The Secret Brokers Blog Tour: Excerpt + Giveaway

The Secret Brokers (Secret Brokers #1)
Author: Alexandrea Weis
Genre: Adult Romantic Suspense/Thriller
Publication Date: April 7, 2020

Publisher: Vesuvian Books

Description:

Dallas August runs a dangerous business—an organization of elite spies for hire.

The secrets trade.

Nothing is off limits, and no price is too high.

When asked to uncover what recluse Gwen Marsh knows about a Mafia kingpin’s death, Dallas poses as a bodyguard to get close to his target, but the stubborn Asian beauty wants nothing to do with him. As the FBI and the Mafia close in, danger drives them together, but can he protect Gwen, or will Dallas be the one risking everything to discover what she is really hiding?

Dallas August is about to find out how dangerous life can be as one of the Secret Brokers.

Once you are in, there is no turning back.

“I bet you liked talking to your patients,” Dallas said. “You seem like someone who cares.”

Gwen swept the medical supplies into an empty drawer and softly smiled. “Yeah, I liked talking to my patients. Heard a hell of a lot of great stories.”

“What about secrets? Did any of your patients ever tell you things you wished they hadn’t?”

Gwen shut the drawer. “Yeah, some told me secrets, mostly people at death’s doorstep. There were things I wished they had never told me, but my job was to listen.”

Dallas stepped closer to the vanity. “That sounds dangerous.”

Her voice softened. “Listening to the last confessions of the dying isn’t dangerous.”

“It is when you learn things that others may want to know.”

She tilted her head and deepened the lines on her brow. “What kinds of things?”

“Did anyone you took care of ever tell you things that could hurt others?” Dallas blocked her way out of the room. “Information, perhaps. About their business, or something they knew about another person. Something that others would kill for.”

“And if they had, why would I tell you? You’re here as my protector; not my priest.”

She rushed past him. He reached out to stop her, wanting to push her harder, but all the lies and manipulation suddenly lost their appeal, and he let her go. He had to get what Carl wanted, but it didn’t feel right. Dallas believed he could step into the field and pick up where he’d left off, but he didn’t have the stomach for hurting people anymore.

The slam of the bedroom door twisted the knife of regret deeper into his belly.

When had he changed? He couldn’t pinpoint a time or place, all he knew was that he wasn’t the cold-blooded specialist he’d attempted to resurrect. That Dallas August was dead.

He still had days ahead locked away with Gwen in the enormous house. The prospect terrified him, but then he remembered her skin, her gentle kiss, her eyes, and the daunting task ebbed. Perhaps what had changed wasn’t so much Dallas, but how he felt about Gwen.

Enough of this bullshit. Do the job and walk away.

His frustration needed venting before he did something stupid.

Realm Blog Tour: Excerpt + Giveaway

Realm
Author: Alexandrea Weis
Genre: YA Historical

Publication Date: May 14, 2019
Publisher: Vesuvian Books

Description:

Based on a true story.

When her homeland is conquered by the mighty Alexander the Great, Roxana—the daughter of a mere chieftain—is torn from her simple life and thrown into a world of war and intrigue.

Terrified, the sixteen-year-old girl of renowned beauty is brought before the greatest ruler the world has ever known. Her life is in his hands; her future his to decide.

Without formal education or noble blood, Roxana is chosen by the Greek conqueror to be his bride. Soon she comes to know profound happiness and unyielding desire in her warrior’s arms.

However, being the king’s consort comes at a heavy price. To survive her husband’s treacherous kingdom, she must endure continuous warfare, deadly plots, jealous rivals, victory-hungry generals, and the stigma of being a barbarian. Persian blood will keep her from claiming the grandest title of all—queen—but her reign will seal the fate of an empire.

History tells his story. This is hers.

“Yasmin, do you think these Greeks will like our dancing tonight?” Irania tugged at the snug blue belt around her waist.

Yasmin took Irania’s arm, urging her to keep up with her. “That’s why we have been practicing all week, little sister. So we can be perfect before the Greek king at the banquet.”

Roxana attempted to shove her braided hair under her gold shawl. “I’m not sure I can do this.”

Yasmin clucked with disapproval and stayed her hand.

“No, the Greeks must see your beautiful hair.” She smoothed the thick plait over her right shoulder.

“Atimexis will think I’m immodest.” Roxana bit her lower lip.

“Our father wasn’t concerned about modesty when he gave you this expensive cloth to wear.” Yasmin touched the sleeve of Roxana’s golden pleated dress. “You belong in the heavens.”

