Something cool happening in Ferrous City? Not a chance.

Until one day...when self-proclaimed genius inventor Ethan Fairmont runs into an abandoned car factory to avoid a local bully and accidentally stumbles across his ex-best friend Kareem, new kid Juan Carlos, and an extraterrestrial visitor. Cheese (the alien) is stuck on Earth in need of some serious repairs, spicy snacks—and absolute, total secrecy. That’s easier said than done when mysterious agents descend on Ferrous City to search for Cheese. With time running out and their family and friends in potential danger, can Ethan, Kareem, and Juan Carlos pull off an intergalactic rescue before they’re all found out?

E.T. meets Stranger Things in the kickoff to Nick Brooks’s middle-grade series that weaves contemporary issues of racial profiling, industrial community struggles, and everyday life in a fast-paced out-of-this-world adventure.

Review:

“An inventive story with a lot of heart.” — Kirkus Reviews

Lots of action packed scenes in this one but I’ll try to narrow it down to my top five!

1. “The Opener” – The opening scene is definitely one of my favorites because we immediately get a sense for Ethan’s voice. Right from the start, readers will be thrown into the fun and adventure of Ethan’s world because his Handy-Bot fiasco is so typical of the character. Then, we balance Ethan’s wackiness with the seriousness of his mother and I think throughout the book, we’re constantly walking that line, which makes the opening scene a perfect way to frame our story.

2. “Close Encounters” – Ethan and Juan Carlos encountering the giant orb for the first time is a great scene to me. I love how in this fun, wacky story, we start to feel elements of danger and suspense. It’s one of those pivotal scenes where we get a glimpse of what our main character’s journey will be, and in any story, that’s when the real fun begins!

3. “Cheese’s Movies” – A super important scene is the one where Cheese shows his new friends where he’s from and how his ship crashed on Earth. I really enjoy this scene because of how visual and cinematic it feels. We get to see Cheese’s extraterrestrial technology on full display and of course, this is the thing that leads Ethan to cracking the code on how to help Cheese get home.

4. “The Talk” – This is one of the more emotional scenes of the book where Ethan’s family sits down to have the conversation around policing in America. It occurs just after the jolting experience Ethan has with the cops that show up to his house looking for Cheese. I love this scene because we tackle a very serious subject in a way young readers can connect to. If “the talk” isn’t a conversation children are having with their parents, this scene may serve as a great jumping off point for families across America.

5. “Teamwork” – Another emotional scene for me is when RJ and Diamond decide to work with Ethan and the crew to get Cheese home. I love this scene because there’s resolution between these young kids who aren’t really all that different. It’s one of the themes of the story, friendship. We are all more alike than we know, and this scene is a perfect example of that realization.

These are some of my favorite scenes. Send me yours!
