Describe your current writing/creative space AND…
PT: I have a room in my apartment. A drawing table I don’t use (I never have time to draw) and a table with my computer and a bookshelf. LOTS of original comic book art on the walls. Bookshelves filled with comp copies from various projects of mine, and further stacks on the floor. Don’t look too close because I’m not good at dusting.
CC: I work mostly in Helioscope, an office space that I share with a couple dozen other comics creators in downtown Portland. It gives me the ability to keep my work life and home life at least somewhat separate, and we’re all a big weird family of artists. I had to give up going there for more than a year because of Covid, and a lot of the other members are still working from home, so right now it can feel lonely in there sometimes.
Describe your ideal writing/creative space.
PT: My ideal changes from day to day, but it always has a water feature, whether that’s a stream running through the room, an adjacent pool, or it’s right on the ocean. Immortal plants would be nice, too.
CC: The same place I do now, except with Covid a distant memory so I can see all my dear friends on the regular.
Describe your ideal home library.
PT: Shelves actually built for books! So many bookshelves are weeeeak. I need shelves that can handle a row of art books, odd sizes, etc. And the shelves should be deep enough that I can put statues and plants on the shelves along with the books. Also, there needs to be climate control, and a Very Nice attached apartment, where the talented person who organizes and cleans the shelves can live.
CC: It’s not very
nifty to say, but I’m kind of committed to reading digitally, so my
ideal library is a nice big hard drive full of romance, fantasy and
sci-fi novels, with a dependable cloud backup and a touch screen with
good resolution!
Paul Tobin is the New York Times best-selling author of
the Plants vs. Zombies graphic novels, as well as a wide range

Birds, and for Marvel’s all-ages “Adventure” line, and

novel, and with his Plants vs. Zombies artist Ron Chan for
their recently released Earth Boy graphic novel. Along with his
wife, artist Colleen Coover, Paul is the creator of the multiple
Eisner-Award-winning Bandette comics featuring the antics of
the world’s best—and most charming—thief. Paul and Colleen also teamed up on
their Banana Sunday graphic novel, and now as the writing team
on Wrassle Castle. Paul lives in Portland, Oregon, where he
feels that it rains frequently enough, but not hard enough.