Roxana held her shaking hand against her stomach. “I feel like I’m going to throw up.”

Yasmin patted her shoulder. “You always say that when you’re nervous.”

At the entrance, Atimexis turned to the fidgeting girls, hissing last minute instructions.

Don’t look at the Greeks while dancing. You’re the daughters of a Persian governor now. Mind your manners.” She released a heavy sigh. “If the king invites you to dine, you must sit next to your brothers. Eat quietly and eat only small amounts. Please, no fighting with Histanes, Roxana. No burping, Irania. And none of you are to touch a drop of wine. You hear me?”

“It will be fine, Grandmother,” Yasmin interrupted. “Go on. Father and the boys are waiting.”

Atimexis checked the girls over one last time, and then fixed her attention firmly on Roxana. “Your father will be so proud.” She ducked into the tent.

Roxana almost stumbled forward. She’d never heard her grandmother give any hint of kindness or encouragement, but tonight when she had least expected it, the words had helped.

Yasmin blew out a loud breath. “Let’s get this over with.”

“Yeah,” Irania added, tugging at her blue costume. “I’m hungry.”

“What else is new?” Yasmin laughed and then turned to Roxana. “Are you ready?”

Roxana wanted to scream she wasn’t ready, but instead, nervously bobbed her head, unable to speak. She prayed to the gods for strength to keep from being sick all over the king.

Lutes, harps, and flutes came to life inside the tent.

Irania walked into the open tent flap first, her head held high, followed by Yasmin. Roxana brought up the rear.

Spiced meats and sweet smoke filtered through the air. Low dining tables circled the room with pillows as chairs. The girls rushed to their spot in the center of the open floor. The crowd grew quiet. The music’s tempo changed, and Roxana took her position, her gaze lowered to the mats covering the ground.

In time with the music, she twisted and twirled, concentrating on every movement, mindful of her duty to please the king. She arched her hands and arms gracefully, attempting to imitate the blowing of the breeze.

Her nerves settled as she lost herself in the strains of the pleasing tune. But then she became curious about the men in the room. Her grandmother’s warning repeating in her head, she peeked up until she saw the golden table reserved for their honored guest. She reached out to do a tricky bend, lifting her head ever so slightly, and a pair of intense gray eyes almost took her breath away.

She gasped and quickly dropped her head, never losing her place in the dance. Her fingers and toes tingled as if struck by lightning.

Inside the master bathroom, Lexie closed the door and switched on the light.

What is going on?

At the vanity, she fought to find a rational explanation for the change in Will.

“He’s worried about the money, and this house is zapping his energy. Get a grip.”

She flipped on the cold water, splashed her face, and reached for her toothbrush when a chill entered the room.

“Not again.” She squeezed the toothbrush.

Her reflection clouded over as smoke obscured her bathroom mirror. She gasped as the smoke turned into the face of a man.

Lexie wanted to scream for Will, but the face changed. This wasn’t Magnus Blackwell, but someone else. With black wavy hair, warm brown eyes, and a pleasing curve to his chin, he looked at Lexie and smiled.

“Hello, Frances.”

Lexie dropped her toothbrush and ran from the bathroom.

“What’s wrong?” Will asked as she entered the bedroom.

He’d changed into his blue pajama bottoms and thrown his jeans and briefs on the floor. Will seemed so normal, so calm, she didn’t have the heart to upset him.

“I saw a big spider.”

“Yeah, getting the exterminator out here to spray is on my to-do list.” Will pulled back the covers on the bed. “I’ll call him this week. Be careful rummaging around the attic. I don’t want you to get bit by anything.”

She jogged around to her side of the bed. “I’ll keep an eye out.”

Once settled under the covers, Lexie cuddled against him.

Will wrapped an arm around her. “You’re shivering.”

She nuzzled her head into his chest. “It was a really big spider.”

“You want me to go in there and kill it for you?”

She sighed, calming down. “No, Will. This one may already be dead.”

Death by the River Blog Tour: Excerpt + Giveaway

Death by the River
Author: Alexandrea Weis & Lucas Astor

Genre: YA Horror
Publication Date: October 2, 2018

Publisher: Vesuvian Books

Description:

A high school “American Psycho.”

SOME TRUTHS ARE BETTER KEPT SECRET.

SOME SECRETS ARE BETTER OFF DEAD.

