“Mind-blowing art. A chilling concept. The perfect technothriller...” - Cavan Scott (New York Times bestselling author: Star Wars: The High Republic)

Mindset …is an uncompromising and engaging vision. A terrifying look in the dark mirror we all need. 10/10.” -- Comics Bookcase

“Fans of The Social Network and tales of corporate espionage will snap this up.” -- Publishers Weekly

“For my money, Mindset is one of the best books being published. 10/10” – Big Comic Page

“… a stunning combination of The Graduate and Leigh Whannell’s Upgrade, blending the ethical implications of revolutionary technology with a murder mystery rooted in that same tech. – Comic Watch

“Mindset … is a form of brainwashing itself, drawing one in and leaving one with a desire for more. 10/10” – Comic Watch

Mindset isn't your standard psychological thriller. In fact, it turns the entire genre on its head, introducing a wildly fresh take on mind control and the dangers of social media and influencer marketing. ” – ComicBook.com

“Mindset … is a terrific science fiction tale, creepier because it hits so close to home.” – Major Spoilers

“Mindset would’ve been on the list of best series of the year on the strength of its art and premise alone. The theme of cell phone and internet influence over our free will is incredibly important to our modern-day life. But, coupled with the thrilling story of big tech mystery and the multilayered exploration of existential themes, I would argue that Mindset is the very best comic series of the year.” – AIPT

“Mindset is … an imaginative, unrestrained triumph.” – CBR

“One of the most compelling and relevant books on the stands.” – Comics Beat

ZACK KAPLAN

What gave birth to the idea for MINDSET?

I took the red pill. I realized what we’ve all been realizing over the past few years. We are addicted to our phones and devices, by the design of the tech industry, to keep us clicking and swiping as much as possible. I like to think about sci-fi topics and explore how they fit in our modern world. Things like time travel, alien arrival and mind control. But when I thought about mind control, I realized it already existed. It’s in our phones and we know it. Thus, Mindset was born.

I knew I wanted an artistic style that broke the limits of comics, that played and elevated the medium. It had to have texture, variation and an artist that took risks. When I saw John Pearson’s work, I knew he was the right voice for the project. We set out to create a narrative experience that plays with the differences between what you see and what you’re being told, a thriller where you truly question who is controlling who because it’s built into the aesthetic. So, pay attention, because Mindset is one of those twists and turns stories that will blow your mind.

What movies/television/books/video games inspired MINDSET?

We drew a lot from heady and noir Fincher films and other thought-provoking thrillers that keep you on your toes. Obviously, we’re exploring the world of Silicon Valley tech startups, so everything from the HBO comedy Silicon Valley and AMC’s Halt and Catch Fire to Fincher’s Social Network. Absolutely inspired by the tone of Chuck Palahniuk novels, as well as the incredible artistic work of Bill Sienkiewicz and David McKean, and graphic novels like Department of Truth and Nice House on the Lake, both by James Tynion IV.

What movies/television/books/video games inspired MINDSET?

We spoke about David Fincher from the outset being a tonal touch-stone for what we wanted to do with MINDSET, there’s the obvious influence of The Social Network but less obviously Fight Club, Zodiac and Seven playing their own uniquely influential roles. From a visual point of view, inspiration came from comics including Dave McKean and Neil Gaiman’s Violent Cases and  Signal to Noise; Frank Miller and Bill Sienkiewicz’s Elektra: Assassin; the lifestyle illustration work of Bob Peak; the illustration and comics work of Barron Storey; Italian Gialo cinema, especially Dario Argento’s Suspiria and Profondo Rosso, and Mario Bava’s Kill, Baby, Kill; the movies of Seijun Suzuki, especially Tokyo Drifter and Branded to Kill; David Lynch and Mark Frost’s Twin Peaks; and finally William Gibson’s cyberpunk masterpiece  Neuromancer.

Can you talk about any classic / modern science fiction influences?

Science-fiction and social commentary go hand in hand, and MINDSET fits firmly within that through exploration of how technology is shaping the world around us and how our fundamental interactions are being shifted. Something like BLACK MIRROR is a good touchstone for the exploration of technological and social commentary, and something that was in the back of my mind if not a direct influence. As mentioned above, Neuromancer was a big influence for me, especially the language used in the world-building, describing the technology in a very tangible, gritty way that I could almost feel. That’s something I wanted to do with the artwork, make you feel it, and make you draw connections between what you were seeing and feeling in hopefully new and unexpected ways.
