

Alyx considered her words. “Why couldn’t I do it? We both said the same words, but it worked differently for him than for me. Why?”

Liz titled her head. “Each person has unique abilities. I understand you excel at portal spells? That’s your strength. Dawn’s strong point is shield spells. Ty’s is fire. This spell is Chase’s strength. It sort of chooses you, I guess. I’m not sure how else to describe it. It’s something in your genetic make-up that allows you to connect more completely with some spells over others.”

Chase cocked his head, staring intently at Liz. “What was your strength? When you were practicing magic, I mean.”

Ignoring the question as if she hadn’t heard his words, she continued, “Now you just need to hone these skills. Keep practicing. We still have 40 minutes before we have to leave.”

“I’m okay with that.” The smile flashed as he raised his arms. “And after practice, I’m gonna need about twenty burgers and a gallon of Gatorade. And a nap. I’m hungry, hot, and tired. In that order.”

His dimples only deepened when Alyx rolled her eyes. She turned to the other

woman. “Let’s meet up again in a few hours to continue practicing. We can practice on our own now that you’re here, Liz.”

“We’ll need a place to practice where the townies won’t see,” she answered, a thoughtful look in her eyes.

Alyx smiled. “I’ll portal us to the woods from our hotel room. No one will see us there. Then, we’ll portal back when we’re finished. It’ll be good practice.”

Chase agreed. “Good thinking. But first, let’s eat.”