Along the banks of the Bogue Falaya River, sits the abandoned St. Francis Seminary. Beneath a canopy of oaks, blocked from prying eyes, the teens of St. Benedict High gather here on Fridays. The rest of the week belongs to school and family—but weekends belong to the river.

And the river belongs to Beau Devereaux.

The only child of a powerful family, Beau can do no wrong. Handsome. Charming. Intelligent. The star quarterback of the football team. The “prince” of St. Benedict is the ultimate catch.

He is also a psychopath.

A dirty family secret buried for years, Beau’s evil grows unchecked. In the shadows of the ruined St. Francis Abbey, he commits unspeakable acts on his victims and ensures their silence with threats and intimidation. Senior year, Beau sets his sights on his girlfriend’s headstrong twin sister, Leslie, who hates him. Everything he wants but cannot have, she will be his ultimate prize.

As the victim toll mounts, it becomes crystal clear that someone has to stop Beau Devereaux.

And that someone will pay with their life.

Beau strolled down the elegant curved mahogany staircase of his parents’ plantation home. He stepped onto the hardwood floors and caressed the newel post at the end of the steps. Shaped like the head of a horse, the bit pulled taut in its mouth, he admired the pain carved into the creature’s bulging eyes.

He headed along the hallway, tugging his book bag over his shoulder, the occasional moan of the floor echoing around him. He glanced at a massive gold painting of New Orleans he liked, bought by some dead relative a century ago. Family portraits of other deceased members of the Devereaux clan littered the white wainscoting covered walls. He passed the tall cypress door to his father’s office, not bothering to check inside. His old man was an early riser and probably on his way to the brewery.

At the end of the hall, he turned down a slender corridor to the kitchen and the entrance to the five-car garage. He enjoyed the quiet in the morning after his father went to work and before his mother crawled out of bed. It made him feel like it was all his, for a little while anyway.

In the kitchen, Beau went around the beaten copper-covered breakfast bar to the refrigerator.

His father appeared, holding a coffee mug.

Beau froze, almost afraid to move when he spotted him.

Gage Devereaux rested his hip against the black granite countertop. Tilting his head slightly, he inspected his son. In his usual attire—a long-sleeved shirt and slacks—he came across more like a casual businessman than a ruthless capitalist. Except for their height and physical prowess, Beau felt he had nothing in common with his father.

He attempted to relax by shifting his book bag on his shoulder. “Didn’t expect to find you still home.”

Gage set his mug on the counter. “I wanted to speak to you before you left for school.”

The hint of condescension in his father’s voice tightened his chest—it usually signaled a lecture.

“I got a call from Ms. Greenbriar yesterday afternoon. She said you visited her office after a run-in you had with Carol Foster’s boy.”

Beau’s fingers twitched, the way they did when his aggravation got the better of him. Great. The idiot woman had called his father. The last thing he needed was Gage Devereaux up his ass.

“Derek is dating Dawn’s sister, so I often see him at school.” He tempered the irritation in his voice, not wanting to annoy his father. “I was talking to Leslie when Derek walked up. I accidentally caught him with my elbow when I turned around. I apologized and everything is fine.”

He waited, analyzing every move his father made, searching his hard eyes for an inkling of his mindset.

“I’ve spoken to you before about this.” Gage came around the breakfast bar. “This family is in a precarious position with everyone in town. I don’t want your actions threatening our business or our good name.” He gripped Beau’s shoulder. “What have I always told you? What is our rule?”

Beau cringed as the words he’d spent a lifetime dreading screamed through his head. He faced his father, standing at attention. “Self-control in all things. Never let anyone see who you really are.”

Gage leaned closer. “No matter what anyone says, no matter what they do, you walk away. This includes your girlfriend. Do you understand?”

Beau stiffened at the low, menacing tone in his father’s voice. “Yes, sir.”

Gage lifted the left side of his mouth ever so slightly. “Go to school.”

Beau stood by the breakfast bar, not moving a muscle as his father headed to the garage. The door clicked shut and a trickle of sweat ran down his temple. His jaw muscles cramped from clenching, his heart rate slowed, and he glanced at his fists. His father’s warning spinning in his head, Beau slammed his hand down on the copper bar.

Anger like molten lead ran through him. Beau sucked in deep breaths to calm himself—something he remembered from a long-ago therapy session. Then he relaxed his hand on the bar, checking the indent he’d left in the copper. He wiped the smudge away, stepped back, and raised his head.

I am the master of control.
