When the spooked horse had bolted down the trail that morning at summer camp, years ago, she’d gone from a brave, boasting volunteer to a frightened mess, and broken her arm.

A ghost of the remembered pain sent tingles through her right elbow.

People will feel sorry for you now because you got hurt, but al they’ll remember in the future is how you fell off. That’s why you have to learn everything there is to know first about whatever you plan to do before joining in. And make sure you’re the best at it or don’t do it at all.

That had been her father’s take on the situation when she’d gotten home. That advice, as harsh as it had been, had kept her out of trouble. She’d never shown up unprepared for anything, big or small , but this time, “just fake it” would have to become her new motto. At least she wasn’t expected to actual y get on a horse for her audition.

From what Lena had said, the role in the film may not even require getting on one at al . She just needed to learn about stable life and become comfortable with it...or at least act like she was.

The woman walking down the path joined them. An inner radiance lit up the delicate features of her dark brown face. “Hi. I’m Zurie Tillbridge. You must be Chloe Daniels.”

“Yes.” Chloe returned Zurie’s firm handshake and smile. “Thank you for letting me stay here.”

“Lena said it was important. I’m happy to help. I see you met my cousin Tristan.”

Tristan. So that was his name. She’d met him if snapping at her was considered an introduction. “Yes, we’ve met.”

A hint of irritation came into his neutral expression. “You scheduled another meeting here this morning?”

“I did.” The smile on Zurie’s face dimmed from friendly to professional.

Chloe’s family drama radar locked in. Ooh...interesting. Zurie was clearly in charge, and he respected her, but something other than who was the bigger boss divided them. Jealousy? An inheritance dispute? Had one of them been a secret baby? Whatever the issue was, observing their relationship could lead to a gold mine of information for developing the character she wanted to play.

Tristan gave a curt nod and broke the silence. “I’ll leave you to it.

Find me when you’re ready for us to meet.”

He turned to walk away, but Zurie put a hand on his forearm. “Not so fast. We’ll meet about the expansion when I get back. Her visit is what I wanted to talk about. Chloe’s an actress, and she’s here to research a part for a film. I’d planned on showing her around but my schedule has changed. I’m going to Florida instead of Nevada. A colleague who’s a visiting faculty member for an equine studies program has to take time off because of a family emergency. I agreed to fil in for her. I’ll be gone for six to eight weeks instead of a couple of days.”

“But I’m supposed to shadow you for the next six weeks,” Chloe objected.

“Tristan will have to take over for me.”

He shook his head. “My schedule is full . I don’t have time to babysit anyone.”

Seriously? He thought she needed a babysitter? Not now or ever.

Chloe faced him and flashed an overly sweet smile. “Oh, don’t worry about me. I’m fine on my own.”

“You’re afraid of horses and that’s a problem, especial y if you’re hanging around my stable.”

“The problem was that I just didn’t expect to see one.” She followed his gaze to her soiled boot and heat bloomed in her cheeks.

“What I meant to say is the horses caught me off guard.”

His brow raised. “So that’s what you’re sticking with? You were caught off guard to see horses at a horse stable?”

“Hold on.” Zurie put up her hand. “I don’t know what happened between the two of you before I got here, but I have a plane to catch.” She looked to Chloe. “If you want to observe operations at Tillbridge, you’re going to have to shadow the person stepping into my shoes.” She looked to Tristan. “Whoever is in charge of Tillbridge during the time I’m away will be the one to show Ms. Daniels the ropes. If you don’t think you can handle both of those duties, I’ll assign someone who can.”

Chapter Three

Tristan drove the golf cart down the narrow-paved trail winding through the green landscape, and the wheels dipped in and out of every separation in the pavement.

Chloe sat on the passenger side, digging her fingers into the cushion underneath her as she bounced in the seat.

They rounded a curve and zipped by a fenced-in pasture with horses on one side, and on the other, a worker riding a large mower in the empty field.

The scents of rich earth and freshly cut grass intertwined with the smell of horse manure. Yeah, it was everywhere. Chloe couldn’t stop a grimace as she glanced at her dirty boot. She’d have to get used to dealing with it along with Tristan.

He hadn’t spoken or looked at her since having a side conversation with Zurie at the stable. She couldn’t hear what they’d discussed, but from their hard expressions and the stiffness of their body language when they’d gone their separate ways, it hadn’t gone well . She’d told him she could walk back to the guesthouse, but he’d insisted on giving her a ride. Probably to keep her from wandering around his stable.

At the end of the path, he steered into the parking lot on the side of the green-roofed two-story white building with green trim and a pitched roof. Sunglasses hid his eyes. “Car?”

“There.” Chloe pointed to the red two-door midway down the first row.

Based on his current mood, she actual y preferred his choice of not talking to her at al or communicating in monosyllabic caveman-speak.

