Description:

With the warmth, wit, intimate friendships, and heart-melting romance she brings to all her books, Emma Mills crafts a story about believing in yourself, owning your mistakes, and trusting in human connection in Lucky Caller.

When Nina decides to take a radio broadcasting class her senior year, she expects it to be a walk in the park. Instead, it’s a complete disaster.

The members of Nina's haphazardly formed radio team have approximately nothing in common. And to maximize the awkwardness her group includes Jamie, a childhood friend she'd hoped to basically avoid for the rest of her life.

The show is a mess, internet rumors threaten to bring the wrath of two fandoms down on their heads, and to top it all off Nina's family is on the brink of some major upheaval.

Everything feels like it's spiraling out of control―but maybe control is overrated?

PRAISE FOR LUCKY CALLER:

"A well-crafted, bittersweet comedy of errors filled with realistically flawed characters and taut, witty dialogue." - Publishers Weekly Starred Review
 Book Playlist

I love listening to music while I’m writing, and since LUCKY CALLER is in part about a student radio show, I wanted to highlight some songs I listened to while working on this book.

“Getting Along“– The Magic Gang

When I’m drafting a book, I usually have a go-to song to kick-off my writing sessions. For LUCKY CALLER, this song was “Getting Along” by the Magic Gang. This song has a light, fun, bouncy kind of feel musically, but the lyrics themselves are a little heartbroken—the narrator sings about having parted from someone, missing that person, and being with them only in dreams. I love the juxtaposition of the sound and the message of the song, and wanted to convey a similar vibe in LUCKY CALLER. It’s a fun and light story, but there are also some more emotional/slightly weightier elements to it.

“Pretender” – AJR
This is a song about someone who is a bit insecure, who just wants to fit in and be liked, almost at the expense of their own personality. I think protagonist Nina has experienced this to a certain degree, which is especially illustrated in some flashbacks to her experiences in junior high.

“I Miss You” – Julia Michaels

I love having songs to fit with particular moods when I’m writing, and this song was a great fit for the angstier romantic moments of LUCKY CALLER. Nina really regrets something that happened in her past with Jamie, and the lyrics of “I Miss You” definitely capture the spirit of that kind of regret and longing.

“The Sign” – Ace of Base

Since the radio program that Nina and her group work on is 90s themed, I had to include some 90s jams on my playlist! “The Sign” by Ace of Base was one of my favorites as a kid, and still today.

“Tearing Up My Heart” – NSYNC

In fitting with both the 90s theme and the boyband elements that occur in LUCKY CALLER, I had to include an NSYNC classic!

“Oklahoma” – Wild Child

I love the band Wild Child, and listened to a lot of their music particularly while writing my third book, FOOLISH HEARTS. The vibe of their music is just really soft and lovely. “Oklahoma” is a song that I think captures the tentative romance as well as the burgeoning family relationships in LUCKY CALLER really well. Nina’s a little afraid to open up and to let people in, but she learns the joys and heartbreaks of doing so over the course of the book.
Emma Mills is the author of First & Then, This Adventure Ends, Foolish Hearts, Famous in a Small Town, and Lucky Caller. She lives in St. Louis, Missouri, and has recently completed a PhD in cell biology.