He pulled up behind the rental and hit the brake.

As she lurched forward, she banged the toe of her boot. Chloe started counting to ten and made it to four. “Why are you so mad about me being here?”

“Do you honestly want to know?”

“Yes.”

Cori Ross is thanking her lucky stars. Sure, her long-time boyfriend just dumped her, but that’s a good thing. In her rush to find Mr. Right, she realizes she almost settled for Mr. Just Okay. And that’s definitely not okay. So, tonight, she’s out with her friends at the Breakup Bash—a private party for women celebrating their break-ups—and she’s actually celebrating. Still, it was too close a call. So she makes a deal with herself—no guys for six months.

Unfortunately, just as she’s leaving the club, she runs into her old boyfriend, Grey Latham—the guy she’d always wanted to be Mr. Right. Great. What a time to swear off guys. Maybe she needs to change the deal—no relationships for six months. There’s no reason why she can’t have a fling, right? Because Grey still holds the title of the best sex she’s ever had.

There’s no way this could go wrong. Grey is on his way to international DJ fame—he’s only in town for a short time, and then he’ll be gone again. No harm in burning up the sheets while it lasts.

Too bad neither expected what happened next...

Each book in the Breakup Bash series is STANDALONE:

* The First Rule of Hook-Ups

* Rules of a Rebound

* The Last Rule of Makeups

Grey walked in wearing a rose-colored towel around his waist. A sheen of dampness trailed down between his pecs to his abs. The scent of her lemon body wash wafted from his skin. On him, the feminine fragrance transformed into something wholly masculine and potently sexual.

He came up beside her, wrapped an arm around her waist, and kissed her temple. “I still don’t understand why you wouldn’t take a shower with me.”

“Because you’re too distracting.” She grazed her fingertip over his slightly damp chest.

“And the problem with that is?” He rested his hands on her hip.

“We both have places to go and people to see. And I need to eat something before I pass out.”

He glanced at the eggs and bowl on the counter. “Yeah, I could eat a whole plate of scrambled eggs right now. Do you want me to cook?”

He was offering to cook? When they were together, he was the Microwave King, and breakfast Hot Pockets and Toaster Strudel had ruled his kingdom. Starvation must have messed with her hearing.

“You mean like actually crack the eggs open and cook them, in a pan, on the stove?”

“Yes, I can scramble eggs and actually cook a few other things.” He lifted her chin to shut her mouth, sealing her lips with his. “Stop looking at me like I just grew another head.”

“You kinda did. The Grey I knew owned exactly one flimsy pot that he never used.”

“No, I owned two, but yeah, that was me. But now I’ve got skills. I can even handle toast and coffee to go with it.”

“Oh my gosh.” She exaggerated her surprise. “You’re practically a certified chef. I must partake of this goodness.”

“Uh-huh. I can’t believe you doubt my skills.” He tightened the towel.

Her gaze dropped to where he tucked the ends around his waist.

One light tug… The prospect of what would happen if that barrier was taken away was exciting as well as slightly unnerving. She’d never been this needy for a man. She’d only been in a sexual drought for a few months, not years. What was wrong with her?

She turned her attention to the counter and took another egg from the carton. “Do you want coffee?”

“I’d love some.” He went over to the Keurig plugged in on the counter behind her. She was about to ask if he knew how to use it when he turned it on, snagged a white mug from the drying rack, and stuck it on the drip tray. He looked through the K-cup pods in the small wire basket next to the coffee machine. “What kind do you want?”

“The Green Mountain Breakfast Blend. I think I used the last one yesterday. Can you grab a new box from the pantry?” She pointed to the half-closed door near the corner of the kitchen.

“Sure. Which shelf?” He flipped on the light switch on the wall and went into the walk-in space.

“On the back wall. Third one down.” Without him as a distraction, she expertly cracked the egg on the side of the bowl with one hand and dropped the contents into the bowl. “Found it?”

“No,” he called out. “I don’t see it.”

“It’s there.”

“Are you sure it’s on the third shelf?”

“Positive.”

“Maybe you should take a look.”

She rinsed and dried her hands. “You’re not looking hard enough.”

But he’d certainly been hard enough earlier. The play on words made her smile as she walked to the doorway of the pantry closet.

Grey faced away from her, searching through the built-in shelf on the back wall. “What does the package look like?”

It’s six foot one with a towel molded to its grabbable butt. Her gaze strayed to his ass and lingered. It was solid with muscle, just like the rest of him. He’d definitely been working out a lot more since she’d last seen him.

“Cori…” Grey looked over his shoulder at her. “If you keep staring at me like that, there will be consequences.”

Consequences… “Like what?”

He turned and faced her. The tenting of his towel became more prominent before her eyes.

A small smile tipped up his mouth, but his gaze, as it roamed over her, was intense with need. “Like finding out just how sturdy these shelves are.”
